I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

I'm freeeeeeee! Finished work for maternity leave today. Not back until next April Grin

LucindaE · 22/05/2015 16:55

Hello Wonderful news, I don't know how you battled on
Any Wonderful advice from Merkaand elizabethsmum Mother of Pearl and everyone. It does seem to be so complicated about ketones and how you can be dehydrated without having high ones. Quite worrying, as a lot of GP's unfortunately still tend to assume in the beginning that women with this are exaggerating about how bad the sickness is. I do hope you feel a bit better after resting today. I hope Penguin and lilac and everybody isn't too bad today.

yay hello- enjoy the rest!!!

glad that you are improving amy and lilac. try not to overdo it on trips out lilac. I was terrified of public disgrace but the thought of it is actually far worse than the actual 'event'Wink . caught out twice without any sort of receptical to hand- both times after bus journeys- although not my finest hr either time vomming in a gutter and behind rocks was not that bad- at least made it to open air! as long as you have plenty of bags/face wipes/mints you'll be ok. when I was well enough I always drove as well as it took my mind off nausea - had plenty of snacks to hand- and being a passenger in car was worse for me.

Think dizziness a combo of low bp and what meerka said!

waves to everyone. crosses fingers for continued improvements over the weekend.

Englishrose2000 · 22/05/2015 17:07

Hi I'm new here and suffering badly, I'm on some form of travel sickness tablets to help with my sickness but feel so rubbish all the time... Only 20 weeks to go :(

Penguinandminipenguin · 22/05/2015 17:20

Hi everyone :) That's great news hello! When are you due? :)
Amy How are you feeling this afternoon?
Welcome Englishrose Sorry you're suffering at the moment, what tablets are you on?

Englishrose2000 · 22/05/2015 17:24

I'm on PROMETHAZINE TEOCLATE, their travel sickness tablets ! They stop the sickness but still feel so unwell all the time :(

Fraggle31 · 22/05/2015 17:47

Hi ladies, I was just coming in to check on CaspianSea , but I can't see a post from her from the start of this new thread.....hope she's ok.

Hugs and gentle back pats to those that need then x

elizabethsmum · 22/05/2015 18:38

welcome to the thread englishrose sorry you are still suffering at 20 weeks. am sure meerka will be able to advise you better 're meds. it is good that vomiting under control but crippling nausea is horrible and difficult to get appropriate meds to sort unfortunately, however if you are suffering badly am sure that the Dr should be able to prescribe something stronger? are you eating/drinking a bit?

hi fraggle lovely to hear from you. Hope babyfraggle is doing well? haven't heard from caspian for a little while, which I always take as a good sign of improvement on this thread!

penguin - how are you doing today?

Englishrose2000 · 22/05/2015 19:31

The doc won't change my meds as they are making an improvement even though it's not a massive improvement !! I'm drinking loads of water as I have a horrid taste in my mouth constantly !! I can eat random food but dairy is a no as its instant vomiting x

Amyyy27 · 22/05/2015 20:02

Thanks ladies!

penguin a bit of vomiting throughout day but don't feel too bad. I've had excessive saliva all day which has encouraged the vomiting I think! I have no idea how to stop it.

LucindaE · 22/05/2015 20:25

Fraggle Helllo, how are things? We haven't heard from Csspainsea in a whole, and I do hope that means she's a lot better.
Englishrose Welcome, sorry as others saythat you are still suffering
l at twenty weeks, it may yet get a lot better. is it cyclazine you are on? I'm glad the sickness is a little under control, but the nausea is so miserable.
any I think that shows what rest can do, it's amazing.
Waves to lilacPenguin elziaethsmum Meerka and Motherof Pearl.

