I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Hi everyone. I'm 6 weeks pregnant and have severe nausea, all day. I find its worse after I have a drink, even just a sip of water makes me either gag or vomit. Went to the Dr yesterday who wasn't very sympathetic, didn't test me for dehydration and reluctantly gave me some tablets (promethazine) which I started taking last might but feel worse today?! Have only managed two sips of water today so far and gagged and felt sick for about an hour afterwards each time. Does anyone know how long it should take for these tablets to start working? Last pregnancy I had cyclizine and seem to remember them working quickly, I was on 3 a day though but only 1 a day of the promethazine. Am so thirsty but just cant find anything that works. Thanks

Amyyy27 · 11/07/2015 13:54

Just popping on for 2 moments!

philomena so sorry for your loss x I had a missed miscarriage last year where the baby died at 6-8 weeks but we did not find out until 10-12 weeks. I had bad morning sickness (granted not HG!) That lasted until 2 days before we found out we miscarried. This is because your body still believes it is pregnant and continues to produce the pregnancy hormone, even though sadly the baby has died. What will happen when you have medical management is that you will be given tablets that stop the production of the pregnancy hormone, which in effect starts off labour so you can pass the pregnancy. In stopping the production of the hormone you should find your sickness will stop too, however the tablets they give you can make you very sick and you may be offered an anti-sickness tablet in the hospital. I think I stopped feeling sick the same day but later on after everything had passed. So sorry you are having to go through this its such an awful time. If you have any questions please feel free to send me a message x

kayme unfortunately I have used up all my full paid sick leave, so although I can be signed off sick I would be put on ssp which I just can't afford right now :(

I am sure I did not need a full bladder for the scan. I was told I did not need one for 20w and as this was an extension of that scan I see no reason why it would be any different! I am going to make a complaint when I am next there as I would hate to think she treats all her pregnant ladies like that! After a couple of very quiet days he has gone back to kicking me often so very relieved! My tummy is still sore though it feels bruised without looking it iykwim.

Hope you are all as well as can be ladies and can enjoy your weekend xx

LoveLetters · 11/07/2015 13:57

Now 12 weeks, not vomiting as much but the nausea is constant. I've cried most of today, I just want a break. I just want to eat one big meal and a huge glass of diet coke with out it being a weird texture or puking it up. I'm such a mess today. Can't stop feeling sorry for myself

Meerka · 11/07/2015 14:43

Hi rosie

iin haste: promethazine is like cyclizine but stronger. It can take a bit of time to build up in the system, 2-3 days. It's very good for some people but doesn't help others.

Also im afraid you're coming up to the most difficult time of the pregnancy from the sickness pov so today might be a bad day because of that.

Can you send your partner out to get Ketostix from a chemist today? now? You pee on one and if it comes up deep purple you are dehydrated and need to get medical help today. It should show as reading 3+++ on the stick.

Can you suck ice blocks (maybe crushed into chips) or try very hot or very cold drinks, maybe sipping them through a straw?

do rest as much as you can too. Don't push yourself to do anything at all that isn't essential. Getting to the loo is about the most ambitious you should be atm.

rosielady5 · 11/07/2015 15:03

Thanks for your reply. Will do as you advise and see how I go, good to know it can take 2-3 days to work x

starrynight123 · 11/07/2015 15:08

Hi kayme, meerka and lucinda! Thanks so much for your replies. I’ve started taking iron supplements in case I am anaemic, in the hope that they will help. My periods have been a lot heavier since having my daughter, and I’m tired a lot of the time, so figured it can’t hurt to give the iron a go.

meerka my daughter is fine, thanks for asking! She is now starting to walk and has her first tooth!! Such exciting developments! How is your little one?

Feels so strange to be back on this thread after practically living on it during my pregnancy. It was such a life-line and you guys are the best! Really kept me going, and even though I felt so lonely and miserable throughout my pregnancy, I always knew I could log in here and there would be others who understood. Flowers

TwoDrifters · 11/07/2015 15:11

Hello all!
Well my GP signed me off work for another week and started me on cyclizine. How long do you think the tablets will take to kick in and help?

