I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

lilac it is amazing how much a few hours out takes out of you at this stage. Just rest up as much as you can today. sorry you are sufferering today but I suppose it is a good demonstration to your dh of how much hg does limit what you are able to do at this stage.

welcome daffodil really sorry you are suffering. we will do our best to support you through it. remember no much thing as tmi here!!

ems sorry you are having a bad relapse at the moment. Are you managing to keep anything (incl) ondansetron - down? keep an eye on keytones/signs of dehydration. I went abroad (longhaul) in both of my hg pregnancies - arranged beforehand and totally didn't want to go but did actually manage ok and came back feeling a bit better both times. also one of the holidays was a lazing about beach one so there was no rushing about- we just didn't do an awful lot but tried to make the most of the rest/surroundings.

motherofpearl yes another definite thumbs up for ice cold choc nesquik here - also macd choc milkshake. weird what hg does to taste buds/what hg ravaged stomach will actually tolerate!

waves to amy, hello, eallison, mellee, meerka, lucinda and everyone.

Meerka · 25/05/2015 09:29

ems I hope you are feeling a bit better today. You could be getting a real improvement any time around now. The hormones fluctuate so there's often good times and bad so you could well come in for a run of good days soon

How are you today daffodil and penguin?

lilac i hope you've got back to 'normal' after yesterday. It's really good you could go out at all, hopefully there will be more and more days like that. Just take it very easy the day after.

english rose how are you doing now?

hello im sorry, i forgot to say Congrats on your freedom! that is great =) really can't be long to go now!

Melleebacca · 25/05/2015 10:10

Hi all,

I'm lying here perfectly still, feeling the lump in my throat grow and listening to my heart speeding up. All the tell-tale signs that I'm going to hurl. Just having a bad day.

Welcome to all the poor newbies who are surviving day by day. Waves to all that are looking at the light at the end of the long tunnel.

The last 24 hours I have been starting to get achy joints. I'm only 18 weeks and have barely gained any weight so I know it's not from pregnancy pressure. I'm a little concerned that it's due to prolonged minimal activity and malnourished bones. Anyone else suffering from this? It's not painful yet, just uncomfortable.

Living life one day at a time!

LilacWine7 · 25/05/2015 11:19

Mellee hope your day improves! Are all your joints achy or just some? I've had achiness in lower back and hips most of 2nd trimester (very stiff and painful today due to excessive walking on Sat!) my back also stiffens up when I've been in bed a lot or if I sit in one position too long without stretching. My other joints are fine though. Could it be after-effects of cold virus making you feel achy?

Ems how are you feeling today? Sorry you're having a relapse!

I still can't manage much liquid. Just want to drink a full glass of chilled water without bringing it back up!! Decided city centre is too ambitious for today so we're going for outing to.. erm.. Tesco instead so I can browse ice-lolly aisle!! Grin Can't believe I'm so excited over a trip to supermarket lol

eallison88 · 25/05/2015 11:32

Hi all, not had chance to read back yet, but wanted to let people know that I've had a lovely weekend. Slight blip on Saturday night when I was sick (in a field, but managed to find a bit with no people!) and then felt really ill. But it was alright, had a little cry cos I was angry with myself (pushed myself too far and then over the edge with a soya milk hot chocolate!) then went back to my dad's With hubby. We actually only missed one act, so could've been worse. Until that point it was fab - beautiful sun, great music and company. I even got a compliment from one of the bands for "being the cool pregnant lady dancing - but please don't give birth today!". I think the dancing was actually the downfall - but j wouldn't change it cos I had so muh fun! Luckily, it's now half term and I have loads of peace and quiet and time to recover.

Hope everyone else is managing, and I noticed a few new people to the thread; welcome and sorry you need to be here.

Amyyy27 · 25/05/2015 12:30

ealli pleased you had a lovely weekend!

Sorry to those having a bad day, a bad day here too. Tried to goout to do food shop with OH, was sick in car on way there. Couldn't manage shopping so came home and sick in car again :( lying very still in bed now!

Daffodil3228 · 25/05/2015 13:06

Hello Ems sorry to hear the symptoms have come back so badly this week. I hope this week they start to die down and that you will be able to go on your holiday coming up. It's strange how this thing doesn't seem to get better or worse in a straight line, but people do say it can disappear completely later on and I hope this happens for you this week.
Just wanted to say hi on here, thank goodness no vomiting today but feel pretty drowsy and sick, it's a flat on the back day today! At home on my own so a bit bored, so just sending a wave and I hope you are all doing ok today. X

