'cos it's gross?!
haven't forgotten about the cot btw!

Mercy · 11/11/2006 18:18

Listeria basically. Although prob very rare.

It's annoying though isn't it? As soon as you are forbidden something it becomes even more appealing than before!

Skyler · 11/11/2006 18:19

I think it is only liver pate because of too much Vit A??? I wait to be corrected.....

LadyTophamHatt · 11/11/2006 18:19

God I LOVE pate.....I could eat it all day.

Ok...so food poisioning.....Hmmm thats not very likely if I'm caeful with the best before date.

Vitamin A.....hmmm...I won't eat loads of it. Just enough to make a sandwich.
One sandwich won't make me OD on vitamin A, will it??

can I have some then??

according to this site

pregnancy nutriton

its because of listeriosi with some excpetions

"All types of pate whether they are made from meat or vegetables or fish should be avoided unless they are canned or shrink-wrapped and marked pasteurised. Don't forget that a lot of pates are made from liver, which should be avoided during pregnancy, because of the high Vitamin A content.

Mercy · 11/11/2006 18:31

No I think listeria is more complicated than just causing food poisoning, it can affect the foetus as far as I remmeber.

Don't forget that when you are pg your immune system is not functioning at its usual level (ie, at a lower level, making you more susceptible to various infections, slower recovery etc)

But having said that I think in France etc, there is no such 'ban'.

silverfrog · 11/11/2006 18:34

Oh bugger. Why did I have to open this thread? I love pate and would quite happily eat it everyday - which is exactly what I will be doing come Feb when this baby is born!

I have also noticed that pate is making big comeback as a starter in restaurants - good thing on the whole, but why is it the only thing I ever want once I've seen it's there?!

LadyTophamHatt · 11/11/2006 18:36

Oh bollocks....well I've almost finished the bgauette of pate and onion I jsut made.
Thought I'd check the packet to see if it was pasterised and it says on the back not for PG women.

OHHHHH FFS.

My other craving is peanut butter!!

FFs...roll on january.

Don't panic....... it will be fine.

As mercy said, NO BANS if France. I am on my 3rd pg'cy, No.2 in France and there are tiny limitations over here. Pg women live on Pate, Brie, all cheeses etc...... Take it out of a French person's diet and they would starve. It is preparation of food ie cooking and washing very well and screening of out of date produce that they are hot on here.

I'm not trying to tell you to ignor all the regulations but remember that they are there to cover certain people's backs in the UK, Yes there is evidence to suggest that things could cause damage, but the risks are teeny. Like all things in Moderation I'm sure it will be fine.

pupuce · 11/11/2006 19:36

I too would not worry and ate Paté throughout !

Mum2FunkyDude · 11/11/2006 19:38

i think it has to do with pasteurisation rather than anything else.

alex8 · 11/11/2006 19:40

My friends french cousin lost her baby due to eating unpastuerised brie.

Trinityrhino · 11/11/2006 19:43

i wan peanut butter, danish blue and pate cinstantly, it's killing me not to eat it and with xmas round the corner it's only going to get worse grrrrrrr

3andnomore · 11/11/2006 19:45

alex8...not siputing this or anything...but how can they be so sure that that was the reason? Just wondering, iykwim!

alex8 · 11/11/2006 19:46

Just think of how nice its going to be post birth. Am seriously thinking of setting up a supermarket online order to be delivered a few days after just full of banned produce. Sadly want peanuts too but didn't eat them when bf as a I am a paranoid mad woman. When I gave up bf last time the next day I had toast with peanut butter in the am then m&ms mid morning, satay for lunch and pad thai in the evening. bliss

alex8 · 11/11/2006 19:50

well she said it was quite a late one so they did some sort of analysis I think. My friend seemed very certain it was that (is is listeriosis? I get that and toxoplasmosis muddled up,) I have never actually met her cousin. I didn't question it too much as she was very upset.

StrawberryMoon · 11/11/2006 19:53

i went mad for brussels pate when pg..the day i came home, dp had big dish of it, crusty bread, mounds of butter..followed by prawns in sea food dressing and clotted cream with scones..everythign i couldnt eat while pg..shame i didnt have 2 seconds to eat any and midwife ate most of it!

Daisypops · 11/11/2006 20:14

Can't u eat clotted cream when pregnant? I had a quite a few scones with jam and clotted cream a couple of months ago...... worried now. x

lulumama · 11/11/2006 20:45

can have cream..as long as pasterised i believe...

my doc advised me to not by anything like coleslaw or mayonnaise stuff from a deli counter or sandwich shop..but to buy sealed pre packed stuff as less likely to cause a problem re food poisoning...

StrawberryMoon · 11/11/2006 20:45

dont know??..got told to avoid???!!!

lulumama · 11/11/2006 20:47

BTW....eating a pate sandwich or a clotted cream tea ...or whatever it might be that is forbidden....if you have no symptoms... i think after a week or so you can presume you are ok!

and re vitamin a...especially to be avoided in the first trimester..

so don;t beat yourself up for eating a 'forbidden food...once...!

but there are real reasons you are not supposed to eat certain foods in pregnancy.....

Daisypops · 11/11/2006 20:48

The stuff I had was rom supermarket. I'm worried now. FFS.

lulumama · 11/11/2006 20:50

daisy....you ate it a couple of months ago....if you have not had food poisoning you will be ok...the worry is not birth defects, but listeriosis which can cause miscarriage....you are fine...do not worry.....how many weeks pregnant are you?
