Unusual names

I'm thinking of some unusual names for baby and can't decide whether it would be a blessing (being individual) or a curse (forever having to repeat it/spell it)? Any advice/experience y ou gals can give me?

My name is Welsh so isn't all that common outside Wales, but there were 3 of us in my class at Secondary school and we were referred to as name B, nameT and nameL (or Brown, Thomas and Lloyd) which wasn't all that nice.

Check out the Utah Baby Namer for more baby naming fun.

my ds is Ethan which at the time 3yrs ago was quite unusual but quite popular now im quite disappointed at that and my dd is Eden Ruby which i love but most people call her Dolly!!!!!!

peachypie · 09/09/2004 22:06

sorry i dont mean im disappointed with the name i love his name, i mean i am disappointed it so popular now.

sweetkitty · 09/09/2004 22:27

my cousin called her DD after the then Chelsea player Zenden! (now at Middlesborough) have also heard of a Zander (Vin Diesel character in Triple X)

DD is offically Abigail Sadie (after my gran) but is called Abbie my mum hates Abigail (she didn't even like Abbie but has to call her that) so she tells everyone the baby is Abbie Sadie!!

sweetkitty · 09/09/2004 22:28

sorry it's Xander not Zander

eidsvold · 10/09/2004 00:45

I know of a Xander.... our joke is that dh will name the next one after a chelsea player if it is a boy - I have suggested Carlo or Giancarlo or Gianfranco.... have seen an Esme Zola. Also know a couple of Theos and a father and son both called Elvis.......

This time as everyone is expecting an unusual name after dd we are going for more simple names that we really like.

Have a niece Sienna and have seen it everywhere since she was born but had not really come across it before.

mazzymcg · 10/09/2004 10:14

Talking of Elvis, I used to work with a lovely woman called Elvis - she must be about 50 now!

Bibiboo · 16/09/2004 09:30

Well, after all thisd time and all these posts, we're 4 weeks away from the Boo being born and STILL no closer to a name. Oh dear.

Modern names are struck off the list by dh who's a teacher and sees children called those names every day and older fashioned names are ruined by the looks we get from MIL and gran. Can't win really. We're just going to name the Boo and not tell anyone anymore - it's all too hard!

Our DD is Amelia and her middle name is Clementine. I wanted that for a 1st name, but DH wasn't so keen. I think he agreed it on it for a middle name, because he'd just watched me go through labour and couldn't refuse!! Don't know any other Clementines though.

laa · 17/09/2004 19:13

Oh, I forgot. My middle name is Fionnguala. I like it now but when I was growing up...a nightmare. No one could spell it (inc. me) or pronounce it - and I got v. bored trying to explain it.

Bibiboo- Good luck in choosing a name, I ended up with an old one for my DS ( 3months ago.) Scott,(but this was also the name I had opicked for DD). (who is 8 )she has a modern name Nicole.

Just go with what you think and suprise everyone, (I wish I had)

I like Ieaun, and Kyan, for a boy.

anyway good luck again.

karen01 · 19/09/2004 19:05

We were going to call our dog (when we get one ) Storm.

Sozie · 19/09/2004 19:27

In dd's nrsery class there is a Savannah and a Tamia. A work colleague called her twin girls Summer and Bailie. I also know a Storm who is about 29 yo now.

Havent read all the thread, and couldnt remember if Id posted, but I love unusual names. My 4 dds have unusual names but not sure if I would call a boy something out of the ordinary. It is a pain having to spell their names out all the time though.

nutcracker · 19/09/2004 19:34

On Little Angels this week one of the little girls was called Elody (sp ??), which i thought was nice and girlie and unusual too.

MUMINAMILLION · 19/09/2004 19:35

Thats lovely. Wish I could have another one and have all the fun of choosing names again.

logic · 19/09/2004 19:38

Being welsh too, I liked Angharad for a girl but my FIL said "You're going to call it Hand Grenade?
Cheers, Dad. Luckily we had a boy - whom we gave an English name. This time I would like to use a Welsh name and my favourite boy's name atm is Rhydian...we will probably have Bethan for a girl.

I am not too worried about people misspelling it because I now have a very short, standard English surname and no-one ever gets that right either. I always start by spelling it out to save time! You just can't win. People are rubbish with names.

nutcracker · 19/09/2004 19:39

Oooh just noticed you have 4 Dd's MUMINAMILLION, thats lovely

MUMINAMILLION · 19/09/2004 19:44

Yes, its great for handing down clothes!!! But possibly not when they are all teenagers and there will be hormones abounding!

Brighteyes · 19/09/2004 20:21

Was watching the film xXx today with dp.

Vin Diesels character is call Xander (pronounced Zander). Both my dp and I both said soon as we heard it we really liked the name.

Doing a search on the internet its certainly unusual its never appeared in the top 250 and some sites don't even recognise the name.

Also loved the meaning of the name - Protector of men. Definitely on my list of baby names.

Tinker · 19/09/2004 20:55

nutty - in France this summer I noticed Elodie everywhere. Think it's lovely but wonder if it's a French Kylie

JanH · 19/09/2004 20:57

A local girl has named her daughter either Olina or Olana (can't remember which) which sounds quite nice and musical but they are calling her Ollie!

MUMINAMILLION · 19/09/2004 21:00

What a waste Janh! I think it's such a shame when beautiful names are shortened. My sis is called Alexandra yet she's always been called Sandra. I do like the name Sandra, but its not a patch on her real name.

nutcracker · 19/09/2004 21:00

Are thats how it's spelt, thanks Tinker, it's lovely.
