When is too early to buy stuff?

When does everyone start to buy stuff? My husband is already buying stuff. We have 3 bags of clothes and he wants to go and look at pushchairs etc this weekend. I'm excited but I want to wait till after the 12 week scan. Xxx

A lot of people wait until after 20 wk scan. I personally can't remember with dc1. Probably around then also.

Whenever feels right for you, go and look at things. Your DH is just excited. It's lovely.

Chickenfillets · 10/03/2015 16:06

We bought the pram before our 12 week scan because we just couldn't wait! Grin We then started buying everything else straight after. Now 31 weeks and finally got everything we need and nothing more to worry about Smile I say start whenever you like, it's your choice.

ElphabaTheGreen · 10/03/2015 16:10

I didn't go near a baby shop of any description until I'd had the twenty week scan. I'm not superstitious, but I was terrified of getting myself all excited and buying things only to discover that there was something terribly wrong and I'd be faced with looking at or returning all these things I'd never use.

Conversely, a work colleague had the baby's nursery painted and decorated three days after she got her BFP. I was aghast Grin

I'm now in the process of selling all of those things I put off buying as they have now been well-used by all the babies I'm going to have Smile

I had a private sexing scan at 18 weeks and started buying stuff from then :) got a few little clothes bits before then, but bulk of stuff has been from 18 weeks.

Mainly bought stuff when I have seen it on offer or in the sale, am now 28+6 and have pretty much everything I need

natjayne213 · 10/03/2015 16:28

I've told him no more... we kept nothing from our daughter so we need to start again. I shall tell him to hold on and wait.

He is like a kid in a sweet shop he so excited.. he has started telling people as he just cannot wait any longer xxx

I bought a snow suit after the 20 week scan then nothing until after 30 weeks. But there's no set time when it's ok to buy things, just do it when you're ready! Obviously you know the risk of things going wrong are higher before 12 weeks so for that reason I wouldn't make any major purchases until then but it's entirely up to you.

Started after 12 week scan and then got serious after 20 weeks. DH who isn't normally even a bit superstitious wouldn't let us take the pram home until DD was born though- it stayed at my parents until she was home. He said he had read something saying it was unlucky.

squizita · 10/03/2015 16:48

I waited till after my 20 week scan.

However I'm an unusual case as I have recurrent miscarriage issues (do not worry these are rare!). Hence a lot of caution.
But my case is v rare.

I think most regular folk it's after the 12 week scan.

weeblueberry · 10/03/2015 16:57

I waited until 20 weeks but that was mainly because that was when the January sales started! Also I'm really impatient and if I'd bought everything at the start it would have felt like a looooooong nine months until the baby arrived!

Scotinoz · 10/03/2015 16:58

I'm hugely superstitious. I reluctantly ordered a pram at about 30 weeks, and then nothing else til about 36 wks. I remember being in the baby store and crying as we bought a car seat etc incase something happened and we had no baby to bring home. Drove my husband nuts!

32wks with baby 2, and it's fairing only marginally better...

GlitzAndGigglesx · 10/03/2015 17:00

I bought bottles at 16w because they were on offer and have been looking at car seats but don't have space to store them just yet. I'm nearly 20w so will be buying more within the next 8 weeks just so I'm not panicking nearer the time

WindYourBobbinUp · 10/03/2015 17:07

After 20 weeks for me, because if things had gone badly I wouldn't have wanted all that stuff around. It's really what you feel comfortable with OP.

By the way, 3 bags of clothes sounds like a lot! Again, up to you completely but babies grow fast and need very little. I have friends who've bought so many outfits many went to the charity shop unworn.

DayLillie · 10/03/2015 17:11

I bought most of my stuff after I went off on mat leave at 36wks. It was a bit late, TBH, coz I was too knackered.

My mother bought stuff early on that I didn't really want but felt stuck with.

I didn't want to buy stuff too early on, in case I got bored with it or found something I liked better Grin

It is worth buying seasonal stuff earlier, like snow suits, because you cannot always buy them when you want them. Shops still stay very seasonal (too far in advance) and babies grow at the wrong rate.

WindYourBobbinUp · 10/03/2015 17:16

DayLillie has reminded me - I too was going to get my stuff when on mat leave, but I gave birth at 35 weeks whilst still at work (not actually in the office luckily). I had some stuff ready and family and friends sorted the rest. There's definitely a window!

Matilda30 · 10/03/2015 18:14

I bought my first baby book at the weekend, and I'm 12 weeks, my partner also got one, Commando Dad. Anyone read it? it's fab :) not getting anything else until at least after my first scan

Sparrowlegs248 · 10/03/2015 18:28

I have bought a few bits in the aldi baby event, really not much at all. Each grandmother has bought a set of clothes. I have my 20wk scan tomorrow and all being well, am going hopping Friday!!!

Sparrowlegs248 · 10/03/2015 18:30

shopping!

SycamoreMum · 10/03/2015 18:32

Its never too early.

I was waiting until I had enough money saved up to go on a complete weekend spending spree. The very first day off work, ( I took the Friday off so I could have three days shopping) I was admitted to hospital and I gave birth 13 weeks early.

I had absolutely nothing for my baby!!! So buy essentials like vests, bibs, nappies, wipes etc etc.

Congrats by the way! Smile

Pasithea · 10/03/2015 18:35

My husband won't let me buy anything till the baby is born and we know it's ok. His third grandchild is due. Im itching been in toys r us , debenhams, mother care. And the next catalogue. Thing is we're supposed to be buying a cot and pram.

Ztastic · 10/03/2015 18:43

We bought our pram at around 14 weeks as it was on offer, it's been stored up in our loft to keep superstition at bay. I haven't bought anything else as it's my dc3 hoping to acquire some second hand stuff from friends as it's so pricey to buy everything new....although I do love shopping so won't be able resist the odd splurge.

eurochick · 10/03/2015 18:45

I couldn't quite believe I might actually end up with a baby after 3 years ttc and 4 rounds of ivf so not until close to 30 weeks. And then I had her at 34.

WilsonWilsonWoman · 10/03/2015 20:21

Bought a couple of minor bits: pack of sleepsuits and some nappies after the 20 week scan but 31 weeks now and just starting to but the serious items.

trilbydoll · 10/03/2015 20:25

I feel like pregnancy lasts about 100 years anyway, the last thing I want to do is buy stuff I can't wait to use - it would make it go even slower!

DD had about 8 items of clothing when she was born, DH went on a shopping spree while I was still in hospital. He loved it!

flamingtoaster · 10/03/2015 20:37

I was very superstitious (very lucky to get pregnant, nearly miscarried) so refused to buy anything. Six weeks before my DS was due my DH took me to stand outside Mothercare and said that either I could go in and buy the basics or he would do it unsupervised the following Monday. I went in and bought the bare minimum.
