Bouncer, rocker or swing? No clue, advice needed!

Hi ladies,

I am looking at options (see title) and realised many of these "seats" are meant to be brought in motion manually. I thought they would all have some sort of a function to switch them on and off, cause if I had to sit next to the baby while it is in the seat to bring it in motion, it sort of makes no sence. I was hoping to use it while I cook, clean etc, basically when I want to leave and keep the baby in it for a while.

Also, there are differences in motion, some are swings, some vibrate, etc. I have no clue what's good and/or recommended?

Can anyone please shed some light on how you normally use which one and how your baby likes it. Thanks a lot in advance! x

hiya sue .. i have the chicco polly swing in natural.. it can swing its self once it's turned on manually and it also has a light and sound box to keep baby entertained .. i haven't got the chance to use it yet as baby is still in my belly hehe

MissMartin I just looked at it an hour ago! There is a video on YouTube showing it in motion.. And it looks like it is a swinging motion only. I'm wondering what to do if the baby doesn't like it..? Maybe it'll prefer vibration or rocking?

That's always the risk that whatever you buy, your baby won't like it.
Mine loved his Babybjörn - it does not have an engine, but baby's own movements make it rock.

Vibrating bouncer for me. Stacks on eBay if you want to get one cheap to try it.

Lots vibrate, not seen many that 'bounce' by themselves and swings are expensive new but lots of people rave about them! My ds would sit in his chicco bouncer for short periods of time but to get anything done I used a sling.

Maybe look at second hand swing as they sound closest to what you are after and if baby doesn't like it sell it and try something else!

We have the Baby Bjorn Balance Soft and DD loves it. 4 friends have also bought it for their LOs since trying it out.

It is very simple and needs the baby to bounce it. Personally I think there is a danger of babies getting overstimulated with some bouncers that vibrate, have lights, play music etc. We bought the BB with the toy rail which DD loves to play with. But if I see it's getting too much for her (usually after 10 min max) I just take it off and she's happy to sit in the bouncer and just look around or watch me. We also have a play mat with lights, music etc but I prefer to have a simple bouncer that she can sit in comfortably. It also folds flat so can be taken on holiday etc.

I've never been able to get DS to go in any of them without screaming. We did (luckily borrow as it's expensive) a baby Bjorn and have tried various others at baby groups but he hates them all. Sorry probably not helpful but perhaps don't invest too much in one in case the baby doesn't like it.

Fisher Price Jungle bouncer chair. Vibrates and baby can make it bounce. Both of mine love it and it's handy to pop them into.

To all BB balance fans - does it only get in motion with baby's movements? What sort of motion is it? And can you trigger the motion yourself, be it manually or automatically??

It's gonna be a difficult decision. But can I assume that all these "devices" are equally safe and do not influence the baby's development in any negative way...? Anyone heard of any concerns of negative impacts of vibrating/bouncing/swinging on the baby??

I have the BB Balance and found the whole 'the baby makes it move itself' to be a load of crap. I had to bounce it myself. But that being said, it was brilliant. He slept hours and hours in it and as a PP said, it folds away nicely. Often as well if he did stir from a sleep it would move just enough to send him back off again without me intervening too much. I didn't mind bouncing it myself anyway, it meant I could sit down without a baby strapped to me and then when he fell asleep I could go off and do bits around the house.

Never heard of any negative impact of using these types of seats. Mine saved my sanity, I would highly recommend it. I got it second hand on eBay to for £50 which is a bargain compared to full price. It looked brand new to me.

yes sure you can bounce the Babybjörn yourself as well. The bouncing is quite gentle, so certainly not over-stimulating for the baby. As it has no engine, it does not really wear out, so totally safe to buy second hand, also fully washable.

Just looked up some video reviews on YouTube... The 4moms Mamaroo seems to be the bentley of all chairs and obviously most expensive one. But it has 5 different motions with 5 different speeds, so more choice for the baby... Any users can tell if it is worth the money?? Also, how heavy is it and is it possible to move from room to room and maybe even take on travels?

I had a vibrating bouncer for dd1 and a swing chair for dd2 (old mamas and papas). I got both of them cheap second hand, but wouldn't have felt short changed if I'd bought them new as they saved my sanity! They were especially useful for propping baby up so that they can see you and you can talk to them whilst you're cooking or cleaning. I think the swing worked best (dd2 hated sleeping on her back but would happily nap in the swing) but it took up a lot of space.

If I were you I'd get multiple bouncers / swings second hand rather than spend a lot on one fancy one. We were bought a very fancy swing as a present when dd was born - she hated it. She much prefers the ones with springy legs that make quite small movements when she moves. We have a bouncer pretty much in every room, didn't pay more than £10 for any of them second hand.
In my experience baby much prefers a more boring bouncer but being in the room where you are doing jobs than something fancy and being left in a different room.
Also - put a bouncer in the bathroom so you can go to the loo and wash hands without rushing. You will need to wee a lot post - birth due to weakened pelvic floor and rushing or faffing about holding the baby whilst weeing is no fun!

I hate to say it, but I think you might have unrealistic expectations of what a chair can do!

Vibrating chairs do seem to help some babies to nap, which might be helpful and is obviously a chance to get things done.

IME, when the baby is awake, he/she will either be the sort of baby who will sit in a chair and watch the world, or she won't. I don't think that a posh chair is going to make much difference for that.

I just googled that chair you mentioned. Over £200! Seriously? . Get a vibrating one if you fancy it, maybe a cheap one for another room. No bouncy chair can be worth that kind of money.
