Hyperemesis Support

I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Sorry for not posting. Thank you for those of you who have kept me in your thoughts...I really appreciate it especially as I know the earlier stages you are at is dreadful.

Had a rough week. Still having contractions daily. Yesterday was awful. Started at 11am 10 minutes apart and increased to 5 minutes apart but midwifed would not see me. It slowly went back to 10 minutes apart but didn't stop until 2am today which meant I was shattered especially since dd woke at 6.30. Still having contractions today between 15 and 10 minutes apart. Also battling a cold, chest infection and the hg. Feel like I'm breaking down but trying to remind myself I'm 38+3 now so unless I go 2 weeks over, there isn't (hopefully) that long left. Just feels like I've been pregnant forever especially as I was pregnant in June with the second baby I lost. So haven't really had a break from hg. Sorry for the rant.
Anyway will try to catch up properly soon. Always thinking of you all though. Hugs to all.

mrsmonkey14 · 18/04/2016 21:32

Oh reebok you poor thing. I can't understand why they wouldn't induce you in 4 days when you hit 39w? (Assuming that's something you would want?) thinking of you lots xx

Reebok · 18/04/2016 21:37

They keep saying I will likely go into labour soon. And my hospital won't offer induction until 40+...

MotherofPearl · 18/04/2016 21:56

Reebok, I can't believe your ordeal is still dragging on - all sympathy. You're very nearly there now, and think how wonderful it will feel to be free of pain and HG. We're all rooting for you. Same goes for Icant. Really not the ideal time for you to move I'm sure, but if it's unavoidable then do make sure you don't lift a finger and others do all the work. You're being induced exactly one week before me Icant!
MrsMonkey, sorry to hear you're suffering with the tiredness. And yes, I tried weaning myself off Ondansetron several times and then realised it was a mistake as it always made me regress. Even now I still take one a day. It can be easy to think you've improved but then when you stop the meds you realise that you haven't really!
Rae, hope those carrots stayed down!
Twinkle, hope the new doctor is knowledgeable and understanding - good luck for your appointment tomorrow.
Rocket, glad the medication is working so well. As others have said, excess acid definitely seems to play a part in HG.
I've not posted for a few days as my phone locked me out of MN and I couldn't remember my password! Managed to sort it out today. I'm still staggering on, or should that be waddling?! All that talk of kaftans made me Smile. At present I only have about 2 maternity outfits that I feel comfortable in, everything else feels so tight on my bump. I anticipate this being a huge baby, even though it was so nutrient deprived for months.
I'd better try to get some sleep. Struggling with awful insomnia. Cheerful waves to Lucinda, Spandau, Squeezed, Ickle, Special, MrsSleepy and anyone else I've rudely overlooked. Hope everyone is surviving OK.

RaeSkywalker · 18/04/2016 22:12

Oh reebok you poor thing! I'm really shocked that they aren't doing more to help you- I hope things change soon.

Mother carrots stayed down until god awful constipation kicked in again, I was then quite violently sick but I genuinely think it was caused by the stomach pain rather than HG. Going to call my GP tomorrow and ask if there's anything they can do about it. I'm forcing fybogel down but it's doing nothing to help and I think DH is going to lose the plot if he has to hear me sobbing in pain again. Plus I will lose the plot because it flipping hurts. Scared they might take my ondansetron off me though!!

MotherofPearl · 18/04/2016 22:19

Rae, I know this sounds unpleasant, but have you tried glycerol suppositories for the constipation? I found them a real help when I was on 3 Ondan a day and suffering from awful constipation. You can buy them cheaply off the shelf in Boots (I got my DP to buy them as it was during the weeks when I couldn't leave the house). Using one a day helped to give some relief. Good luck!

RaeSkywalker · 18/04/2016 22:48

That is a great idea Mother! I thought they were prescription only. Great news that they aren't and a nice little shopping trip for DH Wink Thank you!

