I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!scenario

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Hi everyone Smile Hope you are all well, not had chance to read through all the posts so I apologise if I don't pass on my regards to anyone needing it!
So I was on here a few weeks back suffering with the horrid MS! I am still on promethazine at the minute 10mcg twice a day. The thing is although it had reduced the sickness I am still sick once or twice a day & feel sick most of the day.
I take one tablet after breakfast & 1 after dinner. My sickness is worse in the evenings...I can guarantee that by 5-5.30 I will be feeling totally rubbish or being sick.
when do you take your tablets? Do you think taking one in morning & 1 in afternoon will be better?
Managing to eat a bit better, but still feel like shit! 10 weeks today so hoping the sickness will ease IN next few weeks.... but with my DS I had it for first 5-6 months so not holding my breath. Xx

mrsmonkey14 · 30/03/2016 15:21

Sorry to hear that 1more, yes I try to take my tablets earlier in the day as evenings worse for me too.

1moretime · 30/03/2016 15:26

Hi mrsmonkey14
Im wondering if I took the second one later if it would stop me being so sick in the afternoons?
Is your sickness still bad altho your on medication hun? X

SleepymrsE · 30/03/2016 18:18

Hi 1more, you may need to be put on a combination of medication if the promethezine isn't working for you. Not sure what the max dose is - if it's 3 could you add another tablet in the day? If not you could visit your GP for an additional medication to take in between your promethezine? Luckily my combination has pretty much stopped me being sick but still feel very nauseous, especially in evenings when tired (like I feel at the moment).

DH got in from work and told me I looked rough - thanks darling!

LucindaE · 30/03/2016 18:18

Such good advice and support on here, Mother Hen has little to add.
Ican't Goodness, spleen removal and liver op, how awful. I do feel for you. This has been a terrible ordeal. Thank goodness baby is flourishing. I can only add my admiration of your stoicism to the others.
spandau Oh dear. Are you on crutches now with the spd? Sorry things are so bad.
Reebok and squeezed I hope things are bearable. squeezed and Special those foam vomits are quite alarming. I once produced a whole bowl of foam (I think much Gaviscon caused it).
RocketSorry you have been in hospital. I so agree with others, that it's not good that you are vomiting again so soon and unfortunately, you will probably need extra meds. I hadn't heard that about metrocloprimide (spelling) as I've heard of lots of people who have been on it in the first tri. I think the counter indication is if the mother becomes 'twitchy' which is unusual. I gather it does help speed absorption of food, and the food not being absorbed can go with this and seems to go with a generally upset stomach(I get it with migraine, too). The links at the top of this thread give good advice about the different meds.
mrsmonkeySorry to hear of GP being so unhelpful. S/he should know better.
I so agree with Icklekid and others that you mustn't allow yourself to be forced back, and showing ketones if they rise is such a good idea.
Raeskywalker Again, I so agree with others that is so unprofessional and annoying, though of course, if you confirm your pregnancy then they can't hold your sick leave against you without contravening the sex discrimination laws. For all that, some companies do try it on. Reebok's school gave her a very hard time.
icklekid Much sympathy over disappointment. I think three or four times a day is a lot to cope with, if you're contemplating going back.
Special and SleepymrsE Good luck with scans.
Waves to eallison and everyone.
1moretime Welcome back. That sounds like a good idea.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked or with whom I have cross posted

Back soon.

Sorry too exhausted to reply to everyone but sleepy scone was amazing!

MotherofPearl · 30/03/2016 20:56

Hello everyone. Still here and getting desperate for start of maternity leave. Just need to get through to the end of next week. Has anyone else in the later stages of pregnancy noticed that while voms may be fewer, they are more violent? Today I was so forcefully sick and retched so hard that I gave myself a nosebleed. Confused
Rocket, that slow emptying stomach thing seems pretty typical, or at least it was for me for the first 20 weeks or so. Sometimes whole meals came up totally undigested after 5 hours! This has improved as time has gone on.
Special, good luck for your 20 week scan. Mine was not accompanied by a midwife appointment.
MrsMonkey, Ickle is right about going back to work. Don't allow your GP to guilt trip you back to work. I was signed off for 2 months in the end.
Thinking of poor Icant and Reebok and hoping they are OK. Also sorry to hear Spandau is in such bad shape with sickness and SPD. We are really on the home stretch now Spandau. And Squeezed is not far behind.
Meant to say welcome to Rae and welcome back to 1more. Hang in there; the early days are horrendous but things do invariably improve.
Waves to Sleepy, Ickle, Ealli, Lucinda and anyone I've stupidly missed out.

spandau1980 · 30/03/2016 21:04

Thanks MOP x
Keep scratching the days off on the calendar
Got scan tomorrow and will hopefully get my blood results back asap
Feet have puffed up and blood pressure was 135/75 test
I'm usually v low blood pressure so bit worried now :( x

