I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Hi sorry have been a bit quiet recently, have in real life too! Although sickness has improved lots the last week (am 22 weeks on Monday) I've been struggling with the emotional side of it more than ever. Nothing like constant nausea and exhaustion to make you feel like a shell of yourself. Came to stay with my mum for a few days and so had help with DS and extra support so am feeling a bit stronger, but dreading going back as can't remember what it's like to feel well and be a good parent. Hopefully having more sick free days will put me on the right track. I have just declined taking on a job at the moment so will hopefully not have to do too much work until next year to recoup.

Hello to IseeIt and welcome, and to all the lovely regulars, sorry to see you're all still suffering. waves weakly

MadrigalElectromotive · 21/11/2015 21:38

Hello my sick kit contains sick bags (I bought mine on Amazon and they have an absorbent pad in them which makes life easier when you don't have immediate access to a bin), baby wipes, water to sip afterwards, and boiled sweets to take the acid taste away.

MadrigalElectromotive · 21/11/2015 21:40

Mop I feel your pain on the ondansetron constipation front. No advice apart from I found putting my feet on a stool and leaning forwards seems to ease the pressure on my bum when I'm going and makes the pain and injury a bit less severe. Don't know about rennies I'm afraid!

MadrigalElectromotive · 21/11/2015 21:41

Shoop sorry you're struggling. The emotional impact is appalling. Thanks

Sorry for multiple posts everyone, an on iPad and can't read back easily.

eallison88 · 21/11/2015 22:37

hello a mouthwash is useful in a sick kit (might take you a while to find one you can cope with). It's good for taking taste away and also good as you're not meant to brush your teeth fir 15 mins post hurl (acid softens enamel on your teeth, si brushing would damage). If minty mouthwashes make you have try some children's fruity ones (same goes for toothpaste). I found the smell of my mouthwash almost worked as an anti emetic sometimes! Don't be afraid to ask GP for different if what youre one stops working.

MoP poor you with the constipation. Are you managing much fruit? I'm sure that the fact I ate so much tined peaches (pretty much the mainstay of my diet) helped me not to suffer too badly with that particular side effect. Another thing worth trying is breathing out as you push - try not to hold your breath as it tenses you up which won't help. Deep breaths in and the slowly blow out thru your nose - almost feel like you're breathing down thru your body. Sounds daft but really helped me!

shoop glad you've been able to have a bit of a break with family helping you. You're over half way - well done you!!!

Reebok · 22/11/2015 08:02

Welcome hello. Sorry to hear you're suffering. I have some lovely sick bags the school nurse has given me with padding at the bottom. It helps with my train vomits on my commute home from work. Also agree with mouthwash and wipes.

Mop sorry to hear the constipation is so bad. You have my sympathy. Unfortunately it hasn't improved for me at 17 weeks and I'm still having to use suppositories/enemas. Suppose it's the ondansetron and fact we can't drink enough.

Shoop the emotional side of hg awful. Sending you hugs.

Here's hoping we all have a good day. Xx

amysmummy12345 · 22/11/2015 09:03

Morning all, welcome hello Smile
11 weeks today, still suffering, had the worst day in ages yesterday, can't wait to get the scan done next week and tell people more for the fact that I won't have to hide away anymore... I feel like a recluse as I know people would guess if they spent time around me... I went to my nephew and niece in law last night and when we got back NIL text and asked if I was pregnant ConfusedConfused DH is adamant he doesn't wanted extended family knowing until after the scan so I had to fib and laugh it off Blush what a Wally I will look next week when we tell them Blush hope everyone has a good day, just raring myself up to get out of bed and do my obligatory first morning vom ConfusedSad xxx

spandau1980 · 22/11/2015 10:10

Hi all
Thought I'd try some cereal this am as been living on toast ... what a mistake
It's sitting there threatening to reappear
I feel so rotten...
I think iv plateaued at the moment. .. not worse not better very frustrating

As for the ondanstron constipation if you are severely bunged up a teaspoon of dulcolax is ok (on advise of doc) not for regular use.
I hated it made me ill er than the sickness so I couldn't cope with the tablets ... x

iamdivergent · 22/11/2015 10:23

Hi all, it's my birthday today!

I've been doing a bit better the last few days, sick free since Friday. Appetite has increased too which is amazing and I feel I have a bit more energy. I am actually finding that if I just sit about then I am worse, so trying to take a walk especially after dinner which is my worst time - I always feel really ill after dinner which is horrible and it continues up until I go to bed. So still feeling nausea just not (fx) being sick for now and I wish the watery mouth would do one as it just makes things worse. I've adjusted my metoclopramide down to the two doses (as prescribed) a day and I'm alot less dizzy and tired so I think I'll try and maintain at this level unless it gets really bad again.

