I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk

If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Welcome to Callie. You are very brave, to go for number three. A lot of people panic as those symptoms set in. I don't think from what I've seen on this thread it automatically means you will suffer more in the third preg, but it is harder to rest, and rest is of course one of the most important way to control this scourge.MotherofPearl will be along soon and she has had three pregnancies; I think pre-emptive meds is the key, so do go to get them. Also to work out a contingency plan (as I think you did; sorry, half awake this morning) with nursery places, etc, even an occasional cleaner if you can run to the luxury. I had early symptoms of nausea from the day my period was due, and heartburn, and I really didn't suffer badly at all compared to most people on here. I do know a few people who have been on these threads who suffered less in a second or third pregnancy, sorry, I really don't recall the names at this point of any but MaryLou242 a few years ago. There's lots of support on this thread. There's one comfort, anyway; you at least weren't told by the dr's that you were so ill that you were putting your life at risk to go for it again - as they did say to Kalidasa who had two awful HG pregnancies on here a few years ago, so you are obviously very tough! There's lots of lovely women on here who will get you through.
RobberBride Oh dear, poor you about being shoved aside on the due dates list! A lot of people report well behaved babies who sleep, and strange things like that. I didn't have such a baby, but she was like that in the uterus, slept through every night, and I think it was the difficult birth that made her like that. Plus,I really didn't suffer for long compared to most. On that Blondes and otbers, (sorry, so much of this post is about my anecdotal experience) I was refused meds (this was a long time ago) and had to rely on Acupuncture. But my DD had terrible three month colic anyway, so possibly some of these babies would have had it anyway?
fourcorneredcircle Congratulations on getting into work. That is three steps forward on the awful Hyperemesis board game. How is the spotting? It must be unnerving.

Sorry, I meant to add, Lucy you are indeed a trooper; you have suffered horribly but been really encouraging to others. It's odd, they do keep some women on meds to the end, even if they don't like doing it - and yours was such a severe case, and complicated by other health problems?
Good luck for those starting on meds.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

Hi all

I've been to the doctors this morning.
They aren't keen on giving me any anti sickness meds but I haven't been physically sick for a week now, though I wish they had given me something earlier. I'm now 18 weeks.

She has signed me off work again but I want to go back and so she has recommended a phased return which I have already spoken to work about and they are luckily very accommodating.

So am looking at a phased return a week on Monday and pleased with that.

Even better is I have a prescription for omeprazole for the heartburn which to be honest is making the sickness worse now ( only been having it 2 weeks and it's bloody awful). Anyone else have this prescription?

Hopefully that will help and I will feel a bit better.

If I start being physically sick again though I'll be straight back to the doctors.

Hope everyone is okay today

LightTripper · 08/12/2016 11:11

Lucy so glad you are hanging in there but it sounds awful. I think you are AMAZING for getting through this. You deserve a super-simple birth and a happy, good-feeding, good-sleeping baby!

Robber our DD was pretty easy by most measures I think. Didn't have reflux or colic or any of the other things that many babies get and make them miserable. She wasn't the best feeder, so my boobs suffered a bit - but after sickness a bit of intermittent boob pain is manageable (plus just SMEAR LANSINOH over everything as often as possible from day zero ... lesson learned!!) And she as a good sleeper. So I liked to think that was my reward for having a hard pregnancy, but we were probably just lucky!

Blondes I am in awe of your bladder/pelvic floor. You hang on to that rosette and wear it with pride!

Hello Callie - I hope you're right and you have a BFP soon! Possibly it could just be a winter tummy bug (clutches at straws)??? Did you find any pills that helped you in your previous pregnancies? If you are already feeling queasy I would get down to the GP and try to get prescribed something as soon as you get your BFP. There seems to be quite a bit of evidence that starting early with drugs helps if you are going to need them.

All fine here. Poor DD still has an awful cough, but OH took her to the GP yesterday who said her lungs etc. all sound/look fine, so we just need to hang in there. Her appetite is off a bit but she's still in good form and she wasn't sick at all yesterday, so all good and hopefully she'll be fully better in time for Christmas.

MotherofPearl · 08/12/2016 12:39

Gosh, it's been busy on here, I've fallen rather behind.

