Listen, don't worry (she says - ha!) and ABSOLUTELY focus on meeting your baby, holding her etc.
I'm still processing my labour; NCT didn't prep me for failed inductions etc and TBF it's only now I see what an agenda there is in the antenatal workshops.
Find someone you know and trust to talk to about induction. Typically if your cervix is favourable after a couple of sweeps/tablets then you're likely to be able to give birth vaginally. If nothing moves after a pessary or two then prepare for a CS.
My CS was a dream but i think I only got it when I did as I called their bluff after pessary #3 when my cervix hadn't dilated AT ALL and I said to the junior doctor (not on strike that day haha) "you and I both know how this will end so are you SURE you think I should be dripped on Synoctin to get things moving when you can't even get into me to break my waters"?
Think she got where I was coming from (never ask for a CS - say what are my options should the pessaries/gels fail) and after my 3rd pessary did eff all another doctor came up and said that I may wish to start considering my options whether to go for a CS or to continue on the prostaglandin pessaries (fuck that).
My CS was a dream; sure it's scary when they put the needle in for the spinal block but I was midway through telling them all how resistant I was to anaesthetic when they said "oh ok: you didn't feel your catheter go in though" and I knew it would all be ok so I just basically chattered away to my DP and then when they said "do you want to see baby" absolutely nothing else mattered in the world after that.
Postnatal care has been ace; it's a pity that one or two sub standard moments marred the antenatal care. Getting discharged tomorrow - almost sad to leave!
So in conclusion
- Be flexible with induction stuff but be aware that if the pessaries fail chances are you'll end up with a) painful accelerated vaginal delivery thanks to the drip b) a CS c) both - which I wanted to avoid at all costs and let them know this
- Do not fart about re: pain relief in the induction process. I was chomping codeine like it was sweets
- Don't ever ask for a method of labour. Say "you have to tell me what my options are now".
- CS is not scary and is over so fast. Sure your scar will hurt like hell but be gentle with your body and it'll be ok (good DPs are very handy here).
- Take all the in-hospital help you can get.
Wow; think I just did my labour story there! Getting discharged home today I think. Happy valentines
