Reasons for high HCG levels (and a BFP) at 8dpo?

worksallhours · 23/02/2015 12:55

Yep ... I got a BFP at 8dpo, 10 dpo, and 12 dpo. I am now about 5+4, and most definitely pregnant.

But I am bothered over the fact I got a BFP so early. It's not even supposed to be possible to get a BFP at 8dpo. We only dtd on two occasions in the conceiving cycle, so I know the first BFP date was 8dpo ... and there is no chance I conceived prior to this date.

Does anyone know why my HCG levels could have been so high so early on?

Multiple birth.

Heels99 · 23/02/2015 12:59

Posted too soon sorry, my levels were high and increasing when I was gp with twins.

Allstoppedup · 23/02/2015 13:00

I've seen a few threads online where people have got a positive at 8dpo.

Some people have high levels early on, or high levels can be a sign of multiples!

I wouldn't worry too much but if you are nervous ask your midwife at your booking in appointment.

Number3cometome · 23/02/2015 13:01

It is possible that you ovulated early. I wouldn't be concerned.

Showy · 23/02/2015 13:03

I tested positive at 8/9dpo and had singletons.

It could be a multiple pregnancy. It could be that you're further along (as in pregnant from last cycle, not this one but for some reason it's only coming up now and your last period wasn't actually a period). It can sometimes be due to certain other fairly rare factors.

Unless you have a window into your uterus (honestly, evolution missed a trick there), there's no real way of knowing.

SparklyReindeerShit · 23/02/2015 13:16

I'm not convinced you can know exactly the date you conceived. You could have ovulated early, the sperm from dtd can hang around quite a while. There's a few explanations why you got a bfp at 8dpo. I think 7dpo is the earliest I've heard of.

Cornberry · 23/02/2015 13:26

Can I just share something I just discovered - my sister is 6 weeks pregnant and had an early scan where she was told she had ovulated twice that month. We'd never heard of this but I looked it up and apparently it's quite common. I think this would explain lots of date mix ups. Don't forget that sperm can survive a few days before fertilising the egg when it's released. I wouldnt worry. Hardly anyone's dates add up in the end!

worksallhours · 23/02/2015 13:52

Hi all ... thank you for your comments. Smile

I am taking the first DTD date as the very earliest I could have conceived; it is this date that puts the first BFP at 8dpo. Going by past experience (and my historical chart data), I probably would have ovulated the following day, which would make the BFP date 7dpo -- and that just seems silly.

There's no way I conceived in the prior cycle or the one before that, unless I am the Virgin Mary. Grin

I guess I am just very jumpy because my last pregnancy was riddled with a sequence of complications that are pretty rare to experience in the way I did (we lost the baby at 23 weeks). I just don't want these high HGC levels to be a sign that I am heading for another similiar experience.

Was it a sensitive test and how dark was the line. I got very very light pink positives at 8dpo. I know exactly when I ovulated due to three things, my temp charts, opk sticks and ovulation cramps.

Number3cometome · 23/02/2015 14:06

Try not to worry OP - I got a BFP at 10dpo.

You may well be carrying multiples or just have higher levels early on.

Levels are done in ranges, so you may just be in the upper range.

worksallhours · 23/02/2015 14:07

Peony ... not really. It was a Tesco own brand. I think they measure 25mIU. Aren't Asda tests something like 15mIU?

The line was pretty faint at 8dpo, but strengthened substantially by 10dpo. Indeed, the 10dpo line was the same strength as my 14dpo line in my previous pregnancy (I kept the strip Blush).

I just wonder if my baseline might have increased for some reason, and what that reason could be.

Could you be a further month along?

worksallhours · 23/02/2015 14:21

number ... not a chance. Grin

I am very nervous about the possibility of a multiple -- and there is a chance I may have ovulated twice in that cycle. It would shoot my already high-risk, consultant-led pregnancy into "oh, shit" territory. I don't know if we could cope with the stress of a multiple pregnancy after what happened last time. I just can't see how I would go full term.

So you have only had sex once in the last two months, and that was 8 days ago?

WhereIsMyFurryHat · 23/02/2015 14:42

I have had BFPs that early with 2/4 pregnancies. All singletons.

