Unexpected obstetrics appointment

So I have had my booking appointment and 12 week scan, and have my 16 week appointment and my 20 week scan dates both confirmed.

However I've come home today to a letter from my hospital with a confirmation of an 'obstetrics outpatient appointment' on a different date. This is the first I've heard of it and my first pregnancy and I've no idea what it's about!! Can anyone shed any light?

My BMI was 33 and I got a specific letter about an eating clinic, so I doubt it's that. Based on the experiences I've had with admin, my guess is it could be an admin error of some sort. To illustrate, I got 3 identical letters confirming booking-in and nothing for the date we were given for 12 week scan. Got there, really nervous. Scan not booked and closed on Saturdays!!! Then got 3 letters re diet clinic - all posted together, each one with a different date, saying "we still haven't heard from you" and the last one ending with "so we've referred you back to your GP"... Grrr...

The medical staff are excellent, the supporting admin not always, so I would just ring them to check if I were you. It may well be nothing!

No idea what it's about! But my bmi is 31 and I'm under mwlc for now at least. The gestational diabetes test is done at 26/28 weeks according to my mw, I have to have it as bmi and dad is type 1 diabetic.

Can you ring them up and ask?

I had one for an a condition that my dh has that is not hereditary. Neither of us could understand why I was there. Have you got an enthusiastic midwife?

Thanks all of you for being so helpful and reassuring! On the risk checklist I think recurring uti's are there and nothing else so maybe it s that. They open at 9 so I'll give them a call this morning and find out.

I seriously doubt it's BMI related- and even if it was if you're in the category of buying size 12 dresses you seriously have nothing to be embarrassed about!

I'd wager it's to check up on the recurrent UTI if that's the only 'unusual' thing you mentioned at booking. Try not to worry- if it's nothing serious the consultant will discharge you back to midwife led care- esp if that's what you request.

It's probably a tick box excercise - I'd certainly go though. Most likely outcome is that they'll have a few questions, they'll ask, you'll answer and then you get sent back to mlc.
Definitely go though. They do need to exclude whatever it is they are contacting you about :)

I had this, having not had one with DC1, and was confused so rang the hospital to ask, so you could try that. It turned out that whilst with DC1 the very experienced midwife saw nothing to worry the doctors about, with DC2 the very new midwife sent me to obstetrics to talk to them about my asthma, covering all bases. I still went and actually ended up discussing all sorts of things about the last birth and other worries I had so it was really useful!

Thanks lottie, I am generally ok with my weight - I could definitely lose a stone (or even two) but I am quite tall and it all seems to be distributed reasonably well, I just am mortified now that I'm being weighed and measured and poked etc! and having seen some similar threads on here was a bit worried I'd be had a pop at - but everyone has been very kind and helpful.

I called them today and it is because of the UTI thing, which is actually great because if there's anything they can do to help with that (low daily dose of antibiotics or something) it would be life changing! So hopefully it will be a check up and resolution and then I can be discharged back to mw led care.

I wouldn't worry about it, just go along and see!

purplebiro · 28/05/2015 12:54

Could be BMI - guess it depends on the threshold where you are - I was BMI 30 at booking in and that put me just over the line where we are (gutted, I'd been dieting deliberately to avoid just that before getting preggo) but I'm also tall and wear it well (I'm a loose 14) and I've not had very much in the way of patronising lectures - in fact several times I've mentioned my BMI to midwives as a possible explanation for something and they've looked at me and said "oh you're not someone we'd worry about with that" :)

tootsroots · 28/05/2015 14:31

I had it for asthma and back pain... no biggie.. tbh a waste of time as they said actually you are low risk.

Good luck!

SnozzberryPie · 28/05/2015 14:59

Interesting as I never had one for asthma. What did they say (if you don't mind my asking)? My asthma seems to have got a lot worse this time to the point where I am considering making a gp appointment.

Goldiesfoc1982 · 30/07/2019 17:51

I have a obstetrics appointment tomorrow and when I phoned and asked why I have one there said my blood test have cone back with some abnormalities. Am worried sick to go and find out, has anyone else been for that reason.

Teddybear45 · 30/07/2019 18:03

Recurrent Uti’s put you for higher risk of preterm birth / rupture of waters. They probably just want to ask you some extra questions.
