baby weight predictions - how accurate have they been??

Hi all,

I had my 34 week app today. My last three apps I was measuring big on the bump graph. I asked today for babys weight prediction, if I went full term they suggest 8lbs 6oz and a long baby.

I'm 5ft, husband is 5"6', so both shorties. I was 4lb when born and hubby about 6 lb.

So just for noseyness sake, how accurate have your predictions been?

I was told 8lb 13 at 40+6. He was born at 40+12 weighing about 8lb 2.

My OB maintains he works with a 10% margin Hmm He guess-timated 4kg for my 1st, she was 3.63kg. He's guess-timated 4kg again for my 2nd, but I'll have to wait and see.

Mine was super accurate: prediction of between 8 and 8 1/4 lbs and a long baby and came out as 8 lb 3 oz and 21". I was very impressed. DH's birthweight was somewhere around 7 lb 6 oz and mine was 8 lb 6 oz.

Prediction was 10lb, reality was 6lb 7oz (38 weeks)

I didn't have a weight prediction but my bump was always measuring pretty much bang on 50th percentile; DD was on the 47th when born and has tracked it ever since (now 16 weeks).

I was always above the top line on the graph by at least 1-2cm when pregnant. My midwife refused to say when i asked how heavy she thought dd would be. Saying it's not all baby. I was 7lb 2 dh 8lb 3, our dd was 8lb 9. When visiting us at home midwife smiled and said I knew she would be a fair size but didn't want to scare you.

Terrible. They gave me a section because they said dd1 could be 10lb 13 and because of my small frame they said it would be dangerous for me to labour. She was 8lb 6oz.

I ignored all predictions with the next two. Pointless guesstimation disguised as medical and scientific diagnosis.

I was estimated 7.5lbs with DS1. He was 9.11!

DS2 was "only" 9.2, he was my tiny baby! Although I didn't have a predicted weight for him, a consultant who examined me thought 9lb plus by feel.

Ha! told 7.5lb girl...9lb boy!

I was measuring small at 34 weeks, sent for a growth scan and was told I would have a 5-6lb-er, he came out 8/13!! So, not very accurate imo!!

Not so accurate. Was told DS1 would be 8-8.5 lbs, he was 6lbs14. Was told 6lbs for DS2, he was 6lbs15.
Just so you know, babies birth weight/length isn't necessarily and indicator of their adult weight/height. My sister and her partner are both on the shorter side of things, me and my DH are both pretty tall. Our eldest baby was much smaller than theirs but has bith babies approached toddlerhood their heights became more in keeping with their genes.
So you could have a 8lbs odd long baby that will still be more like you and your DP when older.

Was told DS would be around 8lb, he was born 10.4lb

Was told ds would be around 8lb-had a scan at 30 weeks as I was measuring 2cm large. He came out 6lb5oz- that's the 9th centile so I have to have an extra growth scan with this pregnancy.

They said around '7 and a half' with DS1, he was 7lb 7oz
With DS, they just said 'bigger than ds1' and he was 9lb 2oz

Was told 10lbs. Baby was 6lbs 8oz. They might as well just pull a number out of the air.

I was told around 6lb for DS2. I went out and bought the small clothes.... He was 8lb. Sigh

Estimated 6 lb for ds, 9lb. Estimated by scan 9lb 6 for dd on morning of induction, 7lb 11.
Would say not to take notice really as majority of people I know were misinformed.

Told just under 7lbs, I had a 8lb8oz beast. I am tiny. The midwife couldn't believe it, her shocked face is one of my clearest memories, weirdly. And explains why the beggar took so long to come out!

I was measuring small and was told she was 5lb at a scan. Was born a week later at 4lb 13oz.

Report
DreamPhone · 05/03/2015 00:46

I measured small so was sent for a growth scan. They estimated 7.5lb, DD was 5.7lb so not particularly accurate! Not really a surprise to me though as my bump just felt so small - still measuring 34 cm at 40 weeks.

Report
Strokethefurrywall · 05/03/2015 00:55

OBGYN said 6 1/2 pounds - as DS1 emerged he said "yes, this one is 6 1/2 pounds" - when weighed he was 6lb 5oz exactly.
DS2 was guesstimated at "6lbs maybe less" - arrived at 38weeks at 6lb 1oz - the man should take bets!
