Coleslaw during pregnancy

Hi, I have just found out that I am pregnant- very early stages.
In your experiences is eating coleslaw dangerous for the baby?
I have done the usual internet searches- however would like to hear your views.

Of course in the spirit of fairness to anyone who does think coleslaw is dangerous for a baby.........No......No....it isn't. Just no.

I guess someone could worry about raw egg in mayonnaise etc but really it's not a food to be concerned about OP!

I've just made a massive bowl of homemade coleslaw (with hellman's mayo yum) its carrots, cabbage and onion - what could be the problem??

Surely it's only possibly dodgy if the mayo has raw egg, but that's outdated advice now with the lion mark anyway IMO.

what don't tell me this now. I've been eating it like crazy. a while tub to myself haha

If the coleslaw is mixed with arsenic then I'd avoid it...

It was on the 'foods to avoid during pregnancy' page on the NHS website. I read it after I ate a chicken wrap with coleslaw and panicked!! ??

Only if homemade mayonnaise made with non lion marked eggs is there the slightest issue.

I spent most of my second trimester eating coleslaw for breakfast.

You might want to avoid stuff made from scratch in restaurants and such though as homemade mayo can have raw egg in it.

Restaurants such as tgi, McDonald's, pizza hut, other chain places and prepacked stuff will be made with pasteurized (therefore safe) eggs in all mayo based products. Independent 'posh' Restaurants may make their own mayo, using eggs from unknown or unlion stamped sources so is best avoided, just in case.

Jar mayo, premade coleslaw, home-made mayo with lion stamped eggs, home made coleslaw with jar mayo or lion stamped eggs mayo is totally fine, unless you have some other underlying condition which makes you susceptible to infection etc.

Just to point out this stuff is only on a food list because it may possibly cause food poisoning/ salmonella etc

Your not going to cause huge damage by eating a rare steak with a side of coleslaw.

Just be cautious of where the food came from, so maybe no seafood from a man in a back ally.

I'm slightly worried that some people will eat nothing in pregnancy in case it's dangerous.

OP just saw your update. The double and triple checking is really not good for the old mental health. Pregnancy and child rearing and everything these days is so micromanaged I think people have forgotten to think for themselves and just rely on 'rules' without understanding. The best advice I can give you is to enjoy your pregnancy and think for yourself 'why' is that random rule in place on some obscure Web page so that you can quickly move on without getting anxious and caught up in things.

You would have to be very very unlucky to get listeria from anything, including rare meat and eggs. Just like you would have to be very very unlucky to get hit by a bus.

A few good things to follow (that common sense would have told you anyway) is don't get smashed drunk or play rugby.

Coleslaw is fine. It's mayo made with raw, unpasturised eggs that is potentially, if you are strict, and anxious, something to avoid. So on a rare occasion in a 'nice' place they might have coleslaw made with real mayo.

Just something I read on a previous thread which might put your mind at rest a bit. Any food on the NHS list is because it MAY pose a risk.

If you think about how many times in the past you've eaten food like coleslaw and it's given you food poisoning I'm willing to bet never, same with pate, brie etc.

The risk is tiny so please don't worry

I think that's pretty dreadful if it really is on a NHS page of foods to avoid!

Still, what does the NHS know, their change for life food advice is just awful.

Coleslaw is pretty healthy stuff actually and if you fancy it why not eat it? You might find in weeks to come you can only contemplate eating crisps and bread (or whatever) so enjoy your appetite while you can!

all I thought was its gonna be a long 9months!

I've never seen it on any 'foods to avoid' lists and I have 2 under 2 and read a lot during both pregnancies!

Sorry paperblank but just to clarify pate (liver pate) is off the menu not just because if listeria (which I'd take my chances with) but because of vitamin A.
