I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Exciting eali! Not long to go now. You give the rest of us hope.

Thanks for the suggestions Mop. Trying digestives today which help a bit and lemonade but the problem is now it's completely aggravated my heartburn and reflux. Takes away the nausea for a bit though.

Shoop, I get a pain too when I need to vomit. Could it be the same?

Lilac thank you for coming on and encouraging us all. Hope to get to where you are soon. Pity about the lack of appetite but I'm sure it will come back.

Waves to all.

eallison88 · 17/09/2015 17:16

Don't give up hope! The end seems so far away, but it's really not. You do a day at a time and you will be fine. I've said it before, but a Catholic thinker once said 'all shall be well, all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well". Whether you have a faith or not and whatever you may think of the Church (Catholic or otherwise) I think these words are brilliant. And were my mantra for weeks!

It gets better!

Ems10000 · 17/09/2015 19:14

So exciting ealli and lovely to hear from lilac. My food suggestions are digestive biscuits, scotch pancakes and English breakfast muffins. I went through a lot of bags of hard boiled mints to keep the nausea at bay and found they helped excess saliva too. I also sipped isotonic sports drinks on my worst days, at my doctors suggestion. Wishing everyone a peaceful night, another day almost complete!

Reebok · 17/09/2015 19:28

Been vomiting up my day. I vomited so hard while crying that I peed myself again which resulted in more hysterical crying. Why me? Two of my sisters escaped hyperemesis! Why didn't I?? And why was I stupid enough to think this time would be different and u would be hg free?

LucindaE · 17/09/2015 19:29

LilacRain
What a lovely message of hope to everyone. I loved sniffing my LO's head, I so know what you mean about that nice scent. A week already...
eallison This is exciting; they didn't even allow home births for first babies when I was pregnant...yes, the scent of the fabled Pink Castle is totally delicious. Ah, that one you quote is a fine mantra; (from Julian of Norwich(am I right?) I remember 'Grumblingagain' on one of these threads asked for a mantra, and I called to mind, 'This Too Shall Pass' as an appropriate mantra thought up by some wise man (I suppose there are some, lol) for both the best and the worst of times.
MotherofPearl Those baths sound just the thing, as you can stand lavender. That diet is certainly spartan, oh dear.
spandau A good idea about a kids brush, with small head; a lot of people find kids' strawberry toothpaste more bearable than adult ones, too. Or those weird homeopathic ones...
Reebok You poor thing, that cocktail not working; at least you know they've tried; it's so maddening when they won't try all options; there are steroids, but I think they are a last resort sort of thing; they didn't even try those on Kalidasa who was more ill than anyone I've known on the thread and in hospital for weeks.
Meerka Ha, Ha, about the punishment for Barmee's insensitive boss.
Barmee I am not up on the latest sick pay law,but it seems amazing if they can deduct it for a pregnancy related illness...
shoop It is very hard at its worst; things will get better. Things will almost certainly get much better.
Waves to TwoDrifters and thisisnow and everyone. Twodrifters was it you who said that people were reluctant to offer a seat on the tube? How disgusting.

My dh bought an ice lolly pack so has been able to make me ice lollies which helps

MotherofPearl · 17/09/2015 20:04

Lovely to hear from Lilac, and thanks for those words Ealli. My day has got progressively worse, and so your words really came at the right moment.
Have been sick so many times this afternoon, nothing is staying down. I'm so thirsty but anything I drink just comes back up. Just read to DD and my tongue kept sticking to the roof of my mouth. Oh Reebok, I do sympathise, it's so hard.
Lucinda, I remember Grumbling from the 2011 thread. And poor Kalidasa too, she was in a truly wretched state.

shoopshoopsong · 17/09/2015 20:54

MOP I find baths a brief comfort, too.
Reebok yeah the pain could be that, it's like a dull ache rather than sharp pains so hoping it's just that. Oh and I pee (and fart) when vomming too. It's so delightful.

Just tried to sing DS a lullaby through the sticky just-been-sick throat it was disgusting and I think he went to sleep quickly just to shut me up. I miss playing with him, spending time with DH and I miss myself. I am very glad I found this thread and you women are inspirational and its comforting that others out there do 'get it'.

spandau1980 · 17/09/2015 20:59

Hi all

Does any one else keep shivering??
Reebok reebok reebok I sooooooooo get were you are coming from
It's bloody degrading and awful but your building a baby ... a beautiful baby ...
I keep myself strong by thinking of names what I want to buy
Get a fetal dopler !!! When you feel.low and can't do another min listen to the heart beat it's the one thing that saved me with dd pregnancy cos I was begging for it to end ...
This too shall pass

One day you ll look back at this and laugh.... hysterically in a padded cell like ;) but laugh you will

Massive hugs xxxxxxx

eallison88 · 17/09/2015 21:54

Julian of Norwich indeed, lucinda. Who, in actual fact, was a women. So still not that many sensible men!

eallison88 · 17/09/2015 21:55

Vomiting crying and peeing... I dare say we've all been there on thus thread. Minute by minute if you need to reebok

TwoDrifters · 18/09/2015 00:06

LilacRain that was such a nice encouraging post to read - thank you! And I hope your appetite returns soon x

MotherofPearl · 18/09/2015 06:58

Does anyone know what the max dose for ondansetron is please? I'm on 3 x 4mg per day but really struggling to keep anything down.

