I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

mrsm I can't imagine how worrying this must be for you. Is there an early pregnancy unit at your local hospital you can ring and arrange a scan today? I had some horrible pains and spotting at 6 weeks and they brought me in for a scan. Sending hugs and support your way

chopsface · 13/07/2015 07:42

Mrsm I can't offer any advice other than trying to get an earlier scan for reassurance. I wish you every bit of luck x x

BarmeeMarmee · 13/07/2015 08:30

MrsM no advice other than what others have said already but sending you hugs.

Mrsm14 · 13/07/2015 09:27

I can't got to epu without GP referral so waiting for a call back this afternoon from them. Will just be duty doctor though, who is sometimes locum so not holding out any hope for a referral. It's all just really worrying and guessing from responses no one else has had a sudden symptom free day or two. I'm just hoping sickness comes back now!

elizabethsmum · 13/07/2015 10:35

mrsm have you rung the Epu to check with them- they may see you earlier as you already have an appointment on thurs anyway so in theory already have referral. x

Mrsm14 · 13/07/2015 11:13

No unfortunately the scan on Thursday is private and they only do Thursdays. Haven't even seen a midwife yet so NHS scan won't be till 13-14 weeks.

LucindaE · 13/07/2015 11:50

Mrsm14 I'm wracking my brains trying to think of something. I'm not sure even if you can check the heartbeat at this stage with one of those doppler things. Is the scanning place connected with a private clinic that might be able to give you any advice at all? I do feel for you; can only offer cyber hugs at this point.

OP posts:
elizabethsmum · 13/07/2015 11:56

unfortunately too early to listen in with Doppler unfortunately lucinda. - if you 'mention' pain or spotting to gp you may get early scan referral mrsm. if you are in the Midlands at all then pm me as I have a friend who runs a private scan business and does reassurance scans x

elizabethsmum · 13/07/2015 11:57

of course it may just be that meds are taking effect xxx

kayme · 13/07/2015 12:14

Mrsm14 sorry to hear you are worried. Have you had any other symptoms? Hopefully it's just a good day for nausea, I've been finding I have been more up and down this pregnancy. It's the hormones that make you feel sick. Understandable if you have had a miscarriage before. I think some people feel sick even after loosing the baby if it's still attached.

kayme · 13/07/2015 12:21

elizabethsmum I agree I had a early scan when I had bad period type pains and spotting.
Mrsm14 Hopefully you will be chucking up later thinking why did I worry. Think we get so used to feeling alful you just don't expect to feel well. I just spent an hour in a preschool with a lady that would not stop talking I felt so sick I just wanted to leave. Was worried I would be sick on her!

RubyReins · 13/07/2015 13:57

Hello.

Thanks for concern! I am at work today as I have a meeting in a bit but really struggling - the loo is two flights of stairs away and I have been there loads today... I have called the GP (took over three hours of calling to get through) but no appointments available in the next fortnight. My surgery is beyond nightmarish but I will just troop up there tomorrow and wait to be seen - that has worked in the past although the particularly grim receptionists don't appreciate it. The doctors are lovely it's the getting to see them that is the issue!

I am sipping tepid water right now (water being banned at desks but it's deserted here and I am beyond caring) but nothing is staying down. I am up in the night being sick too. Vision is ok, skin is desperate and I have a perpetual headache. I know in a way that I should be glad I have such strong symptoms! My midwife last time said "at least you're pregnant" which was frankly bizarre. That was re: GD though and not sickness. That may still rear it's ugly head! I had a bit of sickness with DS but this is something else. I feel like I have had the worst brandy hangover for six weeks now.

Really hoping that I get some help tomorrow as I have so much to do and I can't go on being this ill!