Callie, welcome. You've already had great advice from others, so I'd echo what's been said about early medication (at your early stage, cyclizine and B6, typically). I'm sorry to be negative but I'm afraid that one of the signs that distinguishes HG from 'normal' morning sickness is it's early onset. But swift intervention and as much rest as possible can help stave off the worst. Good luck and keep us posted.

Moon, great news about the omeprezole - lots of women on the thread swear by it. Reducing acidity is a key part of managing HG, ime.

LH, glad to have you back, although sorry you've been having such a wretched time of it. Hopefully you'll soon have the reflux under control. I echo what Blondes says about living in the country! Grin I'm afraid I'm a city person myself!

Argh, am going to have to finish posting later on, DD2 has woken up. Wanted to reply to others. I'll be back!

moonoverthewater · 08/12/2016 14:34

Thanks mother of pearl. I've started them this morning so fingers crossed!

fourcorneredcircle · 08/12/2016 15:39

Three steps forward, two steps back I'm afraid Lucinda ... became intimately acquainted with the work loos again today Confused ... not due in again until Wednesday now. Planning to sleep right through!

Not me spotting - someone else? Hope you're ok mystery woman Smile

I hope that your DD will be better soon Light

Lots of people have Omeprazole moon it can really help.

My bed is calling me...

MotherofPearl · 08/12/2016 15:55

Back!
Blondes, I took cyclizine all the way through my 2nd pg, right up to 40+9, no HCPs said not to and DS was/is fine.
Light, sorry to hear your DD is still not 100%. That is very tiring for any parent.
Captain, glad to hear the Ondansetron is having an impact. The effects should really last about 4 hours, as far as I know. Do watch out for the Dreaded Ondansetron Constipation.
For those wondering if HG babies are easy when they arrive, I would say that when the baby is born, the relief at no longer being sick and feeling nauseous is so HUGE that it goes a long way in off-setting the usual newborn niggles. My DD2 was born in May, and I still feel elated to be well again! Sleepless nights and 3 month colic really feel like a walk in the park compared with HG, imo.
Four, oh dear, sorry to hear you've been sick at work. Glad you're planning on plenty of rest.
Lucy, cheering you on as you approach the finish line, which is now well and truly in sight!

LucyHMK · 08/12/2016 17:46

Thanks, ladies! Last night was horrendous, baked a gingerbread cake today, which I don't think I can stomach, but it didn't make me sick doing it!

Callie - welcome. I had a pregnancy early this year that ended horribly (ruptured ectopic & I collapsed) & although I didn't realise at the time, after I realised that I had HG from about week 4. This time I took a pregnancy test at 3 weeks (post conception) after being sick for over a week. It said 2-3 weeks pregnant on the test, so I think I must have had HG from about 1 week pregnant. Not great for you, but nothing to worry about.

Blondes - I think it depends on your consultants. I have really bad drug reactions & feel much more comfortable with trying to be off meds before an anaesthetic as I've gone into anaphylactic shock from GA before. Seems sensible to at least try as I know I have to have an epidural.

Thanks for all the cheering on, ladies! Just think, this time next week, you all get to move up a space on this pink castle board game! 🎉🎉🎉

LucindaE · 08/12/2016 20:23

fourcorneredcircle Sorry to hear of puking at work. Sorry for mixing you up with someone else about spotting. Oh dear, who was it?
Lucy Very nice of you to cook a (swear word on this thread) ginger Wink
cake for others! Star
A Star for Blondes besides that rosette for such bladder control. Mine is a wreck these days...
LightTripper and MotherofPearl Lovely advice as ever...
moon So glad you got something for the heartburn, anyway. That can make a huge difference, but your dr's attitude towards meds seems fairly antiquated...
We haven't heard from babyand and a few others for a while.
I hope everyone is Okay-ish...

Hi all!

It's so great to find a thread where people are going through the same thing I am, although it's so sad to know so many others are suffering. I'm pregnant with my first, and had hg from week 4.

I'm 13.5 weeks now and have been in hospital 3 times with 4+ ketones and gone on drips. I've tried alll the drugs! Currently on a mix of 3 different kinds, but still being sick upto 8 times a day.

I just need rant really, I'm feeling quite fed up/ weepy most days, and desperate just to have one days break from feeling like shit constantly. When did people start to feel as though they were getting better?

