I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

As I'm coming up to my qualifying weeks for my maternity pay, does anyone know if it will be effected with me being signed off? I do get full sick pay.

MotherofPearl · 01/12/2015 13:12

Feeling really sick today so thinking I may go back to 3 Ondansetron a day. Feel like I'm constantly fighting the urge to vom.
Squeezed, not too sure about that one, perhaps best off asking HR?
Amys, sorry to hear someone else has fallen prey to the nasty cold plus HG combo. It's horrid.

impatientlywaiting2015 · 01/12/2015 13:49

I have been following this thread a little bit as I have been feeling constantly sick since week 6 (now 15 weeks) but haven't felt right about posting since I mostly dry heave rather than actually be sick so I don't actually have hyperemesis.

I just wanted to say though- Amys I was also told last Tuesday that I am high risk for Down's (1 in 149 risk) and last Friday I had the Panorama test done privately. Harmony, Nifty and Materniti21 are other names for very similar tests. It is a simple blood test where DNA from your baby in your own blood is tested to see whether the extra chromosomes that would indicate Down's, Edward's and Patau's syndromes are present. It is very expensive (£500) although I know King's Hospital and UCLH in London are trialling offering Harmony on the NHS but that is only available to their patients. It also takes a while (up to 2 weeks) to get the results back as the blood is sent off to the USA to be tested. The major advantage is that it is non-invasive so no risk of miscarriage (CVS and amniocentesis have risks of up to 1% depending who does it) however it is not 100% definitive (I.e. You will either get a less than 1 in 10,000 risk of your baby having Down's or a 99% chance of it having Down's but there are far fewer false positive results than with the NHS tests).

For me, as the chance of my baby having Down's was less than the risk of having an amniocentesis it made sense for me to have the Panorama test (and we are very lucky to be able to afford it) however your circumstances may well be different- I just wanted to let you know about it in case you weren't aware of its existence as it wasn't something the NHS midwife mentioned to me as an option.

Just waiting for my results now- it is a very stressful time I know.

impatientlywaiting2015 · 01/12/2015 13:55

Forgot to say as well that there is an Antenatal Tests board on here as well that you might find useful.

amysmummy12345 · 01/12/2015 14:05

Thanks impatient we've discussed it and we've got the CVS test booked for next Monday, we couldn't really afford the private test, but you're right, it's not ash option that was made available to us, we're in the West Midlands so perhaps they've only given us the options available to us on the nhs, will seek out the antenatal tests board now, hope your results come back clear, keep us updated and welcome to the HG board although I'm sure you would rather not venture to this dark side lol 😁 xxx

impatientlywaiting2015 · 01/12/2015 14:16

Glad to hear you have got a date sorted for it Amys and wishing you the very best of luck for it. At least you will know for certain either way. Did they say how long it will take to get the results afterwards? We could be hearing at a similar time.

spandau1980 · 01/12/2015 14:23

Amy -- would you terminate if it was a downs baby?
If not I wouldn't have the test.
The other syndromes babies can have can be diagnosed by ultrasound around 18 weeks.
All my prayers are wishing you good blood results ! Xx

amysmummy12345 · 01/12/2015 15:45

No we wouldn't terminate, but we'd like to be as prepared as possible so the sooner we know the better xxx

iamdivergent · 01/12/2015 18:04

Hi all, OK day had here. New tablets are fine and don't make me feel anything tbh just fairly normal with a little nausea thrown in. I've given in and got some rennies as I'm having really sore indigestion mainly at night which is my bad time anyway.

Hope everyone is having an OK day x

Reebok · 01/12/2015 18:07

Glad you had an ok day iam. Have spent day in bed feeling like death. Trying to force myself to sip lemon and honey although there's a chance I may chuck it up. Have decided not to go in tomorrow either. Had a temp on and off today so may be fighting off an infection. Lucky me eh!

iamdivergent · 01/12/2015 18:37

Aw that sounds like a sucky day reebok I hope you feel better after a good night's sleep and some rest in bed, best not rush back to work!

amysmummy12345 · 01/12/2015 18:43

Rest up reebok health and baby are far more important xxxx

Elliecherry · 01/12/2015 19:41

Hi everyone, I have come to join in :(
I'm 10weeks with number 3, and about to try my 3rd lot of meds, as the other two failed to work. I'm hoping these work as I am finding it hard looking after my other two whilst feeling like this.