Meerka · 23/05/2015 09:52

Hi englishrose, sorry it's still so bad at 20 weeks :(

promethazine is pretty good actually but you can also take other meds with it that might help. Prochlorperazine is a good one to ask for and so is metoclopramide. Ondansetron is the most effective of all but it's very expensive so it's really hard to get it. It also bungs you up but that's relatively a small price compared to the nausea :s

All of those are on the NICE guidelines (NICE is the goverment's own body on medical best practise). Each works in a different way so they tackle the different causes of nausea

Can you take someone with you to advocate for you and say how disabling the nausea is? sometimes that weighs more heavily with doctors than just your own words Confused

sometimes though the bad news is that you never feel quite well .. sorry :/ Having said that, there's a chance that in 1 - 2 weeks' time you will feel notably better than now. There is often an improvement in HG / severe nausea and vomiting in preg around then.

amyy the saliva thing is awful isn't it. I used to spit down a straw into an empty drinks packet. If you can, it's a good idea not to spit too much actually as it encourages the production of more. But sometimes there's no choice! How are you today?

Hoping everyone is having a reasonably endurable day and that ealli is enjoying her weekend!

Amyyy27 · 23/05/2015 12:02

Thanks Meerka yes its horrendous! Still with me today but feeling better with all the rest I'm having x

LucindaE · 23/05/2015 14:18

Meerka I knew you would have great advcice on meds and any The horror, the horror of that saliva. Sympathies; I sucked barley sugar as it seemed connected with the foul taste, too, but again, that can lead to the production of more. Horrihbly, many have carried about a cup and spat into that. Meerkas method certainly sounds more sophisticated and tidy.
I hope people are surviving today...

Hello everyone it's so good to know I'm not alone!! I've been off work for two weeks so far and it looks like I'm heading for a 3rd. Got meds last week- Buccal tablets, which I think are a type of meds on that NICE list beginning with p :-) they didn't work, so I got cyclazine on Friday and was still throwing up with that too and was totally drowsy. It seems like nothing works!! I've taken heart though that people here say it's normal to have good and bad days. I had 2 good days last week and thought I was getting better then my stomach became a washing machine again :-/
I've got some lemonade ice lollies on order from tesco delivery today. Fingers crossed!
By the way this is my 1st pregnancy and I can't imagine ever doing this again- admiring of the people here who are doing this 2nd and 3rd time round!!

Amyyy27 · 24/05/2015 09:57

daffodil I think think they may be the same tablets I was on before and recently changed to cyclizine. Took 5-6 days to kick in but touch wood I'm onto my 2nd good day, although I won't take it for granted I know things can change quickly! Also FTM here and devastated as always wanted 2 kids but don't think I can go through is again nevermind with a child to look after too!

LilacWine7 · 24/05/2015 11:14

Hi Daffodil welcome to the thread, there's lots of support here. Sorry you're suffering! How far along are you? Cyclizine took a few days to make any difference for me. You're right about good days and bad days. I started getting some good days around 12 weeks, then re-lapsed, then had more good days than bad around 17-18 weeks, was doing quite well until 23weeks when re-lapsed again. Good news is re-lapses seem to get shorter over time and some people notice a big improvement around 20weeks. Hope the ice-lollies help! I find they're great when struggling with liquids, particularly Rowntrees Fruit Pastille lollies, Callipos, Rocket lollies and freezer-pops. I've tried all types, lemonade lollies were a bit sharp for me but I know lemon helps some people.

Amy how are you doing today? Any improvement?

I made it out of house yesterday!! Was nearly sick in car (after only being on road 5mins Blush) so we abandoned city centre plan and went to park instead. I felt very nauseous for first half an hour then nausea suddenly lifted, so we went to outdoor cafe then walked around park a bit more. It was nice being outside but I'd underestimated how drained and light-headed I'd feel... had to keep stopping to sit on benches like an old lady! Also developed pain in my right hip and lower back that was worse walking, so in end we just spread blanket on grass by car and sat in sun people-watching. Think i enjoyed that part most, knowing car was a few steps away and we could leave at any time! Almost sick in car on way home (managed to hold on until got through front door) then had violent vom-sessions all eve. Supposed to be going to city-centre today so hoping for a few nausea-free hours. Feel a bit disheartened after yesterday, didn't expect to find it so difficult or tiring! Sad

LucindaE · 24/05/2015 13:42

Just dashing on to welcome Daffodil too. Sorry you are suffering badly. I hope things start easing off for you soon as they do over time for so many. Only a few people suffer as badly throughout as in the first tri so do take heart. Mnay get massively better. I have heard it takes a few days for cyclazine to work as lilac and any say, so it might yet, but if it doesn't, don't hesitate to go back to ask for more meds or a combination as they can try various ones. Usual boring question, have you got kesostix for a good guide to dehydration (though not infallihble)? I found sips of flat coke and flat coke frozen into cubes helpful, and jelly and sips of the juice of tinned fruit (that is generally popular, but sadly doesn't work for everyone).
Waves to lilac and any. Thank goodness both feel not quite so foul.