LucyHMK · 09/12/2016 18:57

Rant away, Pastie ! We understand 🙂 I've been sick on & off all day & a bad stomach too & I'm due on Thursday, so seriously, rant away!

How are the drugs settling, Moon ?

And to be clear it was a cinnamon & g-word cake... obviously I'm practically saintly at this point. Or delirious.

LucindaE · 09/12/2016 19:04

Hello and welcome, PastieMaid. Sorry you have had so many admissions already. Most people with this do start to notice an improvement some time between 14 and 20 weeks on average. Even the unlucky minority who suffer throughout don't feel as bad as they did in the first tri. After so many admissions, I am sure you have kesostix to check your urine for the early signs of deydration? What drinks or - dare I mention it - food can you stand?
A lot of women on here find flat coke (usually full sugar) helpful, particularly if left to go flat, and Elderflower water, and the juice and fruit of tinned fruit, especially peaches and pears, and awful cheap ice cream, ice lollies and some can stand chocolate milk shakes and Lucoazade, but some find that a bit acidic. Crisps, too, and chips. Oh yes, and cuppa soup. You'll find lots of great advice and support on here. I am Mother Hen, I suffered years ago.

Lucy Cross posted. Poor you, I think you are saintly to cook that.

OP posts:
MotherofPearl · 09/12/2016 19:17

Welcome Pastie. You've already had great advice from Lucinda, so I'd just add that even though I was sick pretty much all the way through my HG pregnancies, I felt noticeably improved by around 16 weeks, and better yet from around 20 weeks. So I'd say you should start to notice an improvement in the next couple of weeks. Better for me meant only throwing up 1-2 a day, and the nausea being more in the background and less all-consuming. The thing to hang onto - hard to do early on I realise - is that unlike other types of illness, it will end, completely, after the birth. Meanwhile do stick around on here for lots of ranting and ginger-hating!

Lucy, sorry you've had such a rough day. You must be utterly desperate for the end now. Ginger cake indeed! Brave move for anyone on this thread, that's for sure!

Hope all is bearable for others this evening? After a flurry of activity things seem quiet again.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/12/2016 19:19

Thank you Lucy and Lucinda for the info and support Grin

My foods of choice are plain hula hoops and cheestrings! I also find ice lollies and soft chewy mints are good to stop nausea feeling so bad.

I'll get some kesosticks soon, so I don't have to drag my sorry ass to the drs anymore. So sorry your having a bad day Lucy, so close to end end tho, hooray!

MotherofPearl · 09/12/2016 19:27

Cross-posted Blondes. Sorry you're still having this blip. Great image of the fabled Pink Castle!

Pastiemaid · 09/12/2016 20:08

Thanks Pearls and Blondes Smile

How do people out names in bold? Still getting g used to mumsnet!

fourcorneredcircle · 09/12/2016 22:31

To put something in bold you put * before and after the word with no spaces. If you click the I button circle below the comment box it explains all the options.

Sicky day here, full on stomach empty once but mostly small mouthfuls of vomit every so often. Feeing very nauseous too. Thing I over did it this week for sure. Hope I feel better tomorrow... we're going to look at prams! It's too early to start buying really but we thought if we found something we liked we could look out for it in the post Christmas sales also, chartered engineer DH is driving me bonkers by seemingly being incapable of understanding the difference between a pram, push chair and car seat

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/12/2016 23:00

I can do bold just easier on phone not to sorry lazy

I thought it was a lovely pink castle 😍😍

MotherofPearl · 10/12/2016 09:03

Enjoy the pram browsing Four. If nothing else, tasks like that are a helpful reminder of the prize at the end of your HG horrors. Sorry to hear that sickness has been bad again. It's so hard to balance some return to normal activity with not overdoing it and setting yourself back.

LucyHMK · 10/12/2016 09:57

Ah, the pink castle - 5 sleeps!!

I've been up for about 3 days straight now. My carpal tunnel is so bad at night. Grrr. Man, I am so ready for this to be over!

For the newbies, as mental as this sounds, have you tried chocolate milk? Or tinned peaches in juice?

My worst trimester was definitely the second. The first was unpleasant, but the second was just horrible 😕 That's also when my hair started falling out. Gah. I'm not wondering if the boy will come out with loads of hair!! 👶🏻

Four - we bought our pram at a M&P Parents to Be event. You get 15% off if you spend over £1000, or something like that. We
