I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

That post sounded v selfish reading back! She did have a wee at hospital thank goodness and didn't need a drip. The challenge now is to get a 'clear catch' wee from her to find out if uti .....Almost impossible I would say for a two year old! Mil still here thank goodness

Amyyy27 · 03/07/2015 12:34

Mirabal that must be so difficult, you don't sound selfish! Pleased you have you MIL to help out and hope your DD is feeling better soon also x

Meerka · 03/07/2015 13:30

mirabel I hope your little one is better now. How horrible for her :(

kayme · 03/07/2015 20:23

Hi Im back again found the new thread. Mirabal poor you hope your daughter gets better soon, difficult when you feel alful and have things you have to do.
I am due 28th of Jan 10 weeks now. It could be a Christmas baby as my last was 6 weeks early but I will try and keep this one in a bit longer. My first was two weeks late. I think two weeks early would be good.
I thought my hay fever was better must be my meds.
Oh I so hope my sickness stops earlier this time. I have been managing but starting to feel like my family is having to miss out as I can't go out afternoons and evenings as too sick.
Sorry to hear some of you are still really struggling.

Melleebacca · 03/07/2015 20:36

Hi All - the thread is so busy! I'm doing well, think I'm one of the lucky ones. 23+6 today and only a couple small voms all week, despite being back at work.
MrsM - I had 16 full weeks off work, but I work for a chemical company so it's s H&S issue if I'm sick at work. Pretty much need to be capable of getting out super fast if anything goes wrong on site.
Jen - so glad to hear someone was on ondansetron till the end. I have to take it to curb the nausea, but I'm down to one a day and will keep taking that until I'm on mat leave, then might try to wean off.
This must be the biggest collection of women who are excited about Christmas in July. I can't wait. I should have a 2 month old, and be able to eat all the chocolate I could wish for Smile

I was chatting with a cousin yesterday who's best friend is a midwife. She said HG babies are some of the healthiest babies, because they take absolutely everything from the mother. My babe was measuring 5 days ahead at the 20w scan, with an estimated weight of 1lb then! So an upside to the horrific sickness is a very healthy babe!

Melleebacca · 03/07/2015 20:43

Chops - I get terrible period like cramps pretty much daily, since about 8w. I've spoken to midwife and doctor, they both think it's just the stretching of the uterus. But I bring it up regularly anyways. It generally lasts a couple minutes and is very infrequent. Probably doesn't help that baby is sitting so low.
Write it on a note to go in your pregnancy file so you remember to bring it up next time.

TwoDrifters · 03/07/2015 20:55

LucindaE - for some reason, even though even a glass of water would have me vomiting during the daytime, I seem to be able to manage an evening meal after about 19:30 even if it's just a bowl of soup. So I've never felt it got bad enough that I needed to ask about medicine. Maybe that was stupid of me & I could have felt better weeks ago :-( But my GP has bee very good about signing me off work, at least.

I am taking homeopathic remedies but somewhat sceptical about their efficacy - still, if they work I'll be over the moon!

Anyway, the good news is that despite having a hideous day yesterday, today has been better. I understand from a friend that it works this way, & that gradually the good days will get more & more frequent. Here's hoping!

I'm glad you all seem to be coping with the weather, even if it's a struggle.

kayme · 03/07/2015 21:24

One plus point with the weather is I have been wearing dresses I cant stand anything around my tummy.

Mirabal · 03/07/2015 21:40

Aw nice to think our babies will be healthy despite our suffering. Thanks for all best wishes for dd. Today was slightly better but started the other end (sorry). I owe my mil a big gift or two.

I did a little wee being sick half an hour ago. A grim milestone. Thoughts turning again to ondansetron.

Sorry for all those suffering x

chopsface · 03/07/2015 22:23

Glad your daughter is feeling better mirabel must have been a worrying time taking her to hospital.