Congratulations.

Showy · 23/02/2015 14:43

By 10dpo, I was testing positive very clearly. And faintly at 8/9dpo. I know exactly when I conceived as like you I only had sex once that month and I know when I'm ovulating anyway. Like I said, singleton pregnancies only.

Number3, the op is 5+4 now and tested positive at 8dpo, 10dpo and 12dpo.

Number3cometome · 23/02/2015 14:47

Showy thanks!

Well I would say it is right then OP and nothing to worry about.

I tested positive at 10dpo, but I guess if i had tested a day or two before it could also have been a BFP

I know you have had a tragic experience before, but please don't worry yourself unnecessarily Flowers

Choccywoccydodah · 23/02/2015 15:20

I got a line at 3dpo, go figure!!
I got a smiley on CB digi ov test on the Tuesday cd18 (tested every day for 10 days and had blank circles, even wrote to CB telling them their tests were a pile of shite) then bfp on the Saturday! Then got darker from then on. I cracked open the FRER the following friday and got a nice line.
I don't know what went on with my cycle as I ALWAYS get a + ov dip stick on cd14, which was the friday before my CB, but even so, I still would have only been 7dpo :)
But high hcg has no relevance on multiples either, I've been told that by a professional as I asked it too.

neversleepagain · 23/02/2015 17:08

I got bfp at 9dpo. We only DTD once that month so I was certain on conception date. My twins are 2.5 Grin

worksallhours · 23/02/2015 21:00

Thank you for all your responses!

I guess all I can do is wait and see.

MuddyWellyNelly · 23/02/2015 21:28

Remember that DtD is not necessarily the same as conception date. Normally it's the other way around (sperm can live up to 5 days); but the egg can kick around for up to 24 hours, so you could have actually ovulated the day before the first DtD date, this would make you 9DPO.

Choccywoccy, 3DPO? It takes 5 days to get to blastocyst stage with implantation anywhere from 6DPO. 7DPO is pretty early, 3 is impossible! I suspect you just missed the LH surge. :)

Christelle2207 · 23/02/2015 22:54

I got bfp at 9dpo. Didn't try at 8. Son now 18m. CongratsSmile

Choccywoccydodah · 24/02/2015 07:53

I got a smiley on the Tuesday Muddy, no smiley before, positive on the saturday, hospital won't date me before my smiley. I don't understand it either! In the 18 months we've tried ive ALWAYS got a + on cd14, yet the digi was cd18, and I've caught 9 times, lost 8 (Currently preg with 9th, this one feels a lot different) :) So I was maximum 7dpo.

Showy · 24/02/2015 09:53

Choccywoccy, it's quite easy to miss a surge when looking for ovulation. You can test every day and get blanks, but still ovulate. I think it's highly likely that you ovulated earlier than you think (probably only by a few days). If you missed ovulation and it did indeed occur on day 14 as usual, that would have been the previous Friday and then you tested positive over a week later on the Saturday. That puts your bfp at 8dpo which is much more plausible than testing positive at 4dpo which is almost certainly impossible. At the point that you got the smiley, I suspect that was the hcg being picked up or an unrelated surge (either of which can happen with ov sticks). Regardless, congratulations and all best wishes for a healthy pregnancy. It's pretty amazing that just a week after conception we can know that it has occurred.

Faithope · 24/02/2015 10:13

When you say high HCG levels-are you going by the strength of the line on the HPT? As the only way to 'know' that it is possible multiples, is to have two BHCG blood tests, 48 hours apart.

I had a long 56 day cycle and my body tried to ovulate twice, a week apart. I can tell you the night I conceived as I feel ovulation (this is what happens when you try for a baby for 10 years..). The doctor insisted I go by LMP which is ridiculous as it meant I found out I was pregnant 4 days after conception, impossible.

I had BHCG bloods done, the first being 454 the second 1388. This indicated it could be multiples as this is quite high. I have one baby on board. HPts at 4+2 were VERY strong, as in the test line was much stronger than the control line. As my picture shows :)
A blood test and scan will tell you everything. Congratulations :)