TweedAddict · 18/04/2016 22:54

Hello ladies. I'm just place marking at the minute. I found this thread after I lost a baby partly due to some issues with HG and then preeclampsia. I've just found out I'm pregnant again so getting all the support up front this time. I'll check in tomorrow with the full story and help any others where I can

icklekid · 19/04/2016 06:16

Waves at tweed big welcome and fingers crossed for a hg free pregnancy however we are all here if not!

rae constipation seems to come and go here but last few days have been awful (also on ondansetron) so painful 😰 hope the suppositories help. However vegetables is an incredible achievement so congratulations!

motherofpearl I had so few maternity outfits last time have treated myself to a few more but the end stage anything that fits is the way to go!

reebok come on baby! Fingers crossed contractions aren't constant all day today unless they produce a baby! Have you got someone who is helping with dd? I know by the end of pregnancy I will be on summer holidays and have ds constantly! It is going to be interesting however lots of friends locally who have already said will help and I plan to spend every day outside by that point!

mrsmonkey my dh is the same. I've given up caring and gently remind him about 15/20 mins before anything is due. He is getting better slowly. He used to only cook for him and every eve I would ask if he left any for ds. Now he always does extra! Hope you can rest as that's the only thing that works for my tiredness.

Work was surprisingly good yesterday. Had said I wouldn't go in today but going to have to for an hour to get some bits sorted as was off so much last term and needs doing. Need to get back to speak to builders though as want to know when my house is turning into a building site 🙈

Ages ago was a conversation on how long food stays in my stomach. I seem to be able to eat at lunch time however when I go to bed I am very violently sick. How is this possible? From 1pm to 9pm???! I give up on eating but then have energy

icklekid · 19/04/2016 06:16

Have no energy!

MotherofPearl · 19/04/2016 10:27

Ickle, the slow moving food thing seems to be pretty common. I also find it so weird how food can come up completely undigested hours and hours after eating it.
In my post last night I meant to ask after Fresh. How are you faring now?
Lovely sunny day here. I've stopped all the crazy cleaning and nesting mania and am sitting on a chair in the garden, getting some Vit D! The fresh air helps takes the edge off the nausea.
Hope everyone has a reasonable day.

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 19/04/2016 11:01

Reebok thinking of you and wishing that things really get going very quickly.

Kayleighann · 19/04/2016 11:49

Hi ladies I hope u don't mind me joining you.
We have just started ttc baby number 3 and I'm feeling a bit un settled about it due to already having hg in last pregnancy.
We have have been unsure for so long we now have a huge age gap, first is 9 and second 6.
Oh is getting me down as he has agreed to having a third but due to the hg it took a lot of persuading!! He's not on board with me at all and says he can't afford time off (he's self employed) so if I get hg I'm on my own basically!
He has agreed to having a third but for my sake, he says he's happy with 2 and can't be bothered with the stress of another pregnancy but if it's what I want then we will.
I feel weird about it all as my first 2 children we were both so excited but this time I'm completely alone : / I came off my pill last wk and now have my first AF and I should be feeling excited but instead I feel worried.

Twinklelittlestar1 · 19/04/2016 12:21

Hi all, just a quick one from me to say my new (heavily pregnant) GP was so great. She basically said we have to keep trying til we tins what works which was such a relief. Yesterday was an awful day but much better today and started taking metoclopromide alongside the Phenergan now. How this is the combo that helps. My friend is on her way over.

RaeSkywalker · 19/04/2016 12:25

Hi tweed!

ickle it's just horrendous isn't it!

I've just talked to my GP on the phone- as when I looked at glycerol suppositories on the Boots website it said I should do so. He's really freaked me out! He said they work by causing "contractions" but he thinks the suppository is only absorbed locally so the womb "probably won't be affected".

He's written me a prescription for DH to collect. I don't know if I want to take them now, the GP made it sound a bit reckless!

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 19/04/2016 14:04

kayleigh welcome and wishing you the best of luck.

Hvae you got (or can you find) an HG-friendly doctor? that makes an absolute world of difference. If you can find someone who is willing to prescribe appropriate meds, that really, really helps. There's some evidence that starting the meds early is a good idea.

Also, it might be an idea to eat as much as you can (healthily!) to store up your reserves.

Is there any chance of arranging good child care for the little ones? trying to take care of a little one when you have HG is a huge, huge extra drain.

Post whenever you need to, this thread is a brilliant support.

Twinkle very glad to hear you got the Meto. it really helps some people (works by making your stomach process the food much faster) but if you get twitchy / bad limb restlessness then do say. It's a rare but slightly worrying side effect. it's considered 100% safe for the baby tho.

MotherofPearl · 19/04/2016 14:26

Welcome to Tweed and Kayleigh.
Rae, of course if it's going to make you anxious then don't use the suppositories. But if it's any reassurance they are routinely used on ante-natal wards. One woman on the thread from 2012, Kalidasa, suffered from horrendous HG and was on the max meds. She was admitted to hospital several times and they always treated her constipation with suppositories or enemas. GPs tend to be more cautious than hospital-based HCPs I guess. Anyway, don't do anything that makes you worry - that's the last thing you need!