Meerka · 18/09/2015 09:31

ealli lovely to hear about the home birth planning :)

thisisnow the relentlessness of it is down-making. it -will- get better though.

reebok ... gentlest of long-distance hugs.

lilac so lovely to hear that your little bundle is a full week old ... amazing how your life utterly changes isn't it! I mean ... no longer sick, no longer heaving yourself around like a pained whale, and instead you get cuteness on tap :) It does take a while to get over the scars of HG yes, but give it time and it will happen.

MoP i believe that max dose is 3 x 8mg ondansetron a day but do speak to your doctor or a pharmacist first ... doctor is better as the pharmacist has to cover their arse.

Keep enduring ... it's one day closer to the end ....

Skiptonlass · 18/09/2015 09:45

lilac congratulations!

I too worry that I'm developing a bit of a mild aversion to food :( I've always been a very healthy, active, hearty eater and I find this worrying. I can feel I'm hungry but I'm having to force food into myself, even on days when I'm not so bad. For those of you who've experienced this, did it last long after the birth?

I'm also finding in these last few weeks that the nausea is roaring back... Still only a few weeks to go!

reebok I've been there... Vomiting so hard I peed. It's truly one of the low points isn't it? I found myself irrationally cursing the fact the sink wasn't close enough to the loo to allow this to happen with minimal cleanup... :/

Meerka · 18/09/2015 09:57

skipton it took me a while for my system to get back to normal, but that's quite rare I think. Most people snap back into their former selves - no sickness, no upchucking, food tasting normal.

Melleebacca · 18/09/2015 10:12

MoP - I was prescribed 3 X 8mg Ondansetron a day, and 3 X metachlorpromide a day at my worse, but do double check with your GP

LucindaE · 18/09/2015 10:17

Awful conjunctivitis today, eveyrone - blurring my vision; so I'll just type a brief message. MotehrofPearl would you believe Kaliddasa went on to have another? She was in hospital for weeks agiain. All went well, but the doctor told her she mustn't go for a third because the Hyperemesis was unusually severe.
freshbread What a lovely thoughtful DH to buy an ice lolly pack.
I hope eveyrone is OK. This blurring is so annoying.

OP posts:
MotherofPearl · 18/09/2015 11:11

Thanks all for the advice about Ondan. Will see how I go but if no improvement will go back to EPU and ask for dosage to be adjusted. I think I need to take one of those drugs that moves things through your system quickly alongside it. At present I seem to keep things down for an hour or two, and then up they come. I'm worried about how little nutrition I must be retaining (and it's not like I'm eating very nutritious food).
Lucinda, sorry to hear about conjunctivitis: so uncomfortable. Hope it clears soon. That Kalidasa was very brave to have a second. Also the worst case I've ever heard of on the thread.
Skipton and others worried about snapping back after the birth. I went back to normal straight away after the birth of DS. I did have a very bad vom (of what my DP described as 'battery acid') on the post-labour recovery ward, but I think that was a reaction to some of the pain killers. After that I felt totally back to normal and relished food and drink again

Skiptonlass · 18/09/2015 11:50

Thanks meerka and mother of pearl - let's hope I'm ravenously hungry after the birth! I'm just worried that I'm developing some sort of psychological link between eating and feeling terrible. I wouldn't class it as severe as a food phobia but it's something along those lines. Well we will see anyway :)

chopsface · 18/09/2015 16:49

Hi everyone, sorry I just vanished off the thread but my sickness has gone now so I felt like a fraud hanging around. I still think of you ladies though and I hope you're all doing as well as you can in the circumstances.

Someone had knitted this 'scarf' for the barrier at the hospital I work at and I thought I'd post it here as I know it's your motto. Best wishes x x

Freshbreadandfaith · 18/09/2015 19:48

Thankyou chops face that is true it has come to pass. As I read that I'm sucking on an ice lolly fighting the waves of nausea, evening is my worst time, some mentioned shivering, I get cold and shivers in the evening especially after being sick, *sigh. Hugs to all x

Meerka · 18/09/2015 20:07

Oh chops what a lovely idea of someone's! Thoughtful of you to post it here, it's great :)

Lovley to hear that the N + V has passed for you so completely, wishing you all the best for the next months. Do pop in when you have the mind to, and let us know how Babychop is when they make their appearance =)

Reebok · 18/09/2015 20:24

Thanks everyone. Lucinda hope you feel better soon. Flowers

Having a rough day. Not keeping much down except ice lollies and digestives. Hate the taste of lollies..much rather eat plain ice but my Ice tray is broken. Been reading through the old thread I was on when pregnant with dd and it seems that this was my worst part...9 weeks pregnant.

Earlier I was trying to get over to the sofa to dd and she was so sweet...encouraging me with every step I took...took me ages and she kept saying things like: 'good girl mama...come dd...come me...that it. Good girl.' When I finally got there she gave me a big kiss and rubbed my back with love. She only turned two last month. I don't understand how she's understood sickness so quickly.

Chops thank you for sharing that and glad you have gotten better. Can I ask...when did you start to feel better? How many weeks?

Waves weakly to everyone else. This too shall pass...

chopsface · 18/09/2015 20:32

Glad you liked the photo :-)

Reebok I started to feel better maybe 22 or 23 weeks? During the day I'm absolutely fine and can work and eat and drink normally! I do get nausea still on an evening and especially if I'm very tired. Today I very nearly vommed my dinber dinner! I ate it all up and then got really watery mouth and ran upstairs. Somehow I held the feeling back and wasn't sick. Feel very tired and I'm curled up in bed still feeling bleurch. But come morning I'll feel normal again. Currently 27+4

Congratulations to lilac :-)