LucindaE · 11/07/2015 17:00

rosielady5 Welcome, I can't improve on others' advice, I hope those meds start working soon and if not, don't hesitate to ask for something else; and I so agree about getting those kestostix to test for dehydration. Do you find ice lollies, jelly, the juice of tinned fruit or sips of flat coke any good at all?
Loveletters Poor you; I do hope that it starts easing for you soon; most people start to feel an improvement at some point between 14 and 20 weeks. What meds are you on?
rubyreinsYou must be getting dehydrated at this point, do watch out for that by testing with the famous kesostix, but if you're a veteran you don't need me to tell you that. Do you find ice lollies or ice cubes or even flat frozen coke any good? Lol about LO's criticism Grin
BarmeeMarmee It's unnerving to have too good a day; I'm wishing for mild nausea for you tommorow!
Amy Great advice for Cunk, whom I hope is feeling less nauseated.
An mmc is horrible. Goodness, I certainly agree you should complain if you are still bruised.
TwoDrifters From Meerka's advice below and elsewhere, I gather two or three days? I hope they help a lot.
Kayme Sorry to hear about LO; it's distressing you can't do as much for him as you'd like.
StarryNightI've always meant to ask - you wouldn't happen to be a Van Gogh fan (my favourite artist)? Sounds good; does your dr agree to prescribing pre-emtpive meds? Glad you found this thread helpful before.
mygreeneyedboy and Mirabel and all - how are things?
Waves to Meekra. Apologies if I've rudely ignored someone.

MotherofPearl · 11/07/2015 19:14

Back from my work trip and so sorry to see new joiners. For those struggling with liquids, some find drinks that are either very hot or very cold helpful. I found ice cold nesquik milk quite good, once I got things under control with meds.
Barmee, I remember you from the 2011 thread. Maybe you'll be lucky this time and not suffer so badly? Although I can imagine that it would be unnerving if that's not what you're 'used to'. I'm currently TTC for DC3 but no luck so far. I'm trying to keep up with the thread to remind myself of what to prepare for (and because as StarryNight said above, this thread is the main thing that got me through last time - everyone is so nice).
Hope everyone is doing OK this evening. Waves to Lucinda, Meerka, ElizMum and everyone.

MotherofPearl · 11/07/2015 19:16

Apologies, just seen Meerka had already suggested very hot or very cold drinks! That's what comes of reading too fast!

chopsface · 11/07/2015 19:39

Quick message to Rosie then I'll read back.... I'm on promethazine and find them a God send. However I found taking one wasn't enough for me. I now take 2 a day. One before bed and one at midday. I find that covers the whole 24 hours. The first few days I felt rough and felt like I needed to sleep a lot. I found it worth persevering though. I hope they work for you too. I've not vommed for a few weeks! I still get bouts of nausea though, especially when tired.

chopsface · 11/07/2015 19:51

Me post... Been out with the in laws today. It was too hot :-( had an awful nights sleep as my nose is seriously stuffed up from hayfever and my throat was itching like mad. Woke up with nausea which is unusual for me I'm a pm kinda gal, and had it all day. We walked round a fête and it was so hot I had a dizzy spell. Felt poo all day and I'm glad we decided to come home early. Felt bad dragging dh away from his family tho.

chopsface · 11/07/2015 20:31

Right, had to write notes as brain is addled!

Amy sorry you had a bad experience, my 20w scan letter says no need for full bladder so I'm going with that! Hope I don't get shouted at too (2weeks to go!)

Laura your boss is a git. He's probably peed off for having to get cover all the time. But its not your fault and you should be at home.

green glad you had a good few days and I hope the trip to mil's was a blip.

two glad you've gotta Dr to go to if needed now.

ruby welcome. Hope you decided to get some meds and find a sympathetic Dr.

cunk sorry about your mc, hope you start to feel better soon x

kayme hope your kiddie is OK after their op x

barmee, love and Mirabel hope you all feel better soon x

RubyReins · 11/07/2015 20:39

Hi Lucinda

Yes he is a judgemental wee toe rag! I am really not a veteran at all - sickness last time was nothing on this. I hadn't heard of those sticks so thank you for mentioning them! Managed to eat today and have a bottle of water next to me at all times. But yes... I am very conscious of being dehydrated... I know I am.

I will call the doctor first thing on Monday but I had some vitamin B6 in the cupboard so took some this morning. Might be a placebo effect but not been as sick Smile

Hope everyone is coping.

Meerka · 11/07/2015 23:08

ruby the ketostix are really good.

rosie did you manage to get some ketostix too? do suggest you do, kind of worried that you haven't been able to drink anything at all.

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 12/07/2015 09:05

Oh I knew that you you lot would know. Thank you so much for your advice and kind words. I had the pessaries on Friday and although it was quite horrific it is now over and I am actually quite relieved as I had been waiting to pass things naturally for 2 weeks. They gave me domperidone and it worked. I was quite nervous yesterday about eating as my sickness has been starting at midday every day but it didn't so I had my first dinner last night since last Sunday.
Thank you again, I wish you all speedy pregnancies and you have my every sympathy. Thanks

Meerka · 12/07/2015 10:11

Glad to hear that it went as well as it could. Hoping you recover very quickly and that the nausea completely goes now!

BarmeeMarmee · 12/07/2015 10:44

Morning all. Thank you for all your kind words and reassurances. MotherOfPearl I remember you too-good luck with TTC DC3-it took us longest with this one than any of the others!!

I was so worried this morning about lack of nausea that I went and bought another pregnancy test! It's dating things as it should though so I guess maybe I have to trust my body that it's being kind to me at the moment.