MotherofPearl · 30/03/2016 22:19

Good luck for tomorrow's scan Spandau. X

icklekid · 31/03/2016 05:28

spandau please take it as easy as you can - how old are your other dc? Could they help with packing hospital bag whilst you direct? Hope scan goes well tomorrow

1more I've always been on minimum of 3 tablets so morning, lunch then about 6pm. At the moment I also take 2 cyclazine around 10 and 3.

sleepy my dh is just as charming! I think he just tries to make me laugh knowing I'm prone to getting a bit down about how long this is dragging on for. Last night he told ds we could go to park after he'd eaten his tea I presumed he would take him but no we were both going. It was the only thing I'd really done yesterday but did exhaust me!

motherofpearl you are so close!!! Hope it goes quickly and before you know it this sickness will be a distant memory. Sorry to hear about the nose bleed. I had a horrific nose blocked whilst being sick incident which I will spare you all suffice to say this cold needs to do one!

I slept until 5am! I can't explain how good it feels to actually wake up refreshed! Also dh is under strict instructions to not let me even attempt to eat anything in the eve because it is just not worth it. I do so well then a friend brings round something delicious looking (different friends are bringing 1 a week for ds/dh!) And I can't resist. But no must resist and buy more ice lollies!

mrsmonkey14 · 31/03/2016 09:40

Morning everyone, just a quick one from me.
spandau so sorry to hear SPD is worse. Good luck for scan.
MOP Yes! Definitely noticed vomiting is more violent now (23wk), that's exactly how I described it to DH. Very forceful and I can't catch my breath, it's hard to remain on my feet. Sorry to hear about the nosebleed.
ickle I am exactly the same about evenings - I now don't eat anything after about 5pm, I have a drink of choc milk if I can manage but that's it. I find going to bed the only solution! Have to leave the room before DH cooks his tea cos of smell.
1more I'm afraid yes I am still sick on meds, but much less so - so not even every day (compared to 12-16 wks - vomiting almost everything I ate). However I do have to strictly limit my food and drink intake in order to not vomit. I believe though that I (and some of the others on this thread who are further along) are unlucky to have this continue throughout the pregnancy, as for some i understand it can get a lot better after the first trimester /16 wks Ish. Others on this thread can prob advise much better than me though.
I'm in a tired-but-can't-sleep grump. I find it so hard to rest even though I know I must.
Thanks for all the support re possible return to work. I'm getting stressed about it but need to just wait til the weekend and make a decision then. X

SpecialStains · 31/03/2016 15:35

Hello.

Had my scan. We're having a lovely, healthy baby, and there was no doubt that he is a boy! He is even measuring a little bit bigger than dates! He was a little sleepy at my 9am appointment, but sonographer managed to wake him up by prodding him. So relieved everything is all OK (heart beat/chambers all perfectly normal!).

Grin

No idea how my big baby is fitting in, as even the sonographer agreed I didn't have much bump, but he is perfectly sized!

Hope everyone else is coping. Baby scans are amazing! I can feel him kicking at the moment as well. Finally getting some nice bits of pregnancy!

mrsmonkey14 · 31/03/2016 16:14

Fabulous news special, very pleased for you - was that 20wk?

Lynn5 · 31/03/2016 17:04

Hello everyone. So stressed out just now, been taking cyclizine and the one that dizzolves between your gums?! ( can't be bothered getting out of bed to read the name) which had been helping. But vomiting again, so back to GP and she does mention hyperemesis this time. So she just checks my urine blood pressure etc. Then I leave. I inform my employer that this is what I have and I get a not to caring reply back ignoring what I said and asking when my return date will be?! The thing is I've had loads of time off, reduced hours and many many melt downs while going through fertility treatment which they have been pretty good about. Whereas now I think they're just getting fed up. I'm due back next week (I've been off for 5 weeks already due to bleeding) and I'm only 8 weeks!!! But if this vomiting nausea carrys in then I'm not sure what I'll do!!! I can barely get out of bed sometimes. Please help?!

LucindaE · 31/03/2016 18:35

Lyn Sorry you feel so stressed. I'm glad work have been understanding before, but the thing is, they can't allow sick leave connected with pregnancy to be used against you in sickness records, etc because of legislation.
SpecialStains Great news on scan.
MotherofPearl Sorry to hear of nose bleed. They are the last straw, and nearly as nasty as bleeding from the throat. Thank goodness you are nearly on maternity leave.
Much sympathy to all feeling foul.

