Has anyone found out the sex of a baby at your scan but it's been wrong? I wondered how often that happens?

Not me but a close friend got told girl and she had a boy. Never known it happen to anyone else though in RL!

RNBrie · 13/05/2016 18:53

It's wrong about 5% of the time according to the leaflet I was given at my 20 week scan but they will usually tell you that it's not completely clear if there's any doubt.

Shorthairedlayabout · 13/05/2016 19:14

It happened to me. They said I was having a girl...it was quite a shock when my husband told the busy midwives I'd actually had a boy!

JemTheAngel · 13/05/2016 19:16

Happened to someone I worked with. She was told she was having a boy, painted room for boy, boyish pram... had a girl!

duckyneedsaclean · 13/05/2016 19:18

Yep.. My "99.99% girl" had a willy when he was born.

startrek90 · 13/05/2016 19:21

It happened to a friend of mine. She was told she was having a girl and got loads of pink/dresses etc... Found out a week before birth that she was a he. Grin

My mum was told she was having a boy when pregnant with me and my middle sister Wink when they told her she was having another girl when pregnant with my littlest sister she didn't believe them lol

thequeenofsandwich · 13/05/2016 19:24

A colleague was told to expect twin girls , she gave birth to a girl and a boy

MummaGiles · 13/05/2016 19:25

Not me but someone I met through NCT was told girl but had a boy. Think there's less chance of a mix up when you're told a boy, given they have to see something for that!

Majorlyscared1993 · 13/05/2016 19:25

A friend of mine was told she was having a girl.... Ended up being a girl with a willy.

It was actually quite a difficult thing for her to deal with, after decorating the room and buying clothes and picking a name... I think it was a bit like grieving for her.

ILoveAGoodBrusselSprout · 13/05/2016 19:26

I was told that my twins were 2 girls at my scan, but my later amino I showed they were a boy and a girl

dylsmimi · 13/05/2016 19:27

The lady in the next bed to me when I had dc2 had been told girl - I think she had a couple of boys already and it was a boy. There were lots of phone calls about returning prams and outfits but her mum was really upset and kept saying 'I just can't believe it, I'm so upset about this' !! I felt so sorry for the mum (of the baby) as that's a horrible thing to say when you had a healthy baby a few hours before

I was told I was having a girl and had a boy!

liberatedwine · 13/05/2016 19:58

My 3rd child was breech and I was scanned at 38 weeks to see if the baby could be turned/had turned or whether a c-section was needed. I was told he was perfectly healthy and all ready for a normal delivery. He? I queried. Oops, didn't you know? said the radiographer.

8 days later, after telling my 2 older boys to expect a little brother, my daughter was born. My boys have never forgiven me for not providing them with the brother I'd promised.

bumblebee86 · 13/05/2016 20:06

I'd heard it happens when you are told it's a girl and then it's not. It seems quite common and I wonder if actually it's better not to know in case it's wrong, because like you say Majorlyscared1993 I think it would be hard to have picked a name, bought things and imagined that little person and then it's a different sex?

My sister got told a girl, then it turned out to be a boy.

willfuckformichilenstarfood · 13/05/2016 23:18

My best friend had a private scan, they said girl, then went to NHS scan and they said boy, she went back for a private scan and they confirmed girl. She gave birth to a girl Smile

bumblebee86 · 14/05/2016 11:42

So it seems mainly they get the sex wrong when they say it's a girl? Anyone been told they are having a girl and it was right? I guess they must get it right sometimes?

Yes me my Dd was called Mathew till she was born tbf they did say maybe boy and not for definate

peggyundercrackers · 14/05/2016 12:06

At both my scans the woman doing the scan said she couldn't guarantee what she told us was correct because they get it wrong quite a bit. Both times though we were told the correct sex.

mrschatty · 14/05/2016 12:13

My dh good friend was told girl and had a lovely wee boy. It put him off asking at the scan!

MintyBojingles · 14/05/2016 16:21

I got told girl for DD, who is in fact a girl. Been told boy this time, and from the scan I'd be very surprised if they were wrong! I don't know anyone who got told the wrong gender, but obviously it does happen.

underrugsswept · 14/05/2016 16:38

Yes, my friend was told girl at two scans by two different people and then at the third one they announced it was a boy (it was!).

whatamess0815 · 14/05/2016 16:54

happened to two friends. both told girl but ended up having boys. seems more common to get it wrong this way rather than mistaking a girl for a boy.

Scarydinosaurs · 14/05/2016 17:03

I think the vast majority of the time when they say it is a girl, they're right 😂

Boys get mistake for girls because of angles etc but you rarely get girls who are mistaken for boys.

I worked out I was having a girl because of comments the sonographers made at my many scans- all said "couldn't tell anyway, can't be 100%" so I translated that to mean- girl.