Daffodil3228 · 25/05/2015 13:22

Oops sorry posted out of sync cos forgot there is a second page! Hi motherofpearl thanks for the nesquik suggestion- I can drink milk and this might be a way for me to have chocolate I'm going to try it!! Hi to Elizabethsmum and Meerka too Smile
melleebacca so sorry to hear how you are suffering today. I wondered if you find baths help with sore joints? Not sure how it would be for you with the nausea but I have found them quite comforting if I stay lying down and if I throw up at least I'm in the right room!!
Amy you're my flat on the back friend for today- lol- hope your symptoms ease off today and you get lots of tic!!
Eallison I'm just admiring that you went to the festival! That's great!
Here's a wave hello to anyone I've forgot, brains not that reliable today Smile X

LucindaE · 25/05/2015 17:13

Mellee So sorry you feel bad. That feeling of the blocked throat is so disgusting. Might be worth mentioning worry over sore joints to midwife just for reassurance. I do remember having a really achey ribcage...
lilac Ah, it's not fair when a trip to the supermarket is exciting. I'm glad you were able to get out over the weekend, it does lift isolated feelings so much and stop pressure from anxious OH's.
EmsLike others, wonder if it's a hormonal surge and may well ease off?
Sorry about relapse for whatever reason. Someone on here was clever enough to advise the hotel abroad about the Hyperemesis, and they were really helpful over meals. Might that be possible? Sorry I've stupidly forgotten who it was, rude of me.I do hope you've turned the corner in a couple of weeks, though, and feeling a lot better.
ealison'Grin Congratulations to 'The cool pregnant lady dancing'. Very brave of you ot attend a music festival, my goodness.
Daffodil I'm glad no puking today, and congratulations on coke, lollies, etc.
elizabethsmum My staple diet of crisps and coke was purely disgusting, Grin
Waves to Penguin and Meerka and everybody. Apologies to anyone I've rudely overlooked, cross posted with.

Penguinandminipenguin · 25/05/2015 18:03

Hi everyone,

Hope you're all doing as well as possible. I spent 8 1/2 hours in hospital on Saturday due to reduced movements. The whole experience was awful, we were treated really badly and it wasn't overly reassuring! Luckily I've felt some kicks since :) BabyPenguin kicks right on cue as I type this

We have another scan tomorrow and see the consultant so fx it all goes ok. Feeling pretty sick and rough today though, Saturday really knocked us both for six tbh. We were told to get there for 12.30, so all I had eaten was some cereal. By 4.30 I sent dh to get a sandwhich for us both cos I was so weak. In the end, he ended up being the one who was sick, not me! But it's sort of had a knock on effect now today/yesterday and been feeling rough.

LucindaE · 25/05/2015 19:07

Penguin How awful for you, that's so stressful, just what you don't need.
I'm so glad Baby Penguin is active now. It's awful they weren't reassuirng. That is what you need more than anything. The stress must have set you back a lot. The standard of care sounds awful. I may be wrong, but I thought I'd heard somwhere that certain anti emetics can make the baby a little less active, a bit more inclined to sleep, than s/he might be otherwise - but not in a way that affects the health at all or they wouldn't be prescribed. Did they say that might be it? But I could be wrong.

OP posts:
Melleebacca · 25/05/2015 19:20

Hi all - thanks for all the suggestions about my achy joints. It's my hips, knees and ankles that are uncomfortable.
Daffodil - I've been having baths for weeks, it's just way too hard for me to cope with standing for a shower.
Ealli - I'm so impressed with your dancing and ability to go to a festival, rest up a bit now, you accomplished so much!
Penguin - I'm so sorry about the hospital visit. I'm crossing my fingers for you.
I'm currently enjoying the few minutes after I wake up which is when I feel like a normal person. The nausea and aches are just starting up now...

originalusernamefail · 25/05/2015 19:21

Hi everyone may I please join in on this thread. Currently approx 7-8 weeks pg with DC2 (dating scan on Thurs!) and already struggling. This will be my 2nd HG pregnancy (lasted to term with DS ), I'm taking Stemetil with a bit of relief and signed off work for the next week. Just need to find a way to muddle through, I don't remember feeling so hopeless last time Sad.

Melleebacca · 25/05/2015 19:45

Welcome original - I found the most hopeless time to be between weeks 8 and 14. The tunnel seems so long at the beginning. The best way to muddle through is to have a good GP that is on to it with the anti-emetics, take them and rest, rest, rest. Keep taking small amounts of liquids, most of the water you drink gets into your system after 5minutes, so try to drink and refrain from vomiting as long as you can to prevent dehydration.
And come on here whenever you need support. It's an awful journey, but it's nice to have people who understand it.

Penguinandminipenguin · 25/05/2015 20:01

Lucinda - that's an interesting thought actually. They never asked what medication I was on so they never said. We were told to arrive for 12.30, got there and had to wait until 1.30 to be given a bed. Then another 30 mins until I was hooked up onto the ctg machine. So I had an hour and 30 mins (plus the drive) of not knowing if my baby was ok.