OP posts:
MotherofPearl · 31/03/2016 19:28

Special, lovely to hear about your scan and your baby boy! Scans really do help to make it feel real and exciting.
I wonder how Spandau got on with her scan?
Lynn, I'm sorry to hear things are so bad. If you look back a few days on the thread someone posted information about pregnancy related sickness rights. You can also look at the extensive information for employers and employees on the Pregnancy Sickness Support website. The link is in Lucinda's OP.
Meanwhile it doesn't sound as if the meds your doctor has prescribed are working. Could you ask for Ondansetron? Some doctors are reluctant to prescribe it because it is very expensive, but it is the best. I won't say it removes all sickness and it's not done a huge amount for my nausea, but it's made me functional and able to have a reasonable quality of life. Lots of us on the thread have been helped by it. Good luck!

mrsmonkey14 · 31/03/2016 20:00

Hi lynn, sorry to hear you're feeling rough. I'll save you getting out of bed, I think you mean buccastem. Have you got a doctors note from GP saying not fit to work? My work were very difficult until I stopped engaging and giving details and just emailed to say I won't be in as doctor said I'm not fit to work, I'll update you on X date, here is a copy of the note. They may well be fed up but sadly I think you have to try to be thick skinned and ignore it - you have to look after yourself and baby. If they ask when you will return just say when you are signed off until and say you will reassess with GP at the end of that period.
Good luck.

icklekid · 01/04/2016 07:38

mrsmonkey in a sad way I'm glad I'm not the only one still being sick despite combination of medication. Hope Dr help make the return to work decision for you I have no clue what I'm going to do about after easter holidays so going to see what they suggest...

special yay for a boy and even better a healthy scan. Am actually really looking forward to mine a week on Monday as something positive however then aware that's the last scan. Half way there...!

lynn agree with others just send Dr note and say will be in touch when it ends to let them know how you are doing. Best to be honest and say it is quite possible you will be off for as long as Dr recommended as your health and baby health is important.

Waves at everyone else and sends big bunches of Flowers to each of you. It was dh and my wedding anniversary (neither of us were organised enough to get cards!) Mil came round with flowers and wine. One for me and one for dh! Ds present was he slept until 6.30 this morning! This might sound early however for him it is a miracle! If only clocks could go forward more often Wink

SleepymrsE · 01/04/2016 09:27

Morning all, just a quick one. Had my 12 week scan yesterday afternoon. All looked ok so now just got to wait for screening results. The midwife had to get an anesthetist from the labour ward to come and take my blood. We were there nearly 3 hours. Baby looked very chilled laid with its hand behind its head! Also put on another 1lb!! Midwife was great about sickness & meds and said if it gets worse again to get straight back to doctors!

mrsmonkey14 · 01/04/2016 10:47

Ha ha that's ok ickle, we're vomit buddies.
You are right it is more helpful when the doctors make decisions for us about going back to work. The consultant did say not to go back until I have no symptoms...
Great to hear scan was good sleepy! Well done you and baby.

LucindaE · 01/04/2016 11:39

MotherofPearl How are you? I hope no more sink vomits. Glad that you've got maternity leave so soon. Very good advice for Lyn especially. I so agree with it. It does seem as if Ondansetron may be needed. As you say, they generally delay with prescribing that, because of the expense.
mrsmonkey It's good when dr's make decisions for you. Good advice about being assertive with doubting employers; too. You are so right; you and baby must come first. In fact, whatever employers would have us think with their guilt induction, it's a fact that none of us are indispensable, except for our babies and LO's.
icklid How is the vomiting now? It is disappointing for those who have this badly enough for even combinations of medicines not to work.
SleepymrsE Congratulations on scan. A nice boost for you.
Waves to eallison. How are Reebok, Ican't, squeezed spandau and how is everyone?

OP posts:
MotherofPearl · 01/04/2016 13:47

Thanks for asking after me Lucinda. I've good and bad news. I had a midwife appointment this morning and the good news is that the baby has turned and is now head down and behaving itself. No more talk of c sections thank goodness. In less good news I seem to have caught Ickle's cold! Feeling dreadful with it, so congested and of course the coughing brings on retching. What fresh hell is this?
Ickle belated happy wedding anniversary!
Sleepy, great news about healthy scan.
MrsMonkey, hope you're taking it easy. I think follow consultant's advice about not going back until you're symptom free.
Worried about Reebok and Icant.

Reebok · 01/04/2016 15:12

Sorry haven't been on much. Not much change here. Lots of contractions but I've made it to 36 weeks today.

Congrats on the scans special, sleepy and squeezed.

Spandau hope your scan goes well.

Mop you're nearly there and doing so well.

Thinking of icant.

Mrsamerica, monkey, 1more, Ickle, Lynn and others...thinking of you too. Sorry not to reply to everyone individually. I

LucindaE · 01/04/2016 17:18

MotherofPearl Congratulations on baby turning! Sorry about catching that cold. Colds are so bad for bringing on retching, and this one is particularly nasty.
Reebok So glad you've reached 36 weeks! Phew! But you must be so fed up with those contractions.
Thinking of everyone.