LucindaE · 19/04/2016 14:28

Welcome to TweedAddict and Kayleighann.
Tweed I am so sorry for your previous loss. You will find a lot of support here if necessary.
Kayleighann. You are brave to go for it. It might be an idea to have a plan drawn up about how to cope with kids if you are struck down again: -after school club, friends, neighbours, or maybe even some paid help if affordable? Because of the age gap, they are of an age where they will understand and be less frightened by what is happening,, if you are unlucky, and are ill again. Also, it's worthwhile asking for pre-emptive meds, but as you're a veteran, I'm sure that just might have occured to you!
Reebok Oh no. How awful fo ryou, still suffering. Is the cervix tightly closed? They seem to be being remarkably inhumane, to be honest. I can only offer gentle cyber pats. I won't say, 'This Too Will Pass' as you may be tempted to tell me what to do with that mantra...Rant away. Who wouldn't?
Raeskywalker Congratulations on carrots. I think it unlikely they will take you off Ondansetron, surely. They are more likely to offer meds for the awful constipation. From others' experience it would appear that prune juice does work.
I take my hat off to all those who manage to keep fybrogel down! I find it nauseating without Hyperemesis.
Mrsmonkey Sorry to hear of bad few days and prune juice horrors. My experience was that it kicked off later than average, too - it was ten weeks for me when it got out of control. I was lucky in that Acupuncture worked for me so well. I do think that with that the needle has to be exactly in the right spot to a billioneth of an inch - then it works; my experiences with other Acupuncturists (for migraine, etc) is that it worked far less well.
Twinkle
I'm glad you've changed doctors, though sorry you have to leave the midwife, too.
MotherofPearl Lol about 'waddling on'. I am still chuckling at that 'majestic' .
Waves to OnceaMeer 1More and everyone.
Apologies if I've rudely ignored anyone.
Watch me cross post...

MotherofPearl Great advice. What you say about suppositories is so true!

OP posts:
icklekid · 19/04/2016 15:40

Good luck Kayleighann here's hoping for a hg free (or less severe hg) pregnancy this time! I'm sure when it comes to it dh will be supportive but perhaps men don't forget like women do. I'm fairly sure that's true of birth anyway!

twinkle hope you have a lovely time with your friend. Glad you have a GP who will persevere until you find something that works

rae i'm afraid I know nothing about suppositories so can't help there! However the fact he still gave you prescription and others say used on wards would suggest they are safe to me..

Well have managed 2 mornings at work and sickness isn't too bad so feeling positive! Smile just one more morning to go. Also looks like building work will remain dust free for an extra week before steel/break through starts so that's a relief although I realise am just putting off the inevitable at the moment.

icklekid · 19/04/2016 15:41

Oh also meant to post a link to this bounty article saw on facebook. Apparently 56% of babies born post HG are girls. I take these things with a large pinch of salt!

RaeSkywalker · 19/04/2016 15:57

Thanks Mother, I think I'll just give them a go. I'm in so much pain with it that I don't think I've got another option really, it's going to have a massive impact on my life if I'm on the loo for 3 hours a day. There's no way I could go back to work for example as it's making me quite anxious.

Lucinda fybogel is totally rank! I really had to psyche myself up to take it and time it in a 'least likely to throw up' window. Haven't bothered with it today, feeling too sick to attempt it.

ickle great news about work! Does it feel good to be back? I miss work so much but HR have said I can only go back when I've had 7 'good' days in a row. Told my boss I might be seeing her after maternity leave if this carries on!

As for the article- DH and I are both convinced that ours is a boy, based entirely on how sick I'm being. I'm not sure what that says about us!

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 19/04/2016 16:30

and hello Tweed, sorry I missed you. Best of luck.

Kayleighann · 19/04/2016 19:07

Thank you for all your comments.
I'm really hoping I don't get HG this time but I just feel like I will. I won't be lucky enough to not get it.
We almost said no more babies because of hg but I feel like I can't look back in years to come and think I didn't have one because of hg.
I'm going to the drs nxt wk, she was very supportive last time and gave me meds as soon as I needed so I will discuss starting the meds as soon as I get a bfp.

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 19/04/2016 21:08

oh good, a supportive GP makes a huge difference!
