I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

elizabethsmum So agree about those tinned peaches (and the juice). I hope those people are OK. I believe muddylettuce was dong brilliantly when last heard of. I think NewShoesPlease was the one who had bleeding due to a condition which was nerve racking.
Lilac Well done on ASDA trip - ice lollies are certainly soothing. That's horrible, about migraine; I found mine much more frequent during the first fourteen weeks but then they vanished until I stopped breast feeding. I hope the same happens for you, or even better, that they vanish for ever...

lilac the good news is that you can sit entirely happily and peacefully with a tinyone asleep on your tummy or hanging onto a nipple or bottle and watch a film ... many happy hours were passed watching Buffy again doing that :)

Yes, I think your husband needs to read up on the HELPHER forums. Trying to help is lovely, but knowing how to help is even better.

ealli and dilly and hello and dro and melle and everyone I hope it's not been too bad a day

LucindaE · 09/05/2015 18:20

Meerka and lilac That is so true of normal babies -not sleepless little horrors such as mine was. I'm heartily happy for most women on here, who've been through so much, that most babies are restful. It's great too, that a lot of women who've had spd have easy births, and Hello I do hope that happens for you. You deserve some good luck for a change. Remind me of your job?
About the tooth thing - Toothfairy on here is a dental nurse and would know more than me, but I gather that one isn't meant to clean ones teeth for fifteen minutes after vomiting, only to rinse out ones mouth with water, I assume this is to do with the same thing about your not meant to clean them for fifteen minutes after eating - chance would be a fine thing, when one is at ones worst.

lucinda Its a desk based job, not physically tiring but mentally draining dealing with a lot of data using dual screens which doesn't help the motion sickness side of things! Oh well only 2 weeks (of four hour days) left Grin

I think the physio has really helped as im not in as much pain as before which is great. I'm having an ELCS due to previous complications which led to me having an EMCS with my son so im hoping for a much calmer experience this time round [grin

Hope everyone is coping as well as can be and enjoying their weekend x

LucindaE · 09/05/2015 19:43

Hello I hope so about ELCS. That s good news about the physio, sometimes it does take a day or so to feel the benefit. I don't know how you've managed to keep on working if you have to look at screens a lot Envy.

Well I was signed off for 3 months so went back in feb plus I am lucky to have a wonderful boss who is happy for me to pop out for fresh air etc when needed!

Melleebacca · 10/05/2015 09:16

It's Mother's Day here in NZ, so happy Mother's Day to all the wonderful mothers and mothers to be on this fabulous forum.

After a week of not vomiting, I got a little bold today and did about half an hour of shopping with the hubby (new washer and dryer yay!). Then spent the afternoon with the in laws and the nephew terrors. It's amazing how little you need to do in order to bring the vomiting back. I currently only have a week left on my doctors note but I'm going to need at least a few more weeks off work.

I hope everyone is as well as can be and had a wonderful weekend!

LucindaE · 10/05/2015 09:52

Mellebacca Have a great NZ mothers' day. Don't hurry back t work.
Hello Thank goodness to hear there are still some humane bosses about,, the way some women on this thread have been treated is purely outrageous, including teachers and some nurses (you'd think working in a medical environment would have made their managers more aware, but no).
I hope everyone isn't too bad today.

My boss has been wonderful and I know it's been tough on her as we were already so short staffed without me going off but she has always maintained that the most important thing is mine and babys health. I'm thinking of getting her a little thank you present before I go off on mat leave to show how much I've appreciated her support over the last few months!

eallison88 · 10/05/2015 15:37

Hi ladies, bit of a tmi post, consider yourselves warned.

I'm weaning off the ondansetron, aiming for 2 x 8mg a day rather than 3 doses, and some days I've managed only 1. I'm managing in terms of sickness/nausea, but heartburn, trapped wind and in particular constipation seems to be stepping up. I only had a week or two of really bad constipation early on with the ondansetron, and then it went away completely. But, bizarrely, now I'm cutting back on it the constipation is stepping up... has anyone else noticed this? Constipation combined with really bad wind (that's really really difficult to shift) is making for spells of real uncomfortableness. Today especially has been horrid, every movement I make just really hurts. I think baby's had a growth spurt in tge last few days as well, which doesn't help as al of a sudden all my organs have less space than they're used it. I could cope with being uncomfortable but at times I've been doubled over in pain (hubby was concerned j was going into super early labour earlier today). Currently lying on the sofa trying not to move. But waiting for my 5 nephews and nieces to cone round (with their parents!) for my birthday tea... so this could be fun! It's totally acceptable to lie on the sofa and few watch a Disney film with them, yes?!

