How much weight did you gain in your first trimester?

I'm 13 weeks and I feel and look bigger than I've ever have. My weight has always been around 52-53 kilos (about 8.5 stones) and I am (was) size 8-10 always. All of a sudden nothing fits. My boobs, legs, belly are fat (not the bump), and at my 10 weeks booking in appointment I was weighted and was almost 55 kilos already... Now I feel like I'm 56, I've never weighted this before (need to buy scales too). It scares me, is that how much I'm supposed to be gaining?? P.S. I must admit I started eating a lot, feel hungry all the time.. What do I do? Sad

Hi luv. I know I am going to put on a ton of weight too. I'm 9 weeks and eating constantly, and all of it crap as that's what keeps the nausea at bay. I put on a kilo last week alone :-( Have you been snacking away the nausea too? I'm hoping the nausea stops in the 2nd trimester and I can start to do some more exercise and get out and about and eat better than I have been! Are you doing any exercise? Swimming, walks?

bunny85 · 16/05/2015 20:13

Hi chopsface, thanks for your reply. Glad to hear I'm not alone. Is it your first pregnancy? First one for me. I didn't feel sick for long, maybe few days, a week max, and yes constant snacking made it better (I even kept some bread and banana next to my bed to snack at night!Confused), then very soon the nausea went, but the hunger stayed, omg the hunger is terrible. I'm also off work and being all day at home doesn't help, all I do is snacking cause I'm bored! And yes I do walk for an hour daily. I also sleep a lot. So not the best lifestyle apart from walking.
I've always been a super healthy eater, now I want so much pasta, pizza, pancakes!..
The wake up call was when I 1) couldn't fit in any of my dresses last week for my fiancé's birthday party 2) looked at the pics later on in horror...Shock

I'm at the other end of the scale am borderline overweight/obese(and thats after a fair bit of slimming, am proud to be bmi 29.2) I put on 2-3 pounds at the end of the 1st trimester and at 19 weeks I'm now 4.5lbs heavier than at the start.
I think you are building up stores of energy, you are "allowed" to gain more starting where you are. You may also find as your hormones settle your appetite goes back to normal.

Rebecca1608 · 16/05/2015 21:04

I don't think weighing yourself in pregnancy is a good idea anyway. I'm guilty of it myself but it just makes you feel shit when already hormonal. You're making a human. I'm 33 weeks with twins 3 weeks left to go and i've put on 2 stone. I gained a stone plus in first trimester and a stone between second and third however the last couple of weeks i have only been eating little healthy and often. Mostly because i have no room left lol i've lost 2lbs this week but i know i could possibly put on a couple more lbs. I've gone from size 10 to a 14 but i'm not worrying about it. Go easy on yourself Flowers have some Cake Smile

bunny85 · 16/05/2015 21:10

Oh thanks girls I feel a bit better... I think I also eat much more when I get nervous, and I'm VERY nervous at the moment as it's my first ever scan on Monday morning! Just one more day left! Absolutely petrified and worried sick Confused

With my first pregnancy I put on weight straight away. With DC2 and DC3 I actually lost weight in the first trimester.

Rebecca1608 · 16/05/2015 21:22

First trimester is tough! Most healthy food just made me feel sick and for weeks i lived on ready salted crisps. Quavers. Pure orange juice and cheese sandwiches (even at 6am) haha. I probably ate my body weight in Ben & Jerrys too. Good luck for your first scan on monday. Exciting for you x

bunny85 · 16/05/2015 21:33

Rebecca, tell me about it! Ice cream is a different story... I've taken it to a whole new level - how about not just eating ice cream with a spoon, but with biscuits instead of a spoon? Shock Grin

Lemon, it must also feel scary when you start losing weight. However it's no wonder if one has sickness/vomiting quite a bit!

With both my pregnancies the weight piled on in the first 20 weeks. I put on five kilos in a month at one point. And the annoying thing was that my diet, while not the healthiest it could have been, was not bad. I didn't once give in to my mcdonalds cravings....

But it did even out and I put on about 14 kilos in total both times. First ten came off very quickly, the last four more slowly. I think a lot of it was water, maybe the same for you?

