Gift for new parents - funny or offensive?

NapQueen · 25/07/2016 17:04

Alongside something for the newborns I fancied making this. It's twins so will need a little editing.

I'm not twee nor is the recipient, but I am a little unsure as to if it's a little too far.

It sums up how I felt when I had my dcs but may not be everyone's cup of tea!

Everything about it is hideous.

A copy of The Omen would be less grim.

PotatoBread · 25/07/2016 17:06

'I'll cut you' is a step too far IMO and I'd consider myself to have a good sense of humour bordering on the dark side. I like the embroidery just not the message!

vvviola · 25/07/2016 17:07

Grin I like it.

But. I would possibly not have appreciated it at the slightly-irrational newborn stage. Had you given it to me when DD2 was a year old, still didn't sleep more than a couple of hours at a stretch, but I'd recovered a little of my sense of humour, then I'd have loved it.

I suspect it is one of those things you can only give if you are 100% sure how it will be received.

daisydalrymple · 25/07/2016 17:09

I'd have hated it, but each to their own Smile you know your friend best, so should have a fair idea of likely reaction.

GeorgeTheThird · 25/07/2016 17:09

It's the "cut" that makes it sinister. Maybe change the verb?

Floggingmolly · 25/07/2016 17:11

It's horrible. Really horrible

Goingtobeawesome · 25/07/2016 17:12

It's horrible.

NapQueen · 25/07/2016 17:16

Ok. Advice sought and appreciated.

Back to the drawing board.

What about "you wake 'em, you bought 'em"??

Pauperback · 25/07/2016 17:21

Everyone feels murderous when a baby is unnecessarily woken. It's the horrible specificity of 'I'll cut you' that I don't like, and it seems to belittle genuine violence. I don't know - 'don't wake the baby on pain of death/ don't wake the baby and make me assume my true form'?

MrsJoeyMaynard · 25/07/2016 17:23

It's a bit sinister.

I wouldn't have appreciated this. I'd have thanked the giver politely and binned it the minute they left.

blue2014 · 25/07/2016 17:44

Oh, I love it - I think it's hilarious

ClassicMonkey · 25/07/2016 17:45

I love it!

Floggingmolly · 25/07/2016 17:47

Why is it "hilarious", blue?

FellOutOfBed2wice · 25/07/2016 17:51

This would have made me laugh a lot and I would have displayed it prominently. But then maybe I'm not normal.

blue2014 · 25/07/2016 17:53

I'm not sure it will work for me to explain why I find something funny if you don't find it funny.

Humour is individual and no amount of explaining is going to make something funny if it's not funny to you. If it's not funny to you, that's ok with me but I also know a bunch of my friends would have loved it too.

NapQueen · 25/07/2016 17:57

I think what I like about it is the stark contrast - delicate floral embroidery and font with a sharp and brutal message which clearly isn't an actual threat.

DropYourSword · 25/07/2016 18:01

Clearly it depends on your friends sense of humor. I think it's funny.

fastdaytears · 25/07/2016 18:02

I like it! Sorry everyone else!

divafever99 · 25/07/2016 18:02

Would "you wake them, you take them" not be better? Cut just sounds really odd.

isthatpoisontoo · 25/07/2016 18:03

I'm 32 weeks pregnant and would love that as a gift! Definitely funny. Suspect that it's not worth risking it if you aren't sure your friend would think so, though.

isthatpoisontoo · 25/07/2016 18:05

Re: the less offensive versions suggested, I don't think there's a middle ground. It is only funny because of the sharp contrast between the form and content. Water it down and it is just twee.

sallysparrow157 · 25/07/2016 18:15

how about shop.subversivecrossstitch.com/collections/all-kits/products/babies-suck or shop.subversivecrossstitch.com/collections/all-kits/products/welcome-tiny-overlord ? similar concept without the actual threat of violence!

Footle · 25/07/2016 18:17

Or you could do 'Go the fuck to sleep ' with a clip of Tim Minchin playing and singing it. That would be nicer but still arresting.
