I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Sorry only now replying feel absolutely rotten today :( wouldn't prescribe me any meds, signed me off until Friday which is something, said im showing keatones and infection so if I'm still unwell tomorrow to self present to a&e! X

Greyhorses · 28/09/2015 16:34

Hi everyone, thought I would check back in today.
I had a great day yesterday, to the point I was convinced something was wrong with baby as my sickness had vanished. I made the most of it and had a takeaway but am really paying for it today- I have vomited until I have only bile left which has burnt my throat.

Does anyone else have random days where things seem to lift only for it to come back?

I'm still off work but am due back tomorrow Sad

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 28/09/2015 16:38

Aw no spandau hope your 2yo will be ok, such a worry when they are poorly x

Reebok · 28/09/2015 16:49

Ginger, I had metoclopramide in my first hg pregnancy on top of cylcizine but I made me feel worse. Hopefully it works better for you.

Mop, glad you're feeling a little better today. Hopefully some better days ahead for you.

Spandau, sorry you're feeling so rough. I will continue to push the hospital until you go! Apparently weeks 8-10 are meant to be when hormones peak so should be worse at some point there. I agree it is worse during these weeks. It's where I'm at now. Feel like I'm dying a slow death. Hope your lo feels better soon!

Icant, I'm sorry that your gp is such an arse! Clearly has no idea about hg! Get yourself to a hospital. Exaggerate how sick you are being if you have to so they take you seriously and put you on meds. Once they have prescribed something, your doc will have to continue prescribing it. I found my gp refused to give me ondansetron (it's a very strong chemo drug used to treat hg but expensive so gps don't like to give it out)....anyway once the hospital prescribed it, my gp has had to continue to prescribing it. Unfortunately he only gives a weeks worth so I have to go back weekly.

Grey, how many weeks are you? I remember in hg pregnancy 1, I had days when I felt a bit better...I think from 11 weeks. I would have one good day followed by 2-3 bad ones. My hg lifted by 16 weeks that time so I'm hoping I will start to have better days from now on and it lifts early again. Please try not to worry...I know it's hard.

Eali, any news?? Waves to meerka, em, Lucinda and everyone else.

Greyhorses · 28/09/2015 16:58

Thanks reebok I am only 7+4.
I have had two weeks vomiting hourly and then this random vomit free day, hence why I worried! Sickness is definatley back though.

We have booked an early scan for the 3rd of October so hopefully that will stop the worry for a little while!

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 28/09/2015 17:06

I shall do that reebok! He asked me was this baby the same father (knowing exdh had left me after the last child!) I said no obviously , he said 'ah there we are then that's why you've got HG as you've had two different sperm donors?!'

Ems10000 · 28/09/2015 17:37

icant that's awful, he deserves a good slap! Managed some sleep but got a 5am wake up call from dd! No posts from ealli today, hope she is enjoy some toast in the pink castle!

Heavenscent86 · 28/09/2015 17:51

Hi everyone. I am feeling a little brighter these days and being sick much less often. Sorry I don't want to rub it in. But I'm now getting really hungry so I absolutely have to eat but at the same time I'm terrified of eating after the last few weeks. I sit there eating a meal and thinking all the way through it how awful it will be if it comes back and yet I'm so hungry (probably after weeks of eating nothing) that I just have to eat. Is it normal to feel so frightened to eat?
I'm sorry to hear people are still suffering so badly and I do hope there is some light at the end of the tunnel for everybody soon. A few better days even if it doesn't lift completely.

LucindaE · 28/09/2015 17:52

Gingerlady123 Welcome. I see you've had lots of good advice. I hope the meds help, don't hesitate to go back if you are still really ill.
MotherofPearl It is so confusing about ketones. I find it hard to understand the complexities too, unfortunately, chemistry not my favourite subject, but I gather that ketones can indicate dehydration at some point but only for so long, and then they indicate long term starvation. There's that medical rule of thumb which is probably equally useful; if a pregnant woman hasn't been able to retain water for more than two days its a medical emergency. Maybe Meerkacan cast more light on it. I remember Melleebacca discussed it a thread or two back. Hope you are feeling a bit better today?
ICant I'm so glad your doctor is taking it more seriously. Unfortunately, by the sound of things, it looks as if it is A and E for you tommorow.Do keep us informed. Do try ice lollies, if possible, and ice cubes meanwhile. Do you have any flat coke in to sip? Work is impossible for most sufferers for at least a few weeks. What's an 'SN' school?
Greyhorses I'm glad you had a good day. They are often a sign that the turnaround will be coming. Often they increase. They do worry people a bit, though.
EMS Great advice as ever.
bugista Happy news about scan. I remember the disgusting phlegm, and also, I still get it with sickness with migraines.
BarmeeMarmee You poor thing; that is so horrible, that Coming Out Both Ends phenomena. Also, uses up so much liquid.
thisisnow That is a nice post.
Apologies if I've rudely ignored anyone; I'm in the middle of updating Windows. Hate, hate, hate IT.

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 28/09/2015 18:00

Ems hope you get more sleep tonight.
heaven hope the no sickness lasts for you! I can totally understand the anxieties that would come with not eating after what you've been through.
lucinda I'll try the flat coke and ice cubes, coke worked in the mornings but not anymore, as with ice lollies but seem to make nausea worse now. SN school is a special needs school :)

Reebok · 28/09/2015 18:19

Aww ems I know the feeling. lol somehow know to wake up earlier when you're at your worst. Hope you get more rest tonight.

