Am I the only one who has a drink?

Hi,

Sorry if this is a bit random but I was wondering whether anyone else has continued to drink through pregnancy. Please don't get me wrong I do not mean drink a lot but I have 1-2 units once a week on a Friday. I feel like I am the only one that does this! I did this with first pregnancy who is now a healthy and happy 2 year old!

I do worry though that I can't seem to find many people who still enjoy a small weekly drink!

I craved cider when pregnant so bought the weakest I could find and had a small glass once or twice a week.

90sforever · 16/12/2015 18:54

I had a small glass of wine or half a lager once or twice a week after 20 weeks

Also- Natty I think it's completely bizarre that you blame your friends stillbirth on booze. how could it be connected? Booze in (very excessive) amounts causes FAS, not death of the foetus

sparechange · 16/12/2015 19:00

juno
That's very sweet of him, but you know that mulling evaporates off the alcohol anyway?! So you could have used normal booze and left it bubbling for a bit and it would end up alcohol free..?

Here's the NICE guidelines on such matters:

www.nice.org.uk/guidance/cg62/chapter/1-guidance#lifestyle-considerations

Evidence based guidance and used by professionals afaik

NattyNatural · 16/12/2015 19:08

Errm i think you'll find I said she blames herself not me!!!
Some people.

sparechange · 16/12/2015 19:12

Natty, you said she 'openly admits' it was a contributing factor
Not she 'openly wonders' or 'openly suspects'

very telling of you to use that language. You admit to guilt, ergo you see her as guilty.
Whether it was subconscious or deliberate use of the word, you've shown your true feelings by doing so. Probably best to stop digging that hole now...

NattyNatural · 16/12/2015 19:14

Wow you're an aggressive character.

No need for this kind of abuse.

Minibelle · 16/12/2015 19:14

No I didn't the risk wasn't worth it for me.

sparechange · 16/12/2015 19:19

natty
There is no abuse or aggression. You've made some pretty outrageous suggestions on the thread and then thrown your hands up and cried 'abuse' whenever anyone has challenged you.
You've also rather amusingly accused other people of being too sensitive whicj is frankly a bit rich considering your last post...

GoApeShit · 16/12/2015 19:19

Oh what a surprise. A tiff on a 'drinking whilst pregnant' thread. Hmm This kind of thing will alway divide folk.

I haven't had a drop. Mainly because I was a fairly heavy drinker prior to falling pregnant. I'm an all or nothing person (not a good thing...) and choose the 'nothing' option when pregnant. That does not mean I judge the choices of others who perhaps do differently to me.

NattyNatural · 16/12/2015 19:22

If you read my first post I said I didn't because of a situation I watched and that's all.
Nothing outrageous about that!
And all I have heard is how judgmental I supposedly am.

Quite sad from grown woman.
I'm off. I find this petty and frankly a bit weird.

Maybe it's guilt talking from your end.

Jw35 · 16/12/2015 19:37

The advice is no alcohol but it used to be thought that a glass of red was good for the baby in moderation! How times change.

Anyway yes I'll have one (if I'm not feeling sick) in any trimester. I'm pregnant now and had one a couple of weeks ago. That's one though not loads! Most of the time I don't feel like it though tbh.

YouAndMeAreGoingToFallOut · 16/12/2015 19:37

I'm just at the end of my first trimester. I haven't been drinking. I might have a glass of champagne on Christmas Day and/or NYE - I'll see how I feel. I wasn't a heavy drinker at all before pregnancy, so I wouldn't strugglers keep it to one. But at the same time, I probably won't struggle too much with not bothering!

I haven't worried about alcohol in food though e.g in sauces, and I've eaten mince pies with alcohol in them, and tiramisu. I'm not concerned about that at all. As far as I'm concerned, other women can do whatever suits them - it's none of my business.

Jw35 · 16/12/2015 19:38

Oh as for food, I do avoid soft cheese, pate and shellfish etc.

90sforever · 16/12/2015 19:47

Sorry Natty I just don't understand why anyone would think alcohol would kill a foetus. It seemed a strange thing to bring up but you've said since you don't know anything about drinking and pregnancy so fair enough. I prefer an informed decision myself, especially when considering giving up something yummy

UptownFunk00 · 16/12/2015 19:47

Only really at special occasions. But I do like a shandy (unsure how many units that is but guessing not much!?

Lilipot15 · 16/12/2015 19:52

I did the same as you OP. Obstetrician said it was fine! However I found wine tasted different and worsened my heartburn so in reality I mainly had Becks Blue shandies and non-alcoholic Kopperbergs.

Lilipot15 · 16/12/2015 19:53

I couldn't tell the difference in taste between a low-alcohol beer shandy and a normal one.

NattyNatural · 16/12/2015 19:53

I agree 90sforever.
It just scared me to the point of not risking it

Junosmum · 16/12/2015 19:56

I can understand that natty. Do you know if she was told the alcohol was a major factor or does she just suspect it (genuinely curious, not being goady, just never heard it before)?

ThursdayLastWeek · 16/12/2015 20:01

No need to avoid cooked shellfish Jw!

Ifiwasabadger · 16/12/2015 20:02

Totally with you OP.

Junosmum · 16/12/2015 20:02

And sparechange, you need to boil wine for around 2 hours to cook off the alcohol:

itsmeohlord · 16/12/2015 20:04

Not until I was 43 weeks, then I had three glasses of wine in one evening.
