I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Ah Reebok, your GP sounds lovely. As you say, makes such a difference to feel heard and understood. Glad it's helped you.
Yes, I'm contemplating some of the dreaded suppositories. ..

LisaHerts · 22/09/2015 20:57

I'm new to Mumsnet & just want to say how supported I feel seeing that others face the same struggle!! So far I've very much felt like the odd woman out (and so weak & feeble when others make comparison). I'm 22/23 weeks & my GP prescribed Cyclizine Hydrochloride tablets - these seem to reduce the frequency of the sickness (if I manage to keep them in). However they make me heavy headed / sleepy so can't take them if working/driving. Symptoms preferable of course to constant vomitting! Hopefully this will help some of you!

spandau1980 · 22/09/2015 21:13

Had a guts full
Sick 5 times today and twice mini attacks wet myself twice
Still on cyclizine
Gonna pop an ondanstron tomorrow ..
I look like utter crap
My hair freaks me out and makes me puke lose hairs the worst I have long hair and it's my pride n joy but now I despise it.
OH ain't happy about pregnancy and keeps saying how will we manage ect
Not helping my mood
My stomach kills my head hurts I look like I was just dug up
Have no friends to talk too as they won't understand
One close friend is trying to conceive still (no kids) and she d have a pop of I said I can't cope as she thinks I can just pop out kids :(
Sorry on a low

LisaHerts · 22/09/2015 21:29

Oh no good luck - it WILL stop (just get through one hour at a time) x

Meerka · 22/09/2015 21:31

Freshbread I am so very sorry. Was hoping against hope for you. Thinking of you and your whole family at this time.

-----

lisahearts welcome. Cyclizine is good but there are other meds. Can you ask your doctor for prochlorperazine instead?
this is a short rundown of possible meds:

cyclizine (old fashioned anti-histamine; can make you sleepy)
Metoclopramide (empties the stomach faster, less to upchuck)
Domperidone (similar)
Prochlorperazine (stemetil/Avomine/Buccastem) (works on your sense of balance; also a travel remedy; can be good for some people).
Promethazine (called Phenergan)(stronger old fashioned anti-histamine, also sleepy-making)
Ondansetron (the strongest and many people find the best, but causes constipation).

spandau ... keep going. You -will- get through. HG is a total shit disease and most people don't have the first clue about it.

When the baby is here it -will- be worth it.

eallison88 · 22/09/2015 22:18

spandau please take the ondansetron. It's the only thing touched my sickness. Severely dehydrated mum is far worse for baby. Many women on here have used it and had perfectly healthy babies. One pharmacist tried the "you're not meant to take it if you're pregnant" speech on me. I calmly told her that I was taking it cos I was pregnant, had been prescribed by a specialist and quite frankly me dying of dehydration and starvation would be far worse for my baby. And if she didn't hurry up and dispense the prescription I would almost certainly vomit in the pharmacy, so could she hurry up so I could get back to the peace of my own house to vomit unjudged by others. It helped that is recently been on a drip and rehydrated!

bugista · 22/09/2015 22:42

Woo ealli wish someone had recorded your speech to the silly pharmacist that's awesome!

I've not posted for a while as things has started to get better, I was only throwing up every other morning - until today when I couldn't keep anything down at all except a nectarine. I hate this horrible condition, I swear it's cruel on purpose! I'm now 13.5 weeks.

Fresh I'm so very sorry to read about what happened, that's heartbreaking. I hope you have the support of your family and please do post on here if it helps, we are all here for you!

To everyone else suffering (reebok, spandau, ealli, MoP, lisaherts and everyone else I've missed) we will get through this!! This place is a lifeline xx

Ems10000 · 22/09/2015 23:27

fresh I'm so sorry to hear your sad news, how heartbreaking- I hope you have a lot of support.

Reebok · 23/09/2015 03:01

I tried a suppository but it didn't work properly. I don't think I kept it in long enough before I tried to go. I'm in bits right now from the pain. Have piles too on top of all this. It kills!! Going to try another suppository in morning when dh goes to work so I have the bathroom to myself. Cannot sleep from pain in my butt! Sorry...tmi

Melleebacca · 23/09/2015 07:11

Reebok - I understand your pain! My GP prescribed Lactulose. I would take a tablespoon when I needed it (and I was home alone), and within about an hour it got things moving.

Fresh - I am so sorry to hear your news. You have been in my thoughts all day. My heart goes out to you and your family at this time.

Ealli - you've gotten so far! The light is almost there. I asked my midwife at my last appt when they would induce me for being overdue, and that's the date I'm counting down to now. If baby comes before then I will be pleasantly surprised, but I seriously doubt it.

Lisa - welcome to the thread.

Hope everyone is coping ok! I've found I can now go 2 days without an ondansetron (whoop whoop), but the whole vomitting in labour is now starting to worry me. I just can't wait till I get to the pink castle where I can eat whatever I want and keep it down!

eallison88 · 23/09/2015 07:18

mellee we really don't want to be induced. It's almost become an obsession for me - so much completely necessary intervention in pregnancy that I want to have an intervention free labour (as much as is possible). Unfortunately the downside of that is not having a clue when things will get going and potentially having to wait another 10 days. It's my niece's birthday tomorrow , so part of me wants to avoid that. Equally, another part of me wants it to act as a catalyst for baby!!

bugista I'm so glad things are starting to settle for you :)

shoopshoopsong · 23/09/2015 07:18

Hi all - still on drip and still high ketones. Thinking of everyone Flowers

Meerka · 23/09/2015 07:45

ealli what a wonderful speech to the pharmacist! wish that could be circulated to all HCP's. About induction .. if it does come to that, it's not the end of the world. The live, happy (or rather surprised) baby wriggling on your tummy is what matters, not really how she or he got there, honest.

bugista very pleased to hear you're starting to feel better. Good days and bad ... those hormones do like their rollercoaster ride of misery.

shoop glad you're getting the rehydration. Hopefully you're feeling slightly better now?

ems and mellee how are you today?