Heaven, that's great news! So pleased for you. I think it is normal to feel scared to eat after being sick so long....I felt that way once hg lifted with dd and was always afraid to vomit again. Of course I did vomit again thanks to reflux but it didn't feel anywhere near as bad. Can I ask how many weeks are you and when did you start to feel better?

I have an extra scan next Monday...I joined a study for women who have mc and they give extra scans and appointments...they are saying I'm 10 weeks next week...I'm still going with my old dates as it makes me feel better! Haha!

Heavenscent86 · 28/09/2015 18:42

Hi reebok. I'm actually only 13 weeks so amazed I feel a bit better. I'm still getting sick probably 6 or 7 times a week but it seems to be concentrated to the odd day at the moment with good days in between. I still feel very queasy on those days and sometimes have dry heaving sessions but on the whole I feel so much better. It's lovely to feel like I can eat something, occasionally on a good day I manage a proper meal but usually it's still snacking. I think it's only been over the last week that I've started to feel brighter so I'm a little scared it's going to kick back in again with a vengeance at some point but trying to make the most of it while it lasts and maybe even regain some of the 10lb I lost if I'm lucky. How are you feeling now reebok? Are you still very poorly? I remember you were really suffering when I last popped on the thread.

Reebok · 28/09/2015 18:47

There is hope for the rest of us! Glad you're able to eat a bit more. I still feel like crap! Had an awful weekend of bawling, vomiting, retching and generally feeling like I was going to die. There seems to be no safe food anymore. My scan has put me back a week which is frustrating. I hate this! I want my body back!

Heavenscent86 · 28/09/2015 19:16

Awww. I really hope it lifts a bit soon for you. Its such a nasty thing to go through. I pretty much lived on potato. Still do to be honest. Any variation of potato suits me at the moment.

Reebok · 28/09/2015 19:53

Thanks heaven. My throat and chest are literally on fire. Had a fight with oh which resulted in me crying hysterically and then vomiting. I feel awful and in so much pain. The ice lollies aren't helping to take away the pain tonight.

Melleebacca · 28/09/2015 20:31

Hi All (can't remember who wanted info about Ketones) - anyways - ketones are mostly for starvation, but are also an indicator for dehydration. Although if you've been dehydrated for awhile, you won't have ketones present in your urine that can be picked up by ketostix. Prolonged dehydration/starvation causes the ketones to change form and that is undetectable by ketostix. On my first admission to A&E, the key to showing I was dehydrated was my rapid heart rate. I would recommend if feeling awful, dark urine, racing heart etc, to go to A&E regardless. In NZ they have to check you over, and I was always given a bag of fluids whether I had ketones or not.

Metachlorpromide - I was prescribed this at 2 X tablets 3 X a day, initially. It only worked for 4 days for me before I started vomitting it up. I was prescribed ondansetron to take additionally, but ended up dropping the metachlorpromide, because it made me feel really anxious. Then I was on ondansetron the whole way through. Now at 36w (eek!) and almost completely weaned off ondansetron but I still feel nauseous in mornings and evenings, but not bad enough that I can't handle. No vomitting since 26w.

Hope that helps and so sorry to not individually address everyone! Fingers crossed for a sound night for all. Flowers

shoopshoopsong · 28/09/2015 20:32

mop I didn't know that about ketones, very interesting. All I know is I got told off when I was in hospital for measuring them and was bemused. I think that was cos they think women will panic if they're slightly high and constantly check?? I don't know really.

icant I am disgusted by your doctor PLEASE see someone else, and if and when you have the energy I think a complaint is in order. If there's not another GP at your surgery you can see an out of hours doctor (usually at your local hospital)

reebok I am so sorry you are still struggling so much both physically and emotionally. I feel I can say here that I have struggled with it emotionally probably more than physically (which is saying something)! & that's even with support. Have you contacted the pregnancy support phone number on the charity's website? They can pair you with one on one support via phone if you think that might be useful too. Also in my area (South Essex) there is a pre and post natal service called Baby Blues which offers support to either people with a mental health history or that are struggling. It's a really rare service unfortunately that not all districts have but might be worth looking into if yours does? I haven't been offered it yet in this pregnancy but did in the last and it was good. I hope your scan tomorrow can give you more hope.

Meerka · 28/09/2015 20:56

spandau metoclopramide is good for some people, not for others. Well worth trying, but if you get very restless legs or twitchy, stop it until you've spoken to the doctor (doesn't happen for many people).

icant agreed that doctor is 1) deeply ignorant and 2) an complete pillock.

reebok ringing the Preg Sickness SUpport line for a support lady is a brilliant idea, please do do it. It's helped so many people.

grey, good and bad days are completely normal, just don't overdo it on a good day becuase it'll make the bad days worse.

Thinking of you all tonight and wishing you a restorative sleep.

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 28/09/2015 21:38

I will do shoop & meerka , the more I think about it the more I get annoyed Angry
He even put HG on my sick note so to not prescribe meds is a dick move.

eallison88 · 29/09/2015 05:18

Hi all. Will catch up properly and post any advice/support I can. But just wanted to let you know that I'm lying wide awake watching my beautiful little boy sleep. 18 hours of labour and a transfer from home to birth suite later and I've eaten the best toast and drunk the best tea I've ever had. Was very dehydrated as contractions brought on vomiting so couldn't keep any food/drink down.got to hospital, numerous drips later and baby arrived. Sickness now completly gone and spd pretty much gone to - put pants and pjs on without having to sit down!

Keep fighting ladies, it's not a lie that it stops with baby!!!

ICantThinkOfAUsernameH · 29/09/2015 05:44

Aww congratulations eallison !!