Been waking in the night so thirsty, so taken to taking a glass of water to bed with me every night to quench my thirst. I also seem to have acquired insomnia! I saw most of 1, 2 & 3am this morning.

CharlieHamer1985 · 22/11/2015 10:25

Hi All, sounds like everyone is having a hard few days. Yesterday was horrid. Felt tired all day and still trying to get rid of the end of the viral infection that ive had for 11 days now. Constant feeling of nausea and acidic tummy. Despite taking rennies and ranitidine. Ondansetron is defo helping me keep food down more as gag more than actually be sick. Not struggled with constipation much. Ive tried eating cereal bars and when i have dinners i try to bulk them out with veg. I have had pain in a tooth for 2 days now and paracetmol is doing nothing. I miss being able to take nurofen.Trying not to count the days til may. Just feel like ive been sick for the longest time.

Gingerlady123 · 22/11/2015 11:09

Hi all. Not been on for a while.
Welcome to any newcomers.
Icant- You sound so brave. I admire your courage. I couldnt do it I would just crumble. I hope they get you feeling better soon. How are you now?
Spandau- Sorry this weekend has been really tough for you. I dont know what to recommend as at 23 weeks I still feel terrible :(. But I am hoping for better days for you soon. And everyone else. Sorry to everyone having a tough time.

quick update from here. 23+1 weeks now. Been having some good moments and some awful moments. weaned my self on phenergan as im managing to stay hydrated on my own. I managed at least a litre more commonly 1.5 litre a day. Last night I woke at 3am to the most horrific vomiting. some dinner came up which im surprised about as i had ate seven hours prior. Only vomited three times this week but the nausea is still rough. OH gone out to get some orange juice and im eating Jam on toast now

amysmummy12345 · 22/11/2015 11:16

Happy birthday iam hope you have a great day!! WB ginger hope you manage to feel better today xxx

TwoDrifters · 22/11/2015 11:51

Morning all! And welcome to new sufferers (though sorry you have found yourselves here!)

Well I'm 34 weeks tomorrow. And still having the unexpected session of projectile vomiting with no warning every now and then. Still on the cyclizine, every time I try to self-wean, the sickness comes back with a vengeance so really why bother!

Hope everyone manages it through the weekend ok. The things we do for our children, even before they're tangibly here!

Flowers for everyone!

iamdivergent · 22/11/2015 12:03

helloelo I am on metoclopramide too. I take one around 6:30 am and another at 2:30 pm every day. I can eat approx 30 mins after morning pill.

I've been on them for 13 days, I believe you can be on them for no longer than 12wks though the instructions say 5 days. They've made such a big difference to me, enabled me to eat and drink again!

spandau1980 · 22/11/2015 13:12

Dunno what s happened today but threw up my breakfast and after cooking a meal for everyone finished the.last mouthful a d threw that all down the toilet too :(

MotherofPearl · 22/11/2015 13:27

Hello All. Thanks for advice and sympathy about the constipation. I'm going to give Ealli's breathing techniques a go. I can't eat fruit at all, or salad (shudder), but can manage cooked veg of all kinds, so I try to get as much of that in as I can.
Happy birthday Iam! Hope you manage to enjoy your day, in spite of HG miseries.
Shoop, sorry you're struggling with the emotional side of things. It's so tough. I know it seems like you'll never feel normal again, but we all will. That is a certainty, even if it seems ages away.
Charlie, it's hard keeping a pregnancy secret with HG, that's for sure! At least not too much longer until you can tell people.
Sorry you're still struggling with the nausea Ginger. I know the feeling. I'm only sick every 2-3 days, but the nausea feels relentless.
TwoDrifters, I think you are next up for the Pink Castle?! Yay! Stick with the cyclizine if it's helping.
I'm going to try to help DD bake a cake this pm. Wish me luck!

MotherofPearl · 22/11/2015 13:30

Sorry, cross-posted with Spandau. You poor thing, what a miserable two days! I really wish you could start to feel some improvement, you really do deserve a break. X

spandau1980 · 22/11/2015 13:38

We all deserve a break MOP could punch someone I feel.so angry about HG
Dunno whether to take one ondanstron a day as others seem to feel loads better on it ... just the constipation makes me nervous

Oh I dunno

Had a guts full ... in fact my gut ain't full that's the problem

Too old n wore out to have another baby ... wish I could sleep til may ...

