Hi, I have just found out that I am pregnant- very early stages.
In your experiences is eating coleslaw dangerous for the baby?
I have done the usual internet searches- however would like to hear your views.
Thank you! Smile

Polly even the vit A toxicity risk is doubted in many medical circles. Its genesis was a report published in 1995 which linked high dosage to birth defects but, a bit like the alcohol question, nobody is willing to risk their neck and quantify quite how high 'high' is!

There are some people who will- perfectly legitimately- say 'why risk it, it's only a few months out of your life, just avoid everything that might pose even the smallest of risks' and there are others who will make their assessment of what level of risk they are willing to live with.

There's no correct way, but it is a real shame that lots of good common sense advice is obscured by strict rules which appear as a result of insurance underwriter back-covering. Coleslaw, ffs Confused

Interesting City. Now I'm bloody annoyed I haven't had pate in my 3 pregnancies! I firmly believe everything in moderation but had actually cut out vit A.

Not preggo rn but having a mooch about the forums!
So would most of you happily eat soft boiled eggs these days? I eat a lot of eggs with runny yolks (poached/boiled) and I was already dreading having to eat hard-boiled only lol, which I felt the NHS site hints at :)

I have seen it on a list of foods to avoid, unfortunately cannot remember where? may have been aptamil website? (aptaclub) I have eaten coleslaw and soft boiled eggs, as many PP have said, the chances of food poising are low so don't panic yourself too much, enjoy your pregnancy Smile

zeetea I don't know about anyone else but I had a soft boiled egg nearly every day of my second pregnancy, it was one of the only things I could keep down.

DinoSnores · 20/11/2015 17:50

zeetea, I've been very happy eating soft boiled eggs during all of my pregnancies, particularly in light of this:

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/health/11214685/Its-safe-to-eat-runny-eggs-pregnant-women-told.html

The headline is a bit misleading, but the article explains that a review of the advice is ongoing. Anyone seen the results of that?

zeetea · 20/11/2015 18:17

Ahh thanks lovelies, don't know what I'd do without my daily eggs lol Grin

Junosmum · 20/11/2015 18:44

Yeah, I eat soft boiled eggs, and raw cake mix so long as I know where the eggs have come from (e.g. they are fresh and lion stamped). I wouldn't eat one in a restaurant for example.

I won't eat things with high levels of vit A. I know vit A toxicity is rare, but it is deadly and can cause skin and eye problems in adults, let alone the unborn so I prefer to avoid it.

On the whole I take the advice with a pinch of salt - I check the reasoning behind the decision and then make the choice for myself based on my own understanding and knowledge and research.
