Has anyone found out the sex of a baby at your scan but it's been wrong? I wondered how often that happens?

I was told at 14 weeks I was having a boy (scan via dildo cam)
I was then told at 20 weeks I was definitely having a girl (amniocentesis)
To be clear, I didn't care at all and took the first comment with a pinch of salt as
a) I thought it was too soon to know
b) I could never spot anything on ultra sounds anyway
but had I told my family there might have been completely ridiculous disappointments.

Pray tell what's a dildo cam?!

I mean, I can kind of work out from the term Grin but why have I not heard of this? Is it a DIY thing Grinor a legitimate medical procedure?

Whatever it is it sounds, well, quite thrilling!

Sorry to de-rail.

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 15/05/2016 16:56

So not thrilling and despite being 39 with one child already and having lived a little I was Shock and Blush
If you google "internal ultrasound wand" it will give you an idea of what one looks like.
I am not in the UK so do not know whether they do them there, it is a proper medical procedure in the first trimester but it was a surprise to me and not a pleasant one. That said the male gynae with dc2 at least tried to be gentle, his wife with dc3 was rough Angry I think anyone using a speculum or an ultrasound wand or a ventouse plunger should think before plunging them in: if this was my vagina how would I like this to go? I understand the need for speed and businesslike approach but anything like that can be triggering.

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 15/05/2016 17:04

Sorry if that ^sounds very serious given I used the flippant term dildo cam in the first place!
Some women find them to be painless and fine, others find them to be uncomfortable and traumatising.
My problem was being a bit WTAF!!.because with dc1 in the UK I only ever had jelly on belly ultrasounds.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 15/05/2016 17:07

I know 2 people who were told they were having boys and they had girls and one who was meant to be having a girl and actually went on to have a boy!

One of the reasons I didn't want to find out!Grin

bumblebee86 · 17/05/2016 10:58

Would the fact that is not 100% put anyone off from finding out? I really want to, but don't know how I would feel if we planned for one sex and it turned out to be the other

Yes,see my post above!Smile

In UK they use dildo cam for early scans as it gives a better picture at that stage, I had one at 7 weeks. Was painless and less uncomfortable than a smear although I was so terrified of potential MC I was more concentrated on this!

Lulabells · 17/05/2016 17:56

I've already got a DD and was told this one was a little boy. I was 99% convinced this one was a girl too as were both our families so it was a HUGE shock. After reading these posts I'm not returning the pink baby grows I bought at 19 weeks until after he arrives (only 10 weeks to go!!).

Frazzled2207 · 17/05/2016 18:22

At ds2's 20 week scan it was, um, very obvious to everyone that was there that he was a he.
It really can't have possibly been wrong.
Our hospital policy is to never be definite about it, but the sonographer agreed with us there was no chance he was a she.
