I got a positive pregnancy test on the 4th December (10 days ago)

I was 2 days late for my period then. So about day 30 of my cycle.

Over the following days I did a few more tests and they were positive with the lines getting darker.

I have had all the usual early preg symptoms - nausea, tiredness, sore boobs, blue veins, metallic taste. Altho they have died off a bit this week.

Anyway started bleeding yesterday which has carried on til today so midwife sent me for an early scan at the epu.

They did a preg test that was faintly positive.

Then did an internal scan - she said that there wasnt really anything there. She could see a tiny empty sac that could possibly be a very early pregnancy but like about 3.5-4 weeks.

If I first tested positive 10 days ago that would have made me only 2.5-3 weeks pregnant when I tested - is it possible to get a positive test then? I would have barely conceived by then!!

Is it mroe likely that the pregnancy stopped at 4 weeks?

I have had my blood taken and have to ring in the morning to make appt to go and get it taken again to see what the HCG levels are doing.

Any insight would be great

Thanks
xxx

honey,,,,,((((((((hug))))))

you may have conceived sooner than you think, but more likely is the baby has stopped growing..have they ensured it is not an ectopic pregnancy.....? so sorry..wish i could reassure you, i really do....fingers crossed for tomorrow , re the blood tests x

lulumama · 14/12/2006 17:57

just so hard when so early as the sac is so tiny and can be hit and miss re dating absolutely.......x

PortAndLemonaid · 14/12/2006 18:01

It is more likely that the pregnancy stopped at 4 weeks, I'm afraid. They'll also need to rule out an ectopic because you can get a "pseudosac" in the uterus with those while the embryo is developing elsewhere (although that doesn't sound a particularly high risk in your case).

I'm really sorry, it's a heartbreaking position to be in. It's not absolutely definite at this stage, but the indications aren't good.

PeckaRolloverAgain · 14/12/2006 18:10

Thanks girls.

Im ok, just wish I knew either way.

Is it impossible to have a poss home preg test at 2.5-3 weeks? Its got to be hasnt it!

It is very unlikely I'm afraid. When do you ovulate, do you know? I had a positive test on day 25 of my cycle, so 3+4 (very early to test positive) but I ovulate on day 11 so was actually 14DPO (where you usually would be on the first day of a missed period). Does that make sense?

The trouble is it is so hard to accurately date from a scan this early. The hcg levels will tell you what you need to know.

I know it is agony to wait- I've been there and couldn't think of anything else. Have you tried testing with the same brand that you used at home? I tested until I was 8wks pg, always using the same brand, so same strength and the result got stronger and stronger until the test line and control line were the same.

I hope that there is a positive outcome for you.

PeckaRolloverAgain · 14/12/2006 18:35

Im not sure of when exactly I ovulated but on day 14 I had cramping which I put down to OV pains then I had a gob of stretchy spotting on day 19.

84% pregnancies implant on days 8-10 after ovulation (can you tell I spent a lot of time on the conception boards?!). So perhaps if that was implantation on day 19 you ovulated earlier in your cycle than you think and the cramps were unrelated or something to do with the corpus luteum ( I had really sharp pains on my right side a few days after I ovulated the cycle I conceived and at a 7wk scan they could see the corpus luteum exactly where the pain was ). Maybe the positive test was an early test and you conceived a few days earlier than you think.

I don't want to get your hopes up- I've been there and I know you want an answer and now. Like I said, blood tests and further scans are the only way to that answer.

I will keep everything crossed for you. Wish I could do more.

PeckaRolloverAgain · 14/12/2006 18:47

The thing is though, if I conceived earlier that would explain how I managed to get a +++ preg test but would make viable pregnancy even more unlikey as the sac measured 4 weeks at the most so if I conceived earlier by rights it should have been even more than I expected (nearly 6 weeks)

hmmmm your right, i just have to wait

Sorry I can't offer more help. Conception and early pregnancy is a bloody bugger!

Do whatever helps to pass the time- chocolate, DVD, swearing profusely. The waiting's horrible...

Gingeme · 14/12/2006 18:51

Hi PeckaRollOverAgain. My 3rd pregnancy ended in exactly the same way. I had an early scan which told me it was just a sack as the pregnancy had stopped at 4 weeks. I then soon passed the sac about 8 days later. Didnt get any cramping though just brown bleeding for a couple of days then bleeding like a period. So sorry. On the bright side I was told to wait 3 months before trying again and fell straight away for my ds3.

PeckaRolloverAgain · 14/12/2006 18:52

Letitsnow, you HAVE been helpful just giving me someone to ramble too.

Gingme - sorry about your loss, looks like that may be the way for me too. Congrats on your lovely ds3 though. They are just so gorgeous its worth all this sh*y isnt it.

have you tested again at home in the last few days?

just wondering why your tests were getting darker then theirs is only faintly positive

frustrating i know but it#s impossible to say for sure what's happening at this stage

i've had early m/cs and the same has happened to me as is happening to you. but also this pregnancy i was incorrectly scanned and told i had a non-viable pregnancy (saw a hb later that day elsewhere)

i hope you get answers soon x

PeckaRolloverAgain · 14/12/2006 18:59

on monday 4th December I did a preg test in the afternoon that was positive, faint but not very faint, certainly there

Tuesday i did a clearblue digital PREGNANT

Thursday did a clearblue a very definite cross where control adn test lines practically the same

sunday did one my hubby brought home from hospital and it was quite a dark positive

the nurse today said it didnt come up straight away and was quite faint but was positive.

Gingeme · 14/12/2006 21:02

Sorry to say this but until the sac is totaly clear of your body you will still have the pregnancy hormone in your body so it doesnt matter how many tests you do they will all be positive. I did exactly the same as it was my first baby with my new dh and I so desperately wanted to be pregnant. I just kept saying 'but its positive!'. Weve got 2 great ds's now. The latest is 7 weeks old. Dont be too disheartened babe your turn will come and it will be well worth it. Take my word for it.

PeckaRolloverAgain · 14/12/2006 21:03

I do have two wonderful kids already. DD age 7 and DS age 3. They are seeming even more wonderful today.

OP posts:
Gingeme · 14/12/2006 21:09

They sound great. I have 4 ds's! My Mum said when I lost one it was probably a girl. Nothing like cheering you up eh. How are you feeling? Was you trying long for this one? Sorry to be personal but like I said I was so desperate to get pregnant I know how heart breaking this is. I must have spent a fortune on pg tests every month if I was just one day over due for my period. It drove me to despair.

PeckaRolloverAgain · 14/12/2006 21:11

4!! wow - that must be fabulous

I was trying just 2 months for this one. Found out I was pregnant on my birthday.

Do you think its definitely over then?

OP posts:
Gingeme · 14/12/2006 21:20

Sounds very very similur to what happened to me yes. Sorry. But on a good note you can have a good drink over Christmas and start again in the New Year. I know that sounds a bit calous but thats the way I am. And yes having 4 can be wonderful especialy as the older 2 are 11 and 12 and can be oh so helpful when needed bless them. Good luck and keep going. Please please dont be too disheartened. You will fall again soon enough. I did as soon as the 3 months were up I fell pregnant almost instantly.
