Unexpected obstetrics appointment

So I have had my booking appointment and 12 week scan, and have my 16 week appointment and my 20 week scan dates both confirmed.

However I've come home today to a letter from my hospital with a confirmation of an 'obstetrics outpatient appointment' on a different date. This is the first I've heard of it and my first pregnancy and I've no idea what it's about!! Can anyone shed any light?

Or low/high BMI? Maybe your hospital does it routinely.

No ongoing issues or history or anything...my bmi is 29 Blush could that be it? And why do they need to see me?

I got a letter saying this, it turned out to be a glucose tolerance test for gestational diabetes. There was a second letter in the envelope explaining that I had to take a bottle of lucozade with me. Could it be that I wonder?

I don't have a second letter in there and have no family history of diabetes (apart from my grandmother who developed it when elderly but pretty sure the midwife didn't put it on my notes)

It must be down to my bmi I think which is awful, I thought I'd be ok as it is under 30. I'd be too embarrassed to tell even my DH if it is that. I am overweight but quite tall and carry it fairly well, I bought a size 12 dress two days ago for a wedding so am not huge by any means.

I had one to measure cervix length as I'd had multiple abnormal smear test results? Could it be that?

No abnormal smears but I do have recurrent uti's which is on my notes, midwife said this would be monitored with monthly urine samples at my booking in.

My pregnancy was my first and my BMI was 31. But I lost weight for the first 3 months! They kept an eye on my weight throughout- but I'm 35 which makes me an older first timer and my thyroid gland does not work and I have had dodgy smear results in the past. But I sailed through it. Don't worry about it, it'll be nothing serious.

Thanks lulu I just really don't want to have consultant led care! I feel like it's unnecessary intervention when I'm healthy otherwise and don't want to have extra appointments and time off work.

Just weighed myself and I have lost at least 3lbs since pre pregnancy (I am 14 weeks). I don't feel my weight is a major concern. Can I refuse the appointment if that's what it's based on?

I would be shocked if it is BMI, mine was 32 at booking in and although I saw a consultant it was for a short cervix which is now all fine and I have been discharged back to full midwife led care. Can you ask your midwife why you were referred? Personally I would go as it's an extra check up. If you have no issues then they would likely just discharge you back to the MW once they have spoken to you

Have you had any surgery in the past or reaction to anaesthetic? There are so many reasons you can be referred. A of of the time it is one appointment and then they sign you back to the midwife.

I was initially referred for one thing. Appointment was done and I mentioned about bleeding and was then referred again to check my cervix, which ended up being a good thing as I had problems with it shortening.

There should be a check list in your maternity notes which is a risk assessment, the things my midwife checked yes for I was referred for and then notes on the following page stating why I had been referred. Worth checking that.

When I had a baby consultant led care was for bmi over 35, though below that you got the extra information about risks in pregnancy and a gtt test...

Under 30 for bmi shouldn't trigger any extra care, so I highly, highly doubt it is that. Ring your midwife and ask?