Reebok thinking of you. Each half-day is another day forward ... do get to the doc, had that constipation once and it was extraordinarily painful (mind you I was also getting an infection at the time). is a home enema an option?

sorry to everyone I've missed. Wishing everyone a quiet and survivable day

LucindaE · 23/09/2015 10:04

ShoopI am so sorry I missed your post about being admitted. I do hope you feel a bit better soon.
LisaHerts Welcome. You are very brave, still to be working. I hope you get a lot of relief soon apart from the cyclizine. Great advice from Meerka as ever.
Chopsface told me that the woman in her hospital knitted 'This Too Must Pass' as a co-incidence; a piece of synchronicity...
Reebok You poor thing, how awful that is. Never worry about tmi on here.Lactulose, that is the name of the laxative I keep forgetting, thanks Mellebacca for excellent advice.
spandau It is very awful, and even worse if OH gets overwhelmed. Things will almost certainly get a lot, lot better. re; hair, I knew a woman who had it who went round with a bun for the duration, but long hair is a pain to wash in such circumstances. I'm sure you don't look as bad as you feel.
EMS I must put up the due dates thing for anyone who wishes to participate; you must be near the top, now?
bugista I hope that was just a glitch.
eallison That was a wonderful speech Grin. Threats about imminent vomiting should be used more often: 'Don't annoy me, Sir?Madam, or your shoes may suffer the consequences...'
MotherofPearl I'm so glad it wasn't two admissions, and I must have misread it. Hope you are feeling just slightly better today.
I hope everyone is coping. Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

Flowers

Reebok · 23/09/2015 11:25

Thank you all. The suppositories didn't work and I can't take lactaluse as I vomit it up. Ended up getting dh to get an enema. I have never been in so much pain in my life! It felt like labour all over again. The enema was easy to administer but so painful once it kicks in. And it didn't work completely as poop was so hard like rocks and literally stuck. So although I'm not proud of this, I had to erm...manually extract some with Vaseline. Feel a lot better now aside from the fact I have piles. Sorry this post has been tmi! Wondering if I should just stop the ondansetron.

spandau1980 · 23/09/2015 12:56

Is the meds helping you at all?
Would you be better in hospital so they can re start your system lol so to speak
Rehydrate you settle the vomiting settle the severe constipation?
Very severe constipation can be dangerous so don't think it a.minor thing
I'm anxious you get some professional help as your poor body is really suffering and mentally this must be awful for you xx big hug

LucindaE · 23/09/2015 12:59

Never worry about tmi, Reebok; the enema and the 'manual extraction' sounded like best thing to do, though I suppose if you do the latter often, might lead to piles, but as things were, you'd hardly care. I know Kalidasa in hospital was suffering from 'impacted bowel' or some such term and they had a job treating it in hospital.
sapndau They do say you aren't meant to take them in pregnancy, though I know they use them in maternity wards; it's always a problem. That reminds me of something daft I saw years ago which might raise a smile. I used to use the 'sponge' as birth control, and the packet said 'not to be used in prregnancy'! Wink

Ah, and I meant to say, Reebok I second spandau's excellent advice, dismal though it is to go in. But I suppose childcare remains a big problem to you're reluctant?

OP posts:
spandau1980 · 23/09/2015 13:07

Also fybogel .. buy in chemist had in pregnancy last time perfectly safe
Like drinking orange with bits in... but realky think you need a starting point ... hospital !
Can't family have your little one or hubby ll have to take time off wk?
Don't wanna get to point were you are collapsed or in need of severe hospital treatment ... not trying to scare you .. your a tough cookie but I do think you need a hand xxx

Meerka · 23/09/2015 15:27

Reebok a few of us have had to resort to that. Oh the delightful indignities of HG and meds :/

Would like to third Spandau's and Lucinda's advice .. .

Reebok · 23/09/2015 17:12

Thanks for caring ladies. I think I feel better now thanks to the enema. Feeling much clearer. Just nasty piles to deal with but I promise if it gets too bad I will go to the hospital. I decided to stop ondansetron for the day (only took the am one) which has also helped but I've been feeling/being really sick since so not too sure if I should carry on taking it tomorrow or see if doc can find an alternative. All I know is I do not want to ever feel that blocked up again.

Sorry not replied to individual posts. Hope everyone is well.

LucindaE · 23/09/2015 17:24

Selishly I feel like sobbing when I see the list, as I'm almost certainly at the bottom of it. My current estimated due date is 12 May Sad but I guess that will be refined at 12 week scan. I notice that Ealli has been quiet today, so maybe things are on the move. Hope so!
Reebok, the enema and manual extraction sound traumatic, not to mention the piles. I'm concerned that I'm heading in the same direction. Still no urge to go at all. I think maybe be cautious about stopping the Ondan though. The sickness and dehydration aren't good either. Argh, why does it have to be like this? Why can't we all have easy pregnancies?!

Reebok · 23/09/2015 17:42

My due date is 23rd April although little unsure of dates are right. Sorry to hear that Mop. Have you tried a suppository? Currently laying in bed in tears snapping at dh because I feel so unwell right now and he's annoying me as was talking about food to dd. I just feel so frustrated. Can't win! I hate this.