Wrote a great long post but MN ate it Angry

Can't remember anything else apart from what I was saying to MrsM as it's responses from the previous page and it's a pain to go back and forth on my phone. So Mrs I'm taking promethazine, twice a day. Once at bedtime the other at midday. This was by trial and error. GP told me to take one at bedtime when it was prescribed but the effects were only lasting until mid afternoon the next day and I was vomming all eve. I found out I could take 2 a day so discovered that if I took one at lunch time it would cover me until bedtime when I took the other dose. I have had zero sickness and only bouts of nausea and tiredness towards when a dose is due. I hope you find something that works for you :-)

Oh I also wrote some waffle about thalidomide and why it took do long to put 2+2 together as the defects only occured if a mum took it in a small timeframe, like weeks 9-12. If a mum took it in weeks 6-8 only or something there was no defects. It's all on Wiki anyway if you're interested.

Laura7010 · 03/07/2015 22:56

melleebacca my oh told me off for getting excited about Christmas only this evening! He said something like 'Christmas is high up on your agenda considering it's the 3rd July' lol!
It's really busy on here today, just been trying to catch up. I hope everyone has been ok today. I was pleased as I managed a couple of hours at the year 11 prom tonight. My lovely form all grown up in their Sunday best :)

elizabethsmum · 04/07/2015 09:36

not had chance to fully catch up on very busy thread but do hope everyone is surviving. thunderstorms are a welcome break in the weather at least. Hope the journey was ok mygreeneyed. Hope your daughter is ok mirabel. DH has caught Dd2's tummy bug today - have just said to him actually imagine this for weeks on end and then you have an idea of what hg is like- his answer is that he is never getting pregnant! !Grin
have just noticed that the vertigon tablets that I take for worsening migraine nausea (am convinced there is some sort of genetic disposition to hormone related sickness/nausea) are promethezine based - never noticed before!

Meerka · 04/07/2015 09:48

About upchucking and the, um, effect on the bladder ... if you crouch when you are upchucking and rest your crotch on the back of your ankle or your heel, the pressure prevents any inadvertent leakage.

LucindaE · 04/07/2015 11:33

Mirabel Poor you and poor little dd. Sixteen times sounds awful. That must have been worrying.
kayme Oh dear, I hope you didn't get lost?
MelleebaccaGlad you seem to have turned the corner, although many with ms would say two vomits a week is bad enough.
Mrrabel Oh dear, the Peeing While Puking indicates violent retching...A good idea to try for Ondansetron with GP.
I'd forgotten that great hint from Meerka.
Mrsm14 Goodness, these med combinations are so complex.
Amyy17 I so agree about rice. My silly head supplied the rhyme, 'Not nice.' [green]
Laura Nice about prom. everyone Lol about looking forward to Christmas.
Added Confused and mygreeneyedboy to dates list.

TwoDrifters Ah, I see - the food at dinner time must have helped keep those pesky ketones down, I suppose? It's interesting you are on alternative remedies; I was in the same situation in a way, the gp refused all meds, I suffered some days, staggered to an Acupunturists in a state as I'd heard it had helped someone else and had given up with gp, the acupuncturist treated me in his lunch hour, urging me to report to A and E if I still couldn't retain water by that evening, but it worked and I never did have to go down the path of A and E-fluids-meds finally prescribed that was the normal pattern in those days. But I was very lucky; Acupuncture doesn't usually help so dramatically. I was give some funny little pills too, presumably homeopathic, but never could remember what they were called.
Lilac How are things?
goldenrose I used to suck old fashioned barley sugar to get rid of that disgusting metallic taste.
Melleebacca Your friend is so right, as long as you avoid getting too dehydrated for too long, Hyperemesis babies thrive. It's the poor mothers who suffer.
Waves to elizabethsmum.
mrsm14I so empathize about anxiety about date and mc If you want me to take off the date, just pm me. I so understand that nagging fear. I had an mc myself and it spoils everything by making you nervous for the first tri.