Hellohellohowareyou · 10/05/2015 16:25

ealluson get some lactulose and take it religiously, I hated the constipation when taking ondansetron!

Meerka · 10/05/2015 18:45

melle yes, its alarming how limited you become. Though doing something normal like shopping and visiting does cheer the soul! It was mother's day here too :)

hello it's so good to hear your boss has been so good. Someone with the right priorities !

ealli Happy birthday! :) and yes I hope you're now curled up on the sofa happily doing nothing while the troops rampage =) Hope the constipation / wind eases. I was told to drink Gaviscon which went down by the bottleload and did help, but lactulose is better for bowels isn't it.

Hope eveyrone else is surviving

elizabethsmum · 10/05/2015 20:41

hi all and happy mother's day to those celebrating today! Happy birthday eallison- have you tried peppermint tea??

Melleebacca · 10/05/2015 21:21

Ealli - Happy Birthday! I'm down to only 1 x 8mg ondansetron a day, but still suffering from mild constipation. I'm trying to get around it by using food instead of medication. So a couple of prunes here and there. Keep an eye on your fluid levels too, decreased fluid intake does cause constipation.

Meerka · 11/05/2015 07:53

good morning, hope everyone had a peaceful night and is reasonably ok today

Droflove · 11/05/2015 09:51

Disappeared for the weekend. Went to gp on Friday and she said she'd prescribe something if I couldn't cope. I'll think about it if I'm really struggling. Horrendous vomiting on Friday but the sat and sun were very bareable. Hardly any vomiting and a clear ish head most of the day. It was actually ok. My mum was staying to help as dh was away for the weekend and that helped I'm sure but the major difference was no laptop or phone use really all weekend. Usually I'm glued to it for work all day. I wonder if it's making me sicker.

LilacWine7 · 11/05/2015 10:32

Morning ladies

Eallison that sounds painful! Hope you had a nice birthday, were you able to stay on sofa? I get bad heartburn too so I feel your pain! I'm taking Zantac (ranitidine) twice a day (1 tablet soon as I wake then another before bed) seems to keep it under control. I also take Spearmint Rennies and Gaviscon in between when Zantac's not enough. Gaviscon comes in little handbag-size sachets so i always have some with me (you just tear top and drink the liquid straight from sachet). I never ever had heartburn before I got pregnant!! Didn't realise what it was for weeks, was crying over loo sometimes because throat was being scorched when vomiting. My heartburn got worse around week20, like you I feel like there's less space for my internal organs! I feel like everything's being shoved up into my rib-cage, even my lungs feel squashed. And I don't even have a big bump yet! Have you tried relaxing your abdominal muscles? I think part of my problem is I unconsciously hold my abs quite tight, so there's more pressure on organs. When I focus on relaxing them and breathing more deeply I feel less restricted around ribs. Friends tell me I'll feel better once bump 'pops out' but not sure when this is supposed to happen?

I feel like I need to wee every 15minutes it's driving me mad :-( Feels like UTI but without burning, just extreme pressure and urgency and abdominal pain when weeing. Latest urine test was negative for infection. So i guess it's just the baby squashing my bladder? I keep having braxton-hicks as well, not painful but sooo uncomfortable. Really annoying at night, I'm up and down to loo like a yo-yo. Sometimes i need to go again within minutes, lucky DH is a deep sleeper!

Went for short walk with DH yesterday and enjoyed it so much Smile We kept to countryside paths so I could be sick in hedges if needed to but nausea held off. Fresh spring air and sunshine was reviving. My sense of smell is so heightened, even grass and nettles had lovely fresh scents, mixing with lemon balm and different tree-blossoms. I felt I could smell every individual tree and they all had slightly different scents! So at least this vivid sense of smell has one silver lining lol

Thanks to whoever recommended Haribo fizzy cola bottles!! They're very useful for staving off nausea.