Hope all are having a good day today. I'm off to take the children to their swimming lessons. DH has a stomach bug (oh the irony!) so I'll have to go in with DD - usually he does. Maybe this is why nature is giving me time off from the nausea, lol!

elizabethsmum · 12/07/2015 12:38

Hi all

sorry for absence from thread for a few days. phiolmena I am very sorry for your loss, glad you have now been able to eat something, will help you to get some strength back xxx

waves to all new joiners- sympathetic ears here always. excellent advice from everyone.

starry lovely to hear from you- can't believe your daughter is nearly a year old! I get a lot of migraines around period time , sometimes accompanied by severe nausea similar to hg, although rarely sick. doesn't happen every month although has been more often lately. I buy over the counter vertigon tablets which contain anti- sickness beginning with p! don't have nausea on its own though- always brought on by the headache.

sorry you had such a bad experience with your scan amy. it is embarrassing that some sonographers give the reast of us a bad name.it can be a very demanding and difficult job but that is no excuse for a brusque bedside manner. I am glad all was well with little one though x

waves to everyone

eallison88 · 12/07/2015 15:16

Hope everyone's coping today. Started my hypnobirthing course yesterday, so nice to do something that is so unrelated to vomiting! Did really struggle with my back tho , spent most of the three hours pacing or rocking or fidgeting in mu chair. Have agreed with the class teacher that I can bring my yoga mat and lie on the floor next week - pretty much the only way I can get comfy.

Had a chiropractic assessment last Tues, and first apt of her actually doing something this Tues , really really hopeful she manages to do something to alleviate the pain. I've realised I've got into a bit of a vicious cycle: only way I can sit with any degree of comfort is practically reclining. Problem is that seems to encourage baby to sit very high up in mu ribs, which results in a hell of a lot of pain just under my ribs.10 weeks tomorrow... come on baby, nice and on time please! Or even a few days early....!!!!

rosielady5 · 12/07/2015 15:25

Didn't manage to get any ketostix but I have managed to drink some strawberry milkshake which is staying down so far ... milk normally makes me feel sick so it's quite strange!

eallison88 · 12/07/2015 16:16

Rosie be prepared for all sorts of odd things to work and things you expect to work fail spectacularly. Fuzzy drinks have always made me sick, from being small, especially orange based ones...Once I managed to progress from fridge cold bottled water (all I could stomach for a good few weeks) all I could drink was orange Fanta. Even now, I can only really drink fizzy drinks! Glad dairy is still okay for you, at least you know you've got calcium etc and a lot of people find milkshakes, custard and the like very easy to get down and soothing. For me dairy makes me violently sick (I used to drink milk al the time, and yoghurts have always been a stomach settler for me (read hangover settler!!))

LucindaE · 12/07/2015 18:19

Cunk I'm so glad that you are feeling a little better and Amy and other people on here could help. The treatment for mmc has changed so since my days...
eallison All luck with the chiro appointment.
BarmeeMarmee Hugs.
Chopsface You poor thing. Really sorry to hear about hayfever and sleeplessness, as well as Hyperemesis.
Rosie I'm glad to hear about milkshake.
rubyreinsMother Hen joins Meerka in being anxious about this dehydration for you and Rosie. Have you got a headache, or dry skin, blurry vision, etc? I hope if you didn't have it full force last time, it will go off earlier than average this...
Waves to MotherofPearl elizabethsmum and Meerka.
Apologies if I've missed anyone.

OP posts:
chopsface · 12/07/2015 21:09

Rosie I'm glad you managed to drink milkshake :-)

Lucinda I don't class myself as having hyperemesis as I'm no where near the level of some of the poor ladies on here! I'm not being sick at all any more since taking the promethazine. I think there is morning sickness lurking under there though as dh persuaded me to try and drop the dose last weekend and I felt progressively worse over 3 days until I upped the dose again. I'm a bit sad this weekend though as I have had constant nausea that appears to be breaking through the meds. Nausea I can deal with though. Got to phone the docs tomorrow to see if I can get my reduced hours extended at work. I hate doing it, I feel weak as a person. Not being able to be pregnant and work full time like other pregnant ladies.

Mrsm14 · 12/07/2015 22:54

Hi all, I'm sorry to jump on without catching up with everyone but feeling really worried here. I have suddenly been able to eat today and just feel a whole lot better and I'm only 9 1/2 weeks so too early to just be better? Have been taking stemetil for a week so no change there. My last pregnancy ended in a missed miscarriage and now I'm terrified it is happening again. It just doesn't seem to make sense that I have suddenly stopped feeling sick out of nowhere. Not sure what I'm hoping for others to say just didn't know what else to do except write here. We are due to have a 10 week scan on Thursday and now I am so worried something has gone wrong again.