Love to all.

kayme · 13/07/2015 14:57

RubyReins poor you you sound bad how are you managing to work? Make sure you are seen at doctors will they not give you an emergency appointment?you also have the option of A and E. If you can't keep water down your probably really dehydrated. Just going on a drip and having meds makes you feel so much better.(you may have already been). It only takes a few days of being really ill to make you ill enough. Like the others recommend the little sick you wee on that checks your keytones are good to give you an idea of if your body is struggling with lack of food. Not sure if it checks if you are dehydrated.

MotherofPearl · 13/07/2015 15:11

MrsM, that sounds incredibly worrying for you. But as Kayme says, it may just be the hormones fluctuating. I know Meerka has emphasised this in the past, that when the hormones have a surge, that's when you can experience some very bad days, but then your body begins to adjust to that level and you may have a couple of days of feeling better (before the next surge starts). Really hope all is OK.
Ruby, whether you see your GP or end up trying A&E (which I personally found more useful), do make sure you let them know how bad things are for you. It really doesn't sound as if you should be working in your current state. You need to stress to whoever you see that you are unable to function. Hopefully you will get prescribed something that works for you.
Hope everyone else having a reasonable day.

Mrsm14 · 13/07/2015 15:53

Thanks everyone for the support. I have been referred to epu but they can't see me till Wednesday morning. So another 48 hours of worry ahead. Trying to remain positive but it's tough. We're 2 years into this process and this would be our first so it is so desperately wanted. Just have to keep everything crossed it's hanging in there x

BlueberryWafer · 13/07/2015 16:01

Hello all, just popping back to offer support really! My little girl is now 15 weeks old now. Been through 2 HG pregnancies, so you have my every sympathy.

The advice I would give anyone who can't get an appointment with a GP, turn up at A&E if you're not keeping water down. They will check your ketones etc and admit you from there. They can't send you home without a bed, so even if there is no bed in the epu they will send you to the gynae ward or similar. I ended up on the maternity ward twice because there was no beds. It is truly worth it to get the rehydration, and definitely best for your baby! I understand some people may think that is a waste of A&E resources, but if no one is taking you seriously then it can be used as a last resort.

RubyReins · 13/07/2015 16:33

I am not sure how I am managing to work!!! I am not really... Had a tactical spew before meeting (which lasted 2.5 hours...). I am self-employed which makes matters a bit tricky - no work, no cash! Working at home for the rest of the week but need to bring my A game for next week as I have a big case and a lot of people are relying on me. I will see the GP tomorrow or failing that go to A + E. I will get those sticks too.

Thanks - really finding this thread useful x

LucindaE · 13/07/2015 16:37

Mrsm14 With luck as others say it may only be a hormonal fluctuation; I'm so sorry you have to go through this worry. Thinking of you.
RubyReins Oh dear, that sounds nightmarish with the two flights of stairs. With all this vomiting and dry skin and a headache, you are probably dehyrated now. As Blueberrywafer and others say, it's probably best to check in at A and E without waiting to see a GP tomorrow. Or at least, if you don't want to do that, buy some kesostix from Boots or any chemists on the way home and test with them. Sorry to sound bossy.
Blueberry How lovely to hear from you. Can't believe in baby's age already. Great advice.
elizabethsmum Ah, I wondered about that. I want to ask something else; how uncomfortable can you expect a scan to be as Amy was bruised and made quite sore by the probe thing (forgotten what they call it)?
Waves to MotherofPearl Meerka kayme and everyone...

elizabethsmum · 13/07/2015 17:32

mrsm glad you have been able to get a scan slightly sooner although so sorry you are having this worry xx

ruby poor you- really doesn't sound like you should be at work.

blueberry so lovely to hear from you. Thank you for coming back to say hi and encourage everyone on the thread x

lucinda as a sonographer it is sometimes more tricky to scan ladies who have hg as by the very nature of hg obviously it can be very tricky to be sufficiently hydrated let alone manage to have a full bladder, (particularly in recent heat even without hg!)- therefore sometimes baby can be sat in a more difficult position to scan and need a bit more 'encouragement', although it should not be painful it can be a little uncomfortable (I found this myself when being scanned anyway). if struggling with water I would try and sip a bit of lucozade or something fizzy if poss to try and encourage little one to be a bit more active but I fully appreciate that this is not always possible!! I often find myself chatting to patients about how awful hg is while I am scanning and sympathizing! (sometimes pointing them in this direction).

