Thank God for women...

Just got off a delayed, packed and over-heated commuter train. Packed when I got on but immediately 2 women offered me their seats whereas the overweight young man taking up 2 seats unnecessarily just looked up then down again. Of course, being 35 weeks pregnant and a bit, well, hot, I turned down the offers and made him move. So glad there are women in the world who get it!

I think you're generalising a bit there. Sorry you had a bad experience but there are plenty of decent blokes out there as well as women who will offer to give up their seats.

Why is the guy who didn't offer you his seat's weight relevant?

Funny, I've been doing a little study whilst pregnant and in a good few months of commuting on four separate journeys per day I have been offered a seat by other women just three times.

I think it's a little rude making someone stand, he may have needed the seat as much as you and you had other people willing to offer you a seat. Pleased you didn't have to stand though, it's a horrible day for commuting.

Hold on, unless I've read it wrong, she said he was taking up two seats. No-one is entitled to two seats, she is perfectly in her rights to get him to move over so she can sit next to him rather than allow someone else to stand up.

Was the guy in one of the priority seats? But in any case if two ppl (women or men is irrelevant) offer their seats is because they can afford to in terms of comfort and health. Maybe the overweight guy could not.

I think the point was that he was taking up two seats, rather than the op expecting him to give it up ahead of the two women.

Seat hogging is definitely not restricted to men and I still don't get what his weight has to do with anything.

By seat hogging I mean using one for your bag etc when it is busy.

I think the heat is getting to everyone on this thread... If he was taking up two seats then he should move. At 36 weeks with my first child I have found that a lot of people just choose to ignore pregnant women and are pretty rude to be fair in regards to giving up seats etc IME.

But op didn't say she made him move over she said she made him move! That could mean anything if the op was clearer people wouldn't be jumping to conclusions

Oh heck - it was meant to be light hearted. That'll teach me! I didn't make him stand, I just asked for one of the two seats he was sitting in. Not so awful. Entitled? No, just wanted a seat. If that's entitled (such a ridiculous Mumsnet word that real people don't use), we're all in trouble. I usually like a seat when I'm not pregnant too but I guess some of you would let AN Other have 2 seats and ride on the roof for fear of seeming entitled!

Oh for God's sake; I didn't 'point it out'. I'm not rude. I just asked for the middle seat. The train was rammed and he should have left it available so he didn't need to be asked. People, really, this is the pregnancy board, remember. I'm off and God forbid anyone comes on here tonight looking for light relief.

Totally fine to ask any person to move if they are using two seats. I couldn't work out how men verses women came into it, and generalising that only women would give up a seat for a pregnant lady wasn't really fair on half the population (that's how your op reads).

Anyway, glad you got a seat and hope you're not melting too much in this hot weather.

I am a women and would have offered you my seat.

I also would have found it odd if you had refused my offer and decided to round on someone unnecessarily.

I sympathise, but how do you know the 'over weight' man didn't have a medical condition. How was he taking up two seats, with his weight or luggage (sorry if I've missed this).

If women have up their seats I would have thanked them and taken up the offer. There are lots of people who have underlying medical conditions that aren't visible and we can't just assume people are being rude.

I found your post rude and arrogant. As other posters have said weight is irrelevant, but obviously bothered you to have referred to it.