Just popping on to say Hi and hope you are all having as best a day you can!

I'm having another good day although not quite as good as yesterday I won't complain! Just enjoying being able to drink as I am soo thirsty!

Lilac glad you managed to get out the house but such a shame it was so much effort and you were still poorly after :( hope you enjoyed your time out though!

Daffodil3228 · 24/05/2015 17:50

Hello Amy Lilac and Lucinda and all the other ladies who have cheered me up with your posts here! I'm 10 weeks in so it's quite early days. Thanks, I'll keep going with the cyclazine and see what happens. Lemonade ice lollies arrived and went down ok so I'm going to branch out and try other ones, and tinned peaches, I'll take any tip I can get!! I managed coke today too so feeling quite chuffed with myself Grin
I got keytones tested by midwife on Fri and she said there were none in there which is something. I've had a better day today and managed to get quite a lot of fluids in which will hopefully help.
Just wanted to say Lilac glad you were able to have a nice time in the outside world even with a few rest periods!! I went to the supermarket on the bus on Friday to pick up my medication by myself and felt very pleased with myself!
Just wanted to share too, I usually love food, probably a bit too much, and love chocolate! And it seems weird now that it's only dry toast and mashed potato that floats my boat. I woke up this morning from a detailed and enjoyable dream where I was just about to eat a bar of Cadburys fruit and nut. When I woke up of course I didn't want it Smile
Just wondered if anyone else has weird food dreams!!
Hope you are having as peaceful day as possible Xx

Meerka · 24/05/2015 18:25

in haste

lilac the park sounds very nice but do suggest that if you do something like that one day, ensure you have hte next day as a complete rest day. Almot everyone finds that they are pleased to have got out on the head-level but with HG, you feel rotten the day after physically. Plan for a rest day after any activity until you#re sure you're on the mend.

hi daffodil, amyyy and everyone

LilacWine7 · 24/05/2015 19:10

Daffodil I have vivid food dreams too... usually about eating cake Smile and i never feel sick in dreams. It's such a shame when you wake up and nausea returns! Hopefully you'll be able to enjoy chocolate again soon! I lived mainly on bland carbs in first trimester but found hot-chocolate drinks stayed down. When I have relapses I revert to very plain food (and ice-lollies!) but on good days can eat what I feel like. I find yogurt-drinks easier to keep down than liquids, ice-cream and blended-ice drinks can be soothing too.

Amy glad you're having a good day! Smile

LilacWine7 · 24/05/2015 19:22

Meerka you're right about needing rest day after a day out...we had to cancel today's plan as I was too tired and vomiting a lot. Also my hip and lower back have stiffened up, think I must have strained something going up lots of steps yesterday!

Ems10000 · 24/05/2015 20:29

Hi ladies, after a few slightly improved weeks thanks to ondansetron I have had an awful few days. I've spend most of my time in bed with constant headaches and nausea and ive been violently sick in the evenings. Very frustrating when i thought i was getting better. I'm going abroad in just over 2 weeks and starting to dread it. I will be 16 weeks on friday, just hooing things improve soon. Hope everyone else is doing ok

MotherofPearl · 24/05/2015 23:21

Just dashing on to welcome Daffodil. Sorry you're suffering. I wonder if you, or any other current sufferers, especially chocolate fans, find ice cold chocolate Nesquik milk helpful. I found it generally good, or else cold choc flavoured soya milk. Never things I drink in normal non-HG life!
Hope everyone has had a reasonable day and can enjoy the Bank Hol a little tomorrow. I wonder how Eallison got on with her weekend away?
Cheery waves to all!