I hope you feel better soon reebok

GoldAlmond · 01/12/2015 19:49

Hello ladies hope you don't mind me posting here. I have a question: how long did it take you to get over HG?
My baby is 3months and I still have days when I vomit Sad

iamdivergent · 01/12/2015 19:57

gold mine stopped as soon as I'd had my daughter last time

iamdivergent · 01/12/2015 19:58

Hi ellie what meds are you on?are you in the June 16 thread? I'm 10+6 today x

eallison88 · 01/12/2015 20:27

elliecherry welcome. Sorry you need the board, but glad you've found it. What meds are you on, and what else have you tried?

goldalmond for most of us the vomiting fgoes immediately with giving birth. But I know some women are unlucky enough for it to last a while after, the lovely lucinda being one (I think!). If you're still being sick at 3 months I'd have a chat with your doctor, you dont need that with a 3 month old!

amysmummy12345 · 01/12/2015 20:34

Hi Ellie! Sorry you're here but welcome 😊 hope the new meds work!!

Poor you Almond, I'd definitely get over to see gp, mine wore off at week 17 with dad, and still suffering this this bambino (12+5) xxx

amysmummy12345 · 01/12/2015 20:35

dd not dad, blooming autocorrect 😜

MotherofPearl · 01/12/2015 21:50

Iam, glad to hear your new medication seems to be working OK.
Reebok, sorry you've had such a terrible day. I know it's hideous, but at least colds (unlike HG) are of relatively short duration. Hope you can get some decent rest.
Welcome to Ellie. As others have said, what medication are you on now?
Gold, I've never heard of HG symptoms persisting 3 months after the birth, that sounds horrendous. Even in Lucinda's unfortunate case it only went on for 10 days after the birth. As others have said, sounds like you should get it checked out.
Amys, of course it's still early days and the most likely outcome of your tests is that your baby will be fine. But I was interested in what you said about not terminating, and wanted to say that there was a really positive story on Woman's Hour on R4 this morning about a mother whose baby did have Down's and she chose not to terminate, and what a positive experience it's been for her, how normal and happy her family life is etc. Really uplifting. Anyway I hope you won't be offended that I mention it, I just found it encouraging (I guess partly for my own reasons - I'm 41 so automatically high risk, but opted for no screening or tests on the grounds that I too would not terminate. Not that I judge anyone at all who has or would).
I'm off to bed. Night all.

spandau1980 · 01/12/2015 22:03

Also the further on you are in the pregnancy ie 12 weeks the bigger the fold will show as baby is bigger compared to a 10 or 11 week old pregnancy xx

All those on the HG train good night. ... may tomorrow bring better cheer

GoldAlmond · 01/12/2015 22:18

GP said might be hormonal as I'm still BF. And he ordered test for h.pylori said next step is gastroscopy in case it's a stomach ulcer- I had awful reflux all pregnancy (on top of HG) apparently that can lead to ulcers?

Just feeling so fed-up! Thank god not vomiting every day but 3x week is bad enough. Usually hits me after meals or if I drink too much liquid with food.

Hubby thinks it could be partly stress-related? Baby has bad reflux/colic so cries a lot. When he's screaming in pain I often have to put him in cot so I can run to throw up Sad

kalidasa · 01/12/2015 22:27

I haven't been on these threads for a long time but just wanted to say gold that after DS1 I had problems with persistent nausea and occasional vomiting for a long time, definitely several months. It was v v depressing, I even had to take some antiemetics a few times. The research I did suggested that it is v rare but does happen, usually to women who had v bad HG and who are breastfeeding. For me I think it was definitely linked to breastfeeding, but made worse by stress and tiredness (DS1 was a dreadful sleeper and overall a difficult baby). I was also very depressed which didn't help and it took me about a year to regain confidence with food, so it was also partly psychological I think - that I had just totally lost confidence eating.

I had v severe HG both times though (multiple long hospitalisations, and very disabled by it throughout the pregnancy). Oddly, the HG was actually worse with DS2 (didn't think it was possible!) but I recovered much better. He was a much better sleeper and I didn't get the awful sick dizziness at let down nearly as much (I think because I was less tired/overwhelmed).

So you're not alone! In your shoes I would take reflux meds, consider ditching the breastfeeding, prioritise your sleep and if you think you might be depressed seek some help with that too.

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 02/12/2015 01:52

Just a quick stop, sorry for my rudeness :)
Awful heartburn, nothing's taking it away so drinking loads of milk and strawberry ice cream - my sick is going to be disgusting Confused may have an ondansatron now and see if that works.
DS waking every hour screaming for me so lying down with him until he settles so no sleep for me by the looks of it :(
Catch up tommorrow Flowers

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 02/12/2015 08:34

Ondansatron trick didn't work. Sickness and pain :(
Hope everyone has a better day. :)