X

MotherofPearl · 22/11/2015 14:38

It's difficult isn't it Spandau. When my cold has cleared up I was thinking of cutting down my Ondansetron dose to get some relief from the constipation. But just like you're nervous about getting constipation, I'm nervous about going back to lots of voms. God, is it really too much to ask for: normal bowels & no voms?! You'd have thought modern medicine might have come up with a solution by now...

CharlieHamer1985 · 22/11/2015 14:41

The ppl that are ondanstron what dose are you currently taking? Im on 1 4mg tablet a day. Doctor said only take 2 a day of you really have to. So know matter how bad ive been i take only 1. I take it before bed because i find they make me drowsy for at least 2hrs after taking them and couldnt afford to drift of to sleep as have my LO who is now confidentally crawling. I tried 2 days without tablets 2 weeks ago and it was awful. Whilst it doesnt totally cure it defo helps me to function.

Ems10000 · 22/11/2015 16:03

MoP can you stomach apple juice? That might helped with the constipation..

spandau1980 · 22/11/2015 16:43

I was given 8mg x3 a day ! But took 4mg x3 then tried one 4mg a day but still bunged me up majorly x
Didnt think I'd need anything now... thought I'd be smugly eating again and drinking my watee .. but.no! Babu is so active today .. Makes me feel more sick though ..lol

Just had some cheese on toast and tummy feeling iffy

Fgs -any one else eat n literally chuck back up within secs /couple mins? ?

Midwife app tomoz.. so I can tell her no I don't feel better sob

squeezed · 22/11/2015 18:39

Hi all. So the weekend and therefore the capacity for afternoon naps is over. Really struggling with dizziness still even though the vomiting is reducing. The thought of another week at work is exhausting

MotherofPearl · 22/11/2015 18:58

Charlie, I'm on 3 X 4mg a day and have been since my 2nd hospitalisation in week 6. I'm 16 weeks today and apart from grinding nausea, am loads better. Once I've got on top of this cold and so only have one thing to deal with, I'm going to cut down to twice a day. If I relapse I can always up it again.
Ems, haven't tried apple juice but willing to give almost anything a go, thanks for the suggestion.
Squeezed, it's exhausting isn't it. I do find afternoon naps an essential.
At the end of the week I'm going back to normal hours. Probably won't make a huge difference to my routine, as thankfully will still do most days at home.

LucindaE · 22/11/2015 19:01

HelloeloWelcome. With that weight loss, I'm sure you qualify as an Hyyperemesis veteran. I'm sure you know all about kesostix as you've had a miserable pregnnancy before. It seems they are only reliable in showing the early stages of dehydration, though; hopefully, as you say you can retain liquids, that will not happen. It doesn't sound to me as if the meds are working too well - it's worth going back and asking for other meds. Re; a sick kit, I suppose that's anything that makes you feel more comfortable about venturing out; unfortunately as Reebok says, sick bags are high on the list, and tissues, I suppose, and wipes of some sort.
Ican't Poor you. How are things now? Any better at all?
Reebok I hope you don't have too many 'train pukes'. Miserable amongst staring commuters. Surely they would offer you a seat after that?
MotherofPearl That sounds miserable. Never mind about tmi, no such thing on here. No censorship of any sort. I don't know why GP's/consultants don't automatically prescribe laxatives with Ondansetron. Is it lactulose that people say is good? I'm sure the doctor would prescribe it. Are those jelly suppository things not any use? Some brave sufferers on here have even managed to use that awful drink with bits in, what's it called - but I find that nauseating even without Hyperemesis.

amysmummy Sorry to hear about such a foul day, and no wonder MIL guessed.
spandau Poor you. a bad day. I do so hope things do get better soon. Ah, good advice to MoherofPearl about ducolax. Hadn't heard of that one. Can you get it over the counter?
Iam Happy Birthday Flowers I'm glad you are a bit better and I hope you get even more so as a birthday present. Good advice.
Charlie Poor you. A virus for eleven days as well as Hyperemesis.
Much sympathy.
Ginger Welcome back and I'm glad you have had some good days, anyway.
TwoDrifters Sorry to hear about dramatic projectile vomiting bouts.
Ems Waves. Good ideas as ever. How are things now?
I'm not surprised a lot of people on this thread feel fed up. It's very hard to bear.
Apologies to anyone overlooked. (leaves, clucking and flapping)
