Polyhydramnios- anyone else?!

34 weeks with DC3, saw my midwife today for first time in 6 weeks, measuring 38 weeks and midwife thinks its excess fluid. Going into hospital tomorrow or a scan and monitoring.

Anyone have/had this?! Had a GTT done and all fine, 20 week scan showed no apparent problem with the baby, so unsure why it could be?

Am I likely to need inducing early?

Any anecdotes/advice would be great, thank you!

I had it from about 32 weeks and it was absolutely agonising (they called it acute polyhydramnios, I couldn't find anything cute about it.) It was impossible to get comfortable, ended up sleeping on a chair for the last month. As you haven't mentioned any pain, hopefully yours won't cause you anything like the problems I had

The hospital decided it was due to the baby not swallowing liquid which, linked to a small shadow on the brain led them to tell me he was going to be brain damaged and would need a shunt in his brain.

As it turned out, he was born at 37 weeks, and his brain was fine. The reason he wasn't swallowing was he had a TOF (tracheosophageal fistula), which was repaired at birth and gave little trouble in the end.

The relief when they cut me open and what felt like about 10 cubic metres of water gushed out was bloody fantastic :-D

Now DS is a strapping, healthy, intelligent lad - hope that's reassuring!

My back is horrendous, I have SPD and I am struggling for breath a lot, the latter i had thought was down to braxton hicks buythe maybe it's the pressure from the fluid?!

Yes, I made them do 5 brain scans before I believed he wasn't brain damaged

I had this, identified around 35 weeks I think? They checked kidneys and said it was just one of those things, until suddenly they decided it wasn't and induced at 40 weeks. There was a lot of fluid when they broke my waters.
Other than that & that being induced was an absolute pig that ended with emcs everything was fine, baby was fine.
I think I lost a bit more blood than otherwise as the uterus was more stretched? I wonder if that also contributed to a fairly long recovery from cs, but it could just be I'm a wuss ;)

I had this, identified at 36 weeks. It was so bad they admitted me to hospital straight away and kept me there until I got to 38 weeks then did a c-section. DH says when they opened me so much fluid spilled out and onto floor they all took a step back!! On the plus side, dd came out looking like she'd just been bathed.

Oh God, this is what I worry about! not done any shopping for the baby yet and I have no pj's etc for me that fit!!

I had this. Obs wasn't concerned, also did GTT that came back normal.

I was induced at 39 weeks, measuring large for dates. Baby was perfect but I had a shit time of it. Very difficult forceps birth.

The amount of water was off the scale! Sloshing all around the floor, it was like a pipe had burst open.

I have mild pcos and I put it down to that.

I had this with DC3 the day before he was born my bump measured over 76cm. I had SPD, HG and was being monitored for suspected OC due to severe itching and was having contractions all night every night from 31 weeks, I begged to be induced but the consultant said to wait. Thankfully my waters went early the next morning. I soaked through all four packs of my maternity pads and all my clean PJ's. Half an hour before DS was born I was in Boots buying more pads.

Whatthefreakinwhatnow Try not to worry. C section was my nightmare scenario and I hate hospitals so much I was planning a homebirth and hoping I wouldn't end up there. In the end I was glad they admitted me as the adjustable bed made it much better for me. I had spent the previous two months trying to sleep upright on the sofa as I couldn't lay down. I had 2 weeks to get my head around having c section, and it wasn't that bad. I was so uncomfortable. (excruciating pain so I could barely walk) I had reached the point of not caring what they did to me, I just wanted her out!!!!! Do try to sort out your hospital bag though, just in case. It'll be alright.

Oh, and put a cd in your hospital bag in case you have c section. Nobody told me this so surgery music was surgeons choice. Dd came into the world to Phil Collins In the air tonight..... all very dramatic!!

You are right, in really should pack the hospital bag just in case. I'll go shopping after my appointment tomorrow and get the bits I need. God tip on the CD! Phil Collins 😂

Is the breathlessness likely to get worse? I finish work for annual leave next week, really want to make it to next Friday bit between not breathing well and back hip and pelvis pain I must admit I'm struggling

It will probably get worse the further along you vet. Try to make yourself as comfy as you can and take it easy.

Don't worry until you've had a scan. At the hospital I work we've discovered that with the new national GROW chart system that midwives are incorrectly measuring and more often than not measuring people too big. Bad for us as we've had such an increase in scan demand we've had to take on a locum, but good to discover that the community midwives needed retraining in measuring symp to fundal heights of patients!
So don't worry until the fluid is measured tomorrow 😊

Do you think tank my fault? Is it something I've done? I feel awful, I'm 34 weeks and it's only really in the last 3 or 4 week's I've come to accept this pregnancy, I've been suffering depression and now I feel like it's my fault something is wrong with my baby because I spent so long dreading it and not wanting them

No it's nothing you've done

I had this diagnosed at 22 weeks, had all sorts of tests and consistently told I had extra water. The Brixton hicks were bad, worse when I hadn't drank enough water and I remember the breathless feeling too!

My induction was fine and the amount of water was quite normal, I expected so much more. Dd was 10lbs + though, and healthy.

Can you leave work a bit early to rest, you sound like you need it?

I am using leave from next Friday, and last week my manager put me on reduced hours so I want to keep going if I can, I don't want to trigger early mat leave as my DP is taking the mat leave from me and I want him to have as long as possible off, before the baby joins it's older sister at childcare.

I am so uncomfortable at night that I just give up now around 2/3 and get up, the baby's movements are so strong they make me feel physically sick, I worry he's massive already.( had 2 big babies)

I am getting cramp in both calves and both feet nightly so I permanently feel like I've pulled the muscles in my legs; my hips and back are excruciating and my SPD is getting worse by the day. Throw in being short of breath and awful reflux and I'm feeling pretty sorry for myself

Trying to put a "happy" face on though so DP and my 9 year old don't worry about me.

Anxious for the scan now, so I know what we are facing.

Will I have to have more monitoring if it is poly?

Is this the reason why my body is covered in bruises and I'm so dizzy all the time?

I'm not sure about bruised and dizzy, have you spoken to gp about that or midwife?

I couldn't use the pool, and had a bit more monitoring but I wasn't strapped to the bed.

I wonder how possible it is for mw to put forward polyhydramnios through just feeling, with the knowledge of 2 big babies previously? I know it's quite difficult to diagnose even by scan!

Try not to worry and tell them today about all of your symptoms!

The customised growth chart thingy is supposed to account for having babies at least 4kg, but yesterday's measurement was so far off the chart it was ridiculous. I think the fact that she had to be quite hard to feel the baby etc led her to believe tske not all baby and is a lot of fluid too?

How did the scan go today OP?

Well! No excess fluid at all, just big, breech baby! 😁 I'm so relieved!

Another scan in a few weeks to see if he's moved or if I will need a section, but there fine I can live with that.