Peeing and puking go hand in hand I'm afraid. I sit on the loo to puke into a small basin I keep for it. It's terrible!

Lucinda, my edd is 3rd August ... One month to go.

Amyyy27 · 04/07/2015 15:24

Can I ask how far on you ladies were when you started peeing when puking? I'm 21+3 and starting to worry it could happen any day! I want to prepare with pads as I am often sick at work and i work quite far from home so don't want any accidents!

chopsface · 04/07/2015 16:34

two be careful taking homeopathic remedies, I'm sure I read that they weren't safe/tried&tested to use in pregnancy Confused

Amy how is your pelvic floor, you might be alright! Grin

TwoDrifters · 04/07/2015 18:23

chopsface - I did do research before taking them & they're fine, though I purposely took nothing in the first trimester, just to be safe. But to be honest, I have now stopped taking them, as I don't think they were helping anyway :-(

eallison88 · 04/07/2015 18:37

I've peed whilst puking pretty much from the off. I think it just depends on tge violence of your heaving. If you're past the worst of the vomming/heaving you might have missed that joy. As I've said before tho, there's little so bonding as sitting on the bathroom floor, hubby sitting behind you, stroking your bath, flushing the loo and proffering mouthwash (aquafresh my big teeth mouthwash developed antiemetic qualities) and then you pee on you both... We were at a wedding a few weeks ago and shared a wry look at "in sickness and in health"!!!

LucindaE · 04/07/2015 20:30

eallison Your husband sounds angelic Smile. I was pee-ing from the first, and no excuse of pelvic floor damage. As you say, the violence of the retching seems to set it off. To give you all a laugh; I got to the point of whipping off my knickers as I raced for the loo; lucky I wasn't at a workplace...
Another hot day. I hope everyone is coping in it.
On cooling down, before aspirin was invented, there was a tried and tested way temporarily to reduce a fever, where the person was sponged down in tepid water; it seems it had to be tepid or the body would soon react to the coolness and raise the temperature again.

Amyyy27 · 04/07/2015 20:36

Oh eallison bless you! I've been super lucky so far then as I do some phenomenal heaving at times! It feels more like all my guts are going to come out the back end (sorry!) But I do tend to have a wee before the vomiting starts on a morning so that will help.

mygreeneyedboy · 04/07/2015 20:54

Just caught up on everyone's messages. Hope you are all doing okay!

I haven't thrown up in two days! Yesterday I felt crap, but managed to perk up a bit for the flight. Someone else fainted on the flight but not me!! And it was reassuring to know that there were two doctors sitting behind me Smile . Today I have tried to ignore feeling ill, I have eaten my way through it. I think I've eaten every hour. Only small amounts, so I get hungry quickly. But hunger and fullness both bring on the nausea. So it's been pretty successful day I think. Smile I'll try keep this up for the rest of the holiday. (Was pretty gutted I couldn't enjoy the buffet breakfast...)

eallison88 · 04/07/2015 21:05

Now the nausea has settled from its deathly throes, I find the same as you greeneyed, eating too much or not enough sets off the sickness. More the not enough - if I get over hungry then the rat of the day is pretty much a right off. Eating generally leaves me feeling very uncomfortable and too much definitely sets off nausea. It's such a balancing act!

Today I saw my nephew who us as old as I am, almost to the day! I was sat on tgethe or with my knees of, leaning against the sofa. HE and baby had a kick off - he was sat on my knees with his feet on bump. Every time kicked/wriggled, nephew giggled and wriggled his feet back. Not massively comfy but too funny to stop!

amy I discovered early on that rice pudding was one of the more discusting things to bring back. I'd love to try custard but the dairy content puts me off (dairy and pregnant me are not on good terms!)

mellee I'm glad things are starting to settle down for you. Fingers crossed it continues!

mirabel hoping your daughter is still getting better and stronger by the day!
