Peanuts - will you be eating them during pregnancy

The big peanut question. I forgot to ask my midwife on the peanut debate. I know they have recently decided that peanuts are fine to eat in pregnancy now. Will you be eating them during pregnancy?

How did they suddenly go from they are bad to they are ok?

They've been fine for the past 4 years at least (since I've had dc1). I guess they've just done more research.

spanisharmada · 29/09/2015 14:41

Have eaten peanuts through all my pregnancies, I'm not sure why you wouldn't tbh, unless you have an allergy yourself of course.

Nicky333 · 29/09/2015 14:42

They're fine unless you have a peanut allergy. In which case, you wouldn't be eating them anyway, pregnant or not Wink

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 29/09/2015 14:43

I hope so - I have given up drinking, smoking, brie, decent painkillers. There was no way I was giving up chocolate with peanuts in it, and hasn't caused any issue as far as I'm aware.

sparechange · 29/09/2015 14:46

I don't think they 'suddenly' went from being bad to good.
There was a noticeable increase in the amount of children being diagnosed with peanut allergies, and a theory was put forward that it might be connected with eating peanuts during pregnancy.
This lead to the official advice in some countries being to avoid eating peanuts.

It would have been obvious quite quickly if that was having a impact on the number of children diagnosed with peanut allergies, and other research would have been going on into the link.

When it was found there was no link between eating peanuts during pregnancy, and developing an allergy, the advice was overturned. It isn't a 'debate' as such - no evidence has been found...

Peanuts have always been fine afaik, with the exception of when there is asthma in the family. By eating peanuts in pregnancy you are supposed to be exacerbating the chance of your child having asthma too. I don't know if they've revised this advice.
Aside from the asthma thing I would personally never avoid them as imo having no exposure to a potential allergen is going to make it far more likely that the baby reacts when coming into contact. Not sure there's any evidence to back this up, but it's something that seems logical to me.

Sighing · 29/09/2015 14:53

Looks up from peanut butter on toast Grin. Oh yes.

dementedpixie · 29/09/2015 15:01

The guidance changed in 2009 and it is ok to ear peanuts as long as you yourself aren't allergic to them.

Kickedinthetits · 29/09/2015 15:09

There isn't a debate. There wasn't a 'sudden' decision. Just evidence-based advice.

Belmo · 29/09/2015 15:17

I won't be - my dd1 has a serious peanut allergy so none in the house.

Anecdotal, I know, but I ate a lot of peanut butter when I was pregnant with her, and breastfeeding, it was one of the only things I fancied. Can't prove it but I'm convinced that has something to do with her allergy, and there is no way I'd ever eat a peanut when pregnant again.

KatyN · 29/09/2015 15:54

Does it not matter if the father of the child has a peanut allergy too?? I thought they were off the table if either of you had an allergy?

Fortunately neither of us do and I've eaten about half a tub of nutella in the last 2 days.

sepa · 29/09/2015 15:59

My friend who had a baby 2yrs ago was told they were a no no. No allergies/asthma etc.
No asthma here so I will have them if I fancy them! Thanks :)

Nope - but only because I'm allergic to them lol ;)

NotAFuckingChance · 29/09/2015 16:07

I ate peanuts all the way through. I stopped smoking and eating pate, didn't drink anyway, but ate brie, rare steak, seafood etc.

Radiatorvalves · 29/09/2015 16:07

I ate peanuts...not an xcessive amount when pg, and all is fine with DCs. Healthy with no allergies.

No advice to avoid in those days of yore.

Umbrelladilemma · 29/09/2015 16:33

Don't listen to (well-meaning) friends - there are so many old wives tales around about what you "can't" eat!

You can check the NHS website which gives the definitive advise and shows that there is actually very little you need to avoid.

Umbrelladilemma · 29/09/2015 16:33

NHS advice not advise!

Junosmum · 29/09/2015 17:04

Yep, I'm eating them. Had peanut butter sandwiches and packs of peanuts. Not excessive amounts but some.

WtfWasThis · 29/09/2015 17:04

Belmo - me too. I ate peanut butter on toast nearly every day for breakfast when pregnant and it looks as though 15 mo DS has a peanut allergy. I hate this kind of anecdotal post - I'm aware it could be random - but despite being very relaxed about most of the pregnancy rules, I'd definitely avoid peanuts next time.

PacificDogwod · 29/09/2015 17:09

There are whole countries in which ground nuts (peanuts) are a stable food and provide much of the protein that people get and I am not aware of an epidemic of peanut allergies there.
I ate peanuts thoughout all my pregnancies as the rationale behind not allowing them never made much sense to me tbh.

Wtf, I think in your shoes I'd do the same in a subsequent pregnancy. However your experience is as much anecdotal as all of ours.
And AFAIK the evidence is now there that it consumption of peanuts by the pregnant mother does not affect a child's chances of peanut allergy.

PacificDogwod · 29/09/2015 17:14

I cannot find anything scholarly that is not behind a paywall Hmm, but the published evidence did change a few years ago ?2012.

dementedpixie · 29/09/2015 17:33

It changed in 2009 as I said previously

PosterEh · 29/09/2015 18:13

I also ate peanut butter everyday (sometimes twice - it's helped my blood sugars) in both pregnancies. My DC do NOT have any allergies.
I also have asthma and so far no sign of that either but I was diagnosed at primary school so there is still time.

Conline · 29/09/2015 18:22

Eating peanuts atm!

Hairballs · 29/09/2015 18:40

A pack of dry roasted is my daily treat on the train on the way home.
