Am I the only one who has a drink?

Hi,

Sorry if this is a bit random but I was wondering whether anyone else has continued to drink through pregnancy. Please don't get me wrong I do not mean drink a lot but I have 1-2 units once a week on a Friday. I feel like I am the only one that does this! I did this with first pregnancy who is now a healthy and happy 2 year old!

I do worry though that I can't seem to find many people who still enjoy a small weekly drink!

I'm an all or nothing type, so it has to be nothing for me - one drink just wouldn't cut it! I used to love my wine, so I buy DH the odd bottle and tell him he's drinking for two now Grin

Runningupthathill82 · 16/12/2015 12:17

Yep, I enjoy a small glass of wine here and there.
Didn't have any in the first trimester as just didn't fancy it, but since then I've probably averaged a small glass a week. Some weeks I might have two, but then I'll go two or three weeks without.
Depends if I'm eating out or not really, or if I'm at some sort of event. I don't drink anything at home, aside from the one occasion we had a very nice bottle of red in. Oh, and a glass of prosecco on my birthday.

dizzylemon · 16/12/2015 12:32

I was never much of a drinker prior to pregnancy so not drinking doesn't bother me. I had about 75mls of white wine at my husbands work party and realised today the mince pies and stollen I've been eating contain booze and am not worried.

I did refuse the numerous offers of jagerbombs at my own work Xmas do though ;)

AverageSnowflake01 · 16/12/2015 12:35

Nope, haven't touched the stuff since start of my pregnancy 39 weeks ago. I don't plan to drink whilst breastfeeding either. I'm paranoid like that.

AverageSnowflake01 · 16/12/2015 12:36

Actually, does tiramisu contain alcohol. I've been eating the stuff for the last few months.

CarShare · 16/12/2015 13:37

Yep- I've probably had one drink a week on average (sometimes two, sometimes none). Am now 33 weeks and will not worry about having a couple of glasses of fizz over Christmas. Each to their own Wine

seven201 · 16/12/2015 13:40

I've had the occasional small glass of wine. You're making me want one now!

Interrobanger · 16/12/2015 14:26

I had the odd glass of wine through my pregnancy. It was fine.

I never felt like having any more than half a glass though otherwise I started to feel really sick.

AmusingSpoonerism · 16/12/2015 14:29

Same here, after 20 weeks or so when I felt less awful I had the occasional glass of wine that I'd savour over several hours, I absolutely loved it!

Rpj16 · 16/12/2015 14:36

Hi op, I have the odd drink. 35 weeks now! I tried to order half a Guinness about 2 weeks ago, and as I didn't have any ID, (my 25 year old friend did!) I was not served! Was gutted, pregnant, in jeans and ugg boots, asking for half a Guinness with a meal at 6.30 on a weekday evening. I should be flattered that I look 17!?!

I think one or two a week is fine :) I wouldn't have spirits personally though, just beer or wine! Grin

Whoknewitcouldbeso · 16/12/2015 14:38

I have filled a wine glass a couple of inches a few times this pregnancy and enjoyed a couple of sips. Also a glass of Buck's Fizz on my partners birthday.

clarabellski · 16/12/2015 14:54

I thought I'd never touch alcohol again during first trimester as it was like a 2 month long hangover.

Once the morning sickness went away I've had the odd drink but, like others have said, I don't really feel it has been worth it as I just end up wanting more!!!

NattyNatural · 16/12/2015 16:03

I didn't touch a drop, wouldn't even have a chocolate that contained it.

Some people on here have said it's perfectly safe but if you ask a doctor they would strongly advise against it.

Not worth the risk, it's only 9 months of your life.

I knew someone that said it was fine to have one or two on a Friday evening and ended up having a still born. May or may not be related but worth risking??

UmbongoUnchained · 16/12/2015 16:08

Just don't understand why you would take the risk.

Impatientwino · 16/12/2015 16:10

I've had one or two small glasses of wine a week most weeks in both my last and current pregnancies after the first trimester.

Each to their own

twirlypoo · 16/12/2015 16:11

Of course its not related nattynatural what an awful post! Your poor friend, I do hope you have never told her you're judging her loss like that?

duplodancer · 16/12/2015 16:14

Of course it's not related Natty! What an appallingly ignorant thing to think.

I had a glass here or there after the first trimester. And okayed by the doctor actually.

ThursdayLastWeek · 16/12/2015 16:15

Yeah I drink. I'd say it probably averages out to a couple of units a week.

I'm especially looking forward to the Aperol spritz I'm planning on Saturday night with the strictly final Grin

ThursdayLastWeek · 16/12/2015 16:17

Oh and I did the same with DS Natty. May or may not be related to the fact that hes a healthy and strong little boy, and has been since birth.

NattyNatural · 16/12/2015 16:29

No need to be aggressive ladies.
I'm stating my opinion (and my gps!) and gave a reason why I wouldn't put my child at risk. And FYI my friend openly admits she is sure it played a part. So no I'm not judging her.

I'm just someone that would do anything to not put my child at risk in anyway.

Each to their own

LurcioAgain · 16/12/2015 16:30

I had the occasional small glass of wine or half pint during second and third (very occasional - most of the time it didn't taste nice). I am a research scientist who does a lot of statistical analysis as part of my day job and have yet to see any reputable peer reviewed literature which suggests that drinking at this level poses a risk. I think most of the scare-mongering (and that's exactly what it is IMO - Natty's post is a prime example of this in action) is driven by the women-as-precious-vessels/incubators-on-legs school of thought. The NHS advice is predicated (I believe) on an attitude to women which has underlying it a belief that "The dozy cows are too stupid to know the difference between a small glass of wine once a week with a meal and binge drinking Friday through Sunday". It's part of a culture which infantalises women and doesn't believe them capable of making sensible risk assessments.

Suzietwo · 16/12/2015 16:36

i have drunk after the first trimester in three pregnancies and am just starting to have the odd glass now, as i emerge from first tri with my 4th. i tend to have a glass every other week or so for a month but by the end of the pregnancy i am perfectly comfortable having a glass twice a week. sometimes even....a large glass. Shock

NattyNatural · 16/12/2015 16:37

americanpregnancy.org/is-it-safe/wine-during-pregnancy/

That's all.

SerenityReynolds · 16/12/2015 16:37

I had 2-3 glasses of bubbly fizz for birthdays etc over the course of the pregnancy. I rarely drink at home anyway, and generally I can take it or leave it. I did down quite a few draft beers at a gig before I found out I was pregnant though Blush

sparechange · 16/12/2015 16:38

but if you ask a doctor they would strongly advise against it.

My obstetrician, one of the leading in the UK, based at a hospital that is a designated centre for high risk pregnancies, asked me at my booking in appointment for my second pregnancy (after a stillbirth) asked me if I drank alcohol.
I said no, he replied 'don't let it stop you having a glass of bubbles on Christmas day if you want one'
And reader, I will.
