Did your sweep work?

Hi just had a sweep (40+3) this morning. I was 1-2cm dilated. I am going to have another on Tuesday and if nothing happens induction the following Monday. Just wondered how many of you have had sweeps work for going into labour? I had 2 maybe 3 with my first child and none of them worked but I also was not dialted at the time so maybe that makes a difference? Also how did you feel afters? I don't feel any different!!

Two sweeps with DC1. Did not work.

PutDownThatLaptop · 29/01/2016 16:13

Oh my goodness yes. Had sweep, went home, came back 2 hours later and then baby was born three hours after that. Third baby, 40 + 10.

I've just noticed some pink tinged discharge (tmi!) midwife said that's normal but hoping its mucus plug!

Doesn't seem thick enough though

One with DC1. Gave me some pains and made me a bit upset but did not start labour.

Didn't bother with number 2.

Good luck for a speedy and easy labour in the very near future!

I had a sweep on Wednesday and was 1cm dilated. Absolutely nothing has happened since. I had some slightly thicker discharge with a pale brown tinge but that's it - not the mucuos plug. I seem to recall with dc1 that my plug went soon after the sweep but nothing happened and I was still induced. Got my next sweep on Wednesday so will see. I'm not holding out much hope. I think they only work if you are ready.

JacquelineChan · 29/01/2016 17:12

I had 2 they didn't work I found them so painful . I refused the 3rd. Baby turned up in his own time .
Good luck with everything OP this is such an exciting time . (i'm not broody much )

Had my first one at 39+2, had 4 days of cramps, lost my plug, loads of discharge, no baby.

Had my second at 40+2. Midwife said cervix didn't look any more encouraging than it had a week before, still thick, still only 1cm dilated. She said it certainly didn't look like I was about to go into labour spontaneously. Waters started to leak 5 hours later (Monday evening). Was booked in for an induction on Wednesday morning but went into labour on my own at 3am and my son was born at 6! I am pretty sure it was the sweep that did it.

emm2016x · 29/01/2016 17:16

I had my first one on Wednesday (40+4) and it hasn't worked. Got a second one booked for Monday and midwife is also going to book me in to be induced for late next week which I'll be nearly 2 weeks overdue. Fingers crossed my little lady comes before the second sweep. She's got the weekend to make an appearance lol.

HooseRice · 29/01/2016 17:20

Had several sweeps in the two weeks that DD1 was overdue. My MW was a neighbour so popped in on her way home from work Grin

They didn't work at all so I didn't bother with DD2.

MummaGiles · 29/01/2016 17:26

They tried a sweep with me after my waters broke but They could barely reach my cervix. It didn't work and it was chuffing painful.

LibertyBelles · 29/01/2016 18:44

Failed sweep at 40 weeks exactly. Next one at 41 weeks exactly

mrslebon · 29/01/2016 18:47

I had 6 sweeps with my first pregnancy and nothing happened. The worst bit was when they said after the 5th, 'Let's going get X - he's got really big hands' Shock.

mrslebon · 29/01/2016 18:48

I meant 'Let's go and get X'...

imwithspud · 29/01/2016 18:51

With dd2, yes. I was already 2-3cm dilated though. Contractions had stopped that morning and it started things off again.

With dd1 no it didn't work.

It largely depends on various factors.

Runningupthathill82 · 29/01/2016 19:04

Didn't work for me, even though I was already 2cm dilated...

Blerg · 29/01/2016 19:19

DC one I had at least three over the 17 days I was overdue. Didn't work but really hurt and upset me. I wonder if the shock of the pain of the first one caused adrenaline release which is the last thing you want for moving labour along. I have heard others say similar including a midwive but no references, just a feeling.

I declined for DC 2 and baby came 40+13. I think optimal fetal positioning helped (from 36 weeks but can help later too) and possibly reflexology (though could be coincidence).

NotSpeaking · 29/01/2016 19:21

I decline all sweeps. Never worked and bloody painful

Followtheyellowsicktoad · 30/01/2016 12:29

I lost count on how many I had for my second and third pregnancies, I was desperate to get things moving but they didn't work. I also tried labour inducing massage (may have helped) and acupuncture (didn't work but the acupuncturist reckoned a side effect was an easier labour - that bit did seem to be true in my case).

The midwife who did my first sweep had a very high success rate, about 80% had a baby within 24 hours. Certainly worked for the woman who went after me.

Breaking my waters worked for my third and that was a last ditch measure before an ELCS.

Good luck OP, whatever happens there'll be a baby soon!

PurplePotatoes · 30/01/2016 12:32

Two sweeps with DD didn't work, despite me being 2cm dilated and fully effaced the midwife was very surprised but I still had to be induced (waters breaking only though).
Good luck op, you will be meeting your baby soon Smile

MargaretCabbage · 30/01/2016 12:35

When I went for a sweep at five days overdue my midwife said I was nowhere close to going into labour and to prepare for a likely induction, but that she was excellent at sweeps and would have a go anyway. Went into labour the next day.

Jenjen86 · 30/01/2016 12:43

I had one on Thursday, 2cm dilated and very low cervix and baby 2/5 engaged. My mucus plug came.out the next day and I had some tightenings in the eve so was hopeful but nothing today other than heavy discharge (sorry tmi) so feeling very disappointed. Going to try a long walk today and hope.for the best.

WhoKn0wsWhereTheMistletoes · 30/01/2016 12:48

Oh yes, at 40+6. Went home, was stood in the kitchen (luckily as everywhere else is carpeted) and whoosh, it was like the Niagara falls, I remember just standing there yelling at DH to fetch towels. Went into labour the same evening. Of course all that might have happened anyway, you never can tell.

SevenSeconds · 30/01/2016 12:55

I had DD within 24 hours of my sweep. Who knows if the two were related!

MYA2016 · 30/01/2016 13:32

Had a sweep on my due date. First baby. Was 1.5cm. Got home and started losing pink discharge and within 6 hrs was in full blown labour. Good luck Flowers