LilacWine7 · 11/05/2015 10:41

Droflove glad you had a better weekend. Screens make my nausea a lot worse I think this is common with hg. Do you find they trigger headaches too? I'm ok with laptop and Kindle for short periods but looking at phone screen makes me feel sicker. Even 5 minutes scrolling on phone can set me off vomiting. I can't watch TV either but I've been comforting myself with what Meerka said about watching TV with baby on breast or asleep in lap, i love that idea! Will have a whole season of Game of Thrones stored up by September Smile

LucindaE · 11/05/2015 17:22

Off tomorrow early for Bucks - but I know this thread will be welll cared for.
Eallison A belated happy birthday - sorry missed that. Strange there are different mothers' days in different countries, well, maybe not so strange. That sounds truly awful. Never worry about tim on here, no such thing. I'm so glad Hello recommended lactulose - I stupidly always get stuck over the name. It's interestingLilac says ranatadine helps, I knew it helped heartburn. Droflove A lot of women on these threads say that a moving screen makes things worse - so awkward when they're so hard to avoid at workplaces. You are still battling on without meds? I'm so glad you had a couple of better days. Melleebacca Well done on the prunes. Someone on here was brave enough to take fibrogel, but I don't know how- that is sickening enough normally. I've heard those suppositories are good. It's weird as they won't sell them at chemists for pregnant women, but use them in hospitals routinely. Waves to lovely Meerka and elizabethsum and MotherofPearl and everyone and back in a couple of days.

OP posts:
Meerka · 11/05/2015 17:49

droflove getting help around the house really does make a difference doesnt it? You can rest so much better. Im guessing there is no way to avoid screens at work? like so many others I found they made htings way worse too ...

lilac the walk sounds absoltuely lovely :) Preg is just horribly uncomfortable even without the HG, I reckon. Don't know how some women glow. Unfair, it is !

mother Hen have a good trip away and see you in a couple days :)

eallison88 · 11/05/2015 17:50

I had a lovely day. Today has been difficult, as is always the case if I push too far. But if was worth it. My niece, 3, has taken to making the sign of the cross on my belly during Mass, cos "baby can't do it for itself at the moment". Possibly the cutest thing, completely melted my heart when she first did it! I'll have a go with fruit for amother day or so, then get hubby to chemist for me!

elizabethsmum · 11/05/2015 18:24

glad the haribos are helping lilac Wink

elizabethsmum · 11/05/2015 21:10

screens made my sickness/nausea at lot worse- couldn't watch tv for weeks- listened with head under blanket sometimes to relieve boredom! if I have bad headaches now can't look at screens / phone otherwise i"ll be a lot worse. interestingly had a very bad day at work on Sat and felt very nauseated/terrible headache. struggled through and then went straight to the shop and had a giant bag of Smith's salt and vinegar square crisps which I always craved with hg. I honestly feel that there is some sort of genetic tendency to it all as I have always suffered with motion sickness, absolutely no way I could ever read in the car when we were kids etc whereas my sister could. even struggle with looking at phone on bus or if passenger etc even now!

Amyyy27 · 12/05/2015 09:55

Hi ladies hope I can join and ask a quick question?

Currently 13+6 (Due 11th November) and suffered from HG since week 6.

I noticed I wasn't sick as much yesterday (although still more than normal people!) and hoped that this might be the start of getting better. Today, no vomiting at all... still felt sickly but nowhere near as bad as usual. And no vomit!! what?! That's the first time in 8 weeks! So basically my question is because I am panicking that something is wrong... did anyone here happen to have anything similar around this time? or should I ring my midwife?

I feel really silly as I thought I would feel amazing if/when the day came when there would be no vomit but I feel terrible due to worry :(

Amyyy27 · 12/05/2015 10:36

Well after realising my sickness had vanished altogether I panicked and called the midwife so my question has been answered! Blush

She wasn't concerned at all... told me they expect extreme sickness to go around 16-18 weeks but to expect a few days here and there in the couple of weeks beforehand where there will be no sickness!