Laura7010 · 13/07/2015 17:43

Hi all, hope today has been a good day?
mrsm I am sorry you are worrying and have a wait to find out on Wednesday. Hopefully it's just a little rest bite and you'll be puking again in no time!

I had my twenty week scan today and we are joining team pink! I had to wait 1 1/2 hours this morning!! There was no chance of a full bladder there I'm afraid :-/

LilacWine7 · 13/07/2015 17:59

Hi everyone and welcome new ladies. Rubyreins sorry you're struggling with work, must be difficult being self-employed if you can't take sick-leave! Do you have anyone you can delegate things to so you can rest more?
MrsM really hope you get good news at the scan.

I had 3 vom-free days... then today I woke in early hours feeling v.nauseous, vomited violently several times and continued to vomit throughout day. Also have bad heartburn and nausea. I agree with the hormone-surge theory, my bad days usually coincide with other hormonal symptoms like increased breast soreness and leaking colostrum.
Also when SPD gets bad the nausea seems to get worse though that could be lack of sleep... unless SPD is influenced by hormones? Last night my hips and lower back were so painful I couldn't sleep which always makes me nauseous next day.

Does anyone worry their baby will get squashed when they sleep? I always sleep on my side but since entering 3rd trimester baby keeps kicking and wriggling on the side I'm trying to sleep on, I'm worried he feels squashed! If I turn onto other side he sometimes calms down, but often starts kicking and wriggling on that side instead! Turning over is really painful with SPD yet I end up switching positions every 5mins or so until he gets 'comfortable'!

2 of baby's uncles-to-be visited over weekend (we relaxed the no-overnight-guests-until-birth rule as I was feeling so much better). It was fun seeing them and I put my feet up for once! Last night when I was up vomiting I heard someone else vomiting on other side of wall (our ensuite backs onto guest-bathroom)... it was baby's uncle who'd had too much whisky!! In between throwing up he was singing, and I ended up getting the giggles despite feeling so ill. Very surreal! Next day we laughed about our vomiting-duet. I'm normally really paranoid about people hearing me throw up, so it's helped me lighten up! Smile

elizabethsmum · 13/07/2015 18:14

congrats laura!! there is a theory that hg symptoms worse with girls due to increased hormones - not sure if it's true but I had girl first and then boy/girl twins- dread to think if hg would have been any worse if both twins were girls!!

kayme · 13/07/2015 19:07

LilacWine7 good your making progress and mostly good. Babies are designed to be squished up, when they come out they still want to be like it. I used to find my boys were always really active my first was two weeks late it got really uncomfortable, he used to stretch out pushing both sides of my stomach I had to told him in. I think they sleep well in the day as your movements rock them to sleep. As soon as you sleep they are awake or it certainly seems that way anyway!
elizabethsmum unfortunately I have two boys so it didn't work for me, would like a girl this time.
RubyReins If I was you like some of the others say I would go in to A and E as soon as you can maybe even tonight that way you will have a few days of feeling so much better, could you do your work in hospital? I know I did just get them to put the canular in your left arm. At least that way you might still make your important deadline.

Laura7010 · 14/07/2015 06:56

I'm a little worried as every time I am sick there is blood in it. I'm not sick that often anymore but I just got caught off guard and threw up bile. In it were a lot of streaks of fresh blood. Do you think I should ring the midwife? Or put it down to torn throat?

eallison88 · 14/07/2015 07:19

From memory, fresh blood is less worrying than unfresh blood...but I'd be speaking to your gp and midwife - gp can prescribe meds etc. You taking gaviscon etc?
