How did you tell your DC about your pregnancy?

I'm only 10 weeks. We are planning to tell 4yo DS after the 12 week scan. Ideally I would wait until as late as possible but I'm fucking fat huge already and people will guess soon; I want DS to find out from us rather than someone else.

How did you tell your DC that they were going to be a big brother / sister? Is there a 'right' way to explain that a new baby is on the way?

I took my boy to Harrods as it was Christmas time and got Santa to do it I was 20 weeks

We told ds (9) when I was about 9 weeks. I was so ill with HG that the wee thing was worried about me so we wanted to put his mind at rest. His daddy told him that mummy was having a baby and he looked over at me and said "are u really mummy?". Them gave me a big cuddle. It wad very emotional xxx

From personal experience, I would suggest waiting until you get bloods back etc. My scan was fine but my bloods shot me into high risk and I was so glad DH and I could deal with the amniocentesis etc without the girls knowing. It was all fine. He's one now.

Sorry, meant to say that didn't find out about bloods until a fortnight after the scan.

Ds1 is 4 (and ds2 is 2 but he doesn't care!) and we bought a few books - house inside my mummy and another lift the flap one which guesses all sorts of funny things in the mummies tummy before a baby and read them together for a few days before telling him that around the time Santa came this year, that there'd be another baby coming too and it was in mummy's tummy now but getting bigger until it'd be ready to meet him

He asked if the baby would bring him a present like Santa would! And now asks how many weeks to go, he knows it's coming around week 40 and so every week (now 15) he counts how many more to go

libraries Thank you, that is good advice. As I said I would ideally like to wait but my ever growing tum just won't allow that. We will deal with the consequences if we need to.

ohholyfuck That's cute. I've heard good things about the house in mummy book. Will be buying a copy! Also like the reference to Santa. This baby is due in January so might use the Santa timescale thing.

I explained to dd she's going to be a big sister like my friends dd who she really looks up to. When we found out it was twins I then had to explain that part too which was confusing for her! She's 4 now and keeps asking when her sisters will be born

I understand that.But it may be worth checking. My bloods were slow. If you could expect an answer in a couple of days it is probably worth waiting.

We waited until i was about 20 weeks and results from,harmony blood tests back. Dd1 was 7.

i made up a bag with pressies - a set,of tiny socks, a big with "wee sister" on it. She,opened them,and,was,puzzled but when she saw,scan photo - she grinned, hugged us and burst into tears. Every year since she was 3 she has asked Santa for a sibling and this time he granted her wish.

My ds age 6 guessed, he was jumping on the sofa when I was about 10 weeks pregnant, jumped off ran over to me and patted my tummy saying "mummy your fat, you only get fat when your having another baby" thanks! We still waited till after the scan though.

We brought the scan pic home for the boys and told them that the doc took a picture of inside mummy's tummy and did they want to see what he saw? The 8yr old was really excited, the 10yr old said ' oh my god not a baby!'

Watch out once you've told him - we took ours to 12 week scan and stupidly hoped that she wouldn't really take it in but found out that 4 year olds gossip a lot. I wanted to keep it quiet until 20 weeks (owing to previous problems) but she outed me everywhere and to everyone. Annoying but cute.

resipsa Yeah...we won't be taking him to the scan. No way. We will tell him when we know everything is fine (apart from bloods as per earlier posts). And I would never expect him to keep that secret.

We took ours to the 20 week scan (along with my best friend so she could see and entertain them when they got bored so we could focus on the scan). DD was a bit too young to appreciate it with DS, but with DD2 she was 5. We got her to guess when she saw the screen: "mummy, a re e you having a baby?"

We told DD (5) after the 12 week scan and Harmony results that we had some good news and she was going to be a big sister. Thought she'd be really excited as last year she was constantly asking for a baby sister, but she just said "I'm glad it's not a boy!" and has hardly mentioned it since...

My kids guessed both times - in fact with DC3 it was nearly 5 yo Dc1 asking if I had a baby in my tummy that prompted me to do a test, and I let DC1 and 2 (nearly 5 and nearly 3 at the time) be the ones to tell people, which confused everyone nicely :o

My dd is 4 1/2, we told her after our 12 week scan, she has been asking about having a brother or a sister so I asked her would she like one to come and live in our house which she did, I explained it takes a long time and I have to grow one in my belly.
I'm 26 weeks now and she's very excited, she gives my bump a hug and a kiss now and then and has started drawing pictures of me with the baby on my belly. She also tells everybody wherever we are

I told dd (just turned 5) at 12 weeks(ish). (I'm almost 33weeks now)
I explained she would be a big sister, like one of her best friends at school. My biggest problem was that she wanted a sister, and she's getting a brother!! But, after explaining how cool brothers can be, (and her little best friend also has a little brother), and that the age gap will mean they wouldn't really be into the same toys/games etc at the same times so it didn't matter that it's a boy. (Plus, before I found out the gender, I promised she wouldn't have to help change nappies if it was a boy, but would if it was a girl. Apparently, that was a good deal!!)
I have also explained that I won't love dd any less, (just like her loving the baby wouldn't make her love me any less) but that she'll have someone else that will love her.

At about 14 weeks - wish my dh could have recorded it because he told our 5 year old dd on the way home from school. She was very excited and the next morning, during school assembly, she stood up and shouted "my mummy has a baby in her tummy) - again something I wish couldve been recorded. At the 20 week scan we found out we were having a boy and told the rest of friends/family that didn't know via video on facebook.

My 7 year old keeps mentioning 'your baby' and saying 'you look pregnant'. Today she found me a heart shaped leaf and a teeny one for 'the baby'. I am perplexed. She hasn't been told and I'm barely pregnant. With previous miscarriage (no trust in scans or bloods) and such low odds I am very reluctant to tell anyone. It's getting alward

Ds is just 6 and has been asking for a baby brother or sister for ages. We waited til after the 12 week scan and wrapped up a 'im the big brother' t shirt with the scan and gave it to him. He opened it and slowly read it, and said im not a big brother....than he saw the scan and he screeched and ran to me and cuddled me :)