Then I was meant to be on the machine for 30 mins, but they forgot me and then had to redo it, and the machine was bleeping cos heart rate was dipping yet no one came when we called. It was awful.

At 4.30 we thought we could go home, but I had to be hooked back up again and they said I needed to see the consultant who would be along 'soon'. 5pm we were put in a hot room, no windows, bright lights etc just waiting for the consultant to do a scan...all the while panicking as all we had been told was the heart rate drops. Dh was sick, I nearly fainted...and the consultant turned up at 8.45pm and did a 1/2 minute scan....sooo bloody stressful. Really put me off going again tbh.

Daffodil/Melle I'm another one who has to have a bath rather than a shower. I shower about once a week with dh's help, but then have a bath every night.

Welcome original. Sorry you're going through this for a second time!!

Meerka · 25/05/2015 20:09

original hiya. Can you get your doc to prescribe you cyclizine immediately? it's the first line anti-emetic usually, it can be used with all the other meds (except promethezine, promethezine is an anti-histamine too, just stronger) and it does help quite a lot of people.

if you've been through it once you probably know the helpful hints ... wishing you strength Flowers

Amyyy27 · 25/05/2015 20:36

Penguin what a nightmare! Poor you and DH what a scary time, so glad baby is ok though. Sad and annoying l how bad you were looked after Flowers

Original welcome! Sorry you have had to come here though. But what a lovely bunch of ladies! I wish I had found them earlier Star

Amyyy27 · 25/05/2015 20:44

It's my birthday on Wednesday and I have hinted for months (well.. before the HG) I wanted OH to take me to this little museum set up as a town close to us, it's such an amazing place! Found out today he has got us tickets to spend the day there, and I'm worried sick :( I've had a very vomity day and back at work tomorrow so no time to even rest. I don't mind spending my birthday in bed ill, but I don't want to ruin what could have been a lovely day he has planned for us. Fingers crossed!!

Melleebacca · 25/05/2015 21:35

Amy! We share the same birthday! :) I know how you feel about being anxious. I'm concerned that if I do too much, I will start vomiting and I do not want that on my birthday! just do the absolute minimum on Tuesday, and take it slow on Wednesday. I will cross my fingers for you Smile

Amyyy27 · 25/05/2015 22:00

Ah Mellee what a coincidence! Hope you manage to have a lovely day! Unfortunately it's a double whammy tomorrow. I am having to come in to work as there will be no one else in, so undoubtedly busy day. Also we had a miscarriage last year and the baby would have been due tomorrow and I'm a very sensitive soul! So it will be weighing heavy on my mind. I may have to just go straight to bed after work, have a good cry and sleep through to Wednesday!

eallison88 · 25/05/2015 23:03

It was a very small festival (only 600 tickets) and I have spent today on the sofa napping and watching telly. But worth it. Glad its half term!

Blips are so demoralising, so sending positivity to those who are having bad days at the moment. The good days will come!

LucindaE · 26/05/2015 11:23

Welcome, congratulations and commiserations to Ofriginal. As others say, you being a veteran, you probably know all sorts of tips. Great advice from Meerka interesting that they started you on stemitel, not cyclazine. Everyone is different, but I swore by sips of flat coke, juice of tinned ruit, jelly and sometimes Lucozade and ice lollies, of course, sometimes made out of flat coke. Someone on here swore by liquidized and frozen melon andlilac found it soothing and of course, the chocolate milk shake drinks recommended by MotherofPearl and elizabethsmum. It's awful that if you can eat it at all it tends to be totally unhealthy stuff people click their tongues at...How are you today?
Happy Birthday in advance to Mellee and Any. Any Hugs about the due date from your miscarriage, I do symapthize, I remember the first one as the most upsetting, it does fade with time. Oh dear about combined birthday treat on Wednesday with having to work on Tuesday -I think they should have booked a temp. Did you say the doctor is willing to renew sick note? On the birthday trip, if you take one's standard 'kit' (how dismal it is going about with it} and make sure of location of loos, you might be able to cope.
Penguin I'm shocked at such insensitive treatment. I realise that the NHS is under a strain, but even so, there seems to have been a breakdown in communicaton. Things could have been done a lot better and I think when you yourself feel a bit better it's worth complaining. I think you have three years in which to do it, I used to know such things?
eallison Hugs. I'm so happy you had a good time.
Waves to all. Apologies if I've rudely ignored someone.

Thanks Lucinda They are willing to give me another sick note, but I'm conscious about the sick pay so have put the rest of this week in as holidays. If I'm still ill next week I'm going to have to suck it up and go on sick and just use our savings where needed! Yes I will have to prepare my standard HG kit tonight! I have checked the loos and there seem to be plenty around which is helpful. Hopefully I will have a good day tomorrow!