Rebecca1608 · 16/05/2015 21:57

Haha bunny! That sounds amazing!! Grin hope everything goes well for you.

gingerbreadmam · 16/05/2015 21:57

you sounded very slim to start with so i wouldnt worry at all. if youre happy with what youre eating just enjoy your pregnancy and as long as youre not putting on ridiculous amounts of weight (which is doesnt sound like you are) im sure it will aort itself out once baby is here.

im bigger with a high bmi and lost a couple of lb between booking in and 16wk apt. the midwife told me at booking in tho bigger people tend to do that as theyre so worried about the extra weight (im now getting on for 18wks and my bump is huge so i think that first weight loss was fluke).

CointreauVersial · 16/05/2015 21:58

I lost weight! Only a couple of pounds, but I went right off food.

chopsface · 16/05/2015 22:09

I get you with the pizza, pasta, crisps thing! Its terrible isn't it! Before I got preg I was eating so healthy andlow carb. I was more of a chocolate person than a savoury person. Now I eat crisps and can't look at chocolate! Fruit just doesn't fill the hunger gap like junk. How can you eat healthily like it says in the guides if our bodies aren't craving it?!

bunny85 · 16/05/2015 22:18

NanoNinja, I know, it just feels out of control doesn't it! My diet (despite my ice cream indulgence) is not bad either - I cook at home, no takeaways, veggies and stuff... I think you might be right about water!

Thank you for your wishes Rebecca.

Gingerbreadmum, yes, I used to be slim once upon a time Grin Thank you for your reassurance though. It's hard being a first timer as you don't know what to expect, every day something new! Having huge bump is nice though. I have none!

CointreauVersial, I suppose it changed to opposite very quickly from that! Grin

im 17 or 18 weeks and have had a bump i could notice from about 11 or 12 but its only this wk its a really obvious baby bump to others. yours will come soon.

your diet sounds great btw mines terrible. in the second trimester tho i would say im eating less but more often apart from the odd day here pr there where ive been like a bottomless pit. i assume baby is on a growth spurt when that happens lol.

Roseybee10 · 16/05/2015 22:46

I think I gained 6lbs first time in 1st trimester and about 3lbs second time.

bunny85 · 16/05/2015 23:42

Oh well! No matter how many stones, it is all worth it! Good luck to you all with your pregnancies Envy

boatrace30 · 17/05/2015 06:41

I put on 3/4 kilos in first trimester (also a size 10 to start with) - mainly because I had to eat carbs constantly to keep the nausea at bay. I've worried about it constantly, but always given in to what my body wants (within reason!) as I think that is probably best for the baby. Fast forward to 37 weeks and I have gained 15kgs... so a bit more than recommended, fingers crossed it will disappear quickly!
I guess just try not to worry about it and it seems to me that nothing is "normal" in pregnancy

sianihedgehog · 17/05/2015 09:33

I gained a full stone in the first trimester, similar starting weight to you as well. I'm now into the third trimester and haven't gained any more weight at all - it's been hard to eat because of reflux and just not having room for food. Glad of all that weight gain now!
I wouldn't worry too much, your body usually knows what it's doing, and the guidelines around weight are averages.

Focusfocus · 17/05/2015 09:54

I'm 4 months now and have gained 3.5 kgs ish. I must say the gain was rapid in months 2 and 3 and has plateaued a bit in month 4 and am now on track for my intended 9 kg weight gain. My advantage is that I've not had cravings of any substantial kind, and my eating hasn't changed significantly. So I am going to naively assume this is how it's going to be, and I will keep it at this rate.

bunny85 · 17/05/2015 11:51

Thanks girls, very helpful! So I am right in my understanding that even if I didn't eat as much as I have, my body would still put on weight, as in fat? Why is that? I often see pregnant women who are really very slim, their original size (say legs, boobs, arms all the same) with just the bump sticking out. I'm just curious as to why it is happening.

Everyone is different, with my 1st I lost half a stone in the first trimester as I had very bad sickness, and felt very guilty about it (I was 8 and a half stone to begin with so hadn't really got the spare to lose). This pregnancy #2 has been better, nausea but no sickness and I only lost about a pound.
Everyone varies a lot in pregnancy weight gain so I wouldn't worry too much, your midwife would flag it if your bmi was outside of normal and it sounds like you're perfectly normal, good luck for the scan

bunny85 · 17/05/2015 12:09

Thank you, tomorrow morning can't possibly come soon enough!!
