I am 7 weeks 2 days pregnant and have my first early scan tomorrow for a heartbeat (or beats they put two back!).

I have generally been feeling pregnant, cramps, very tired, boobs have got bigger and hurt plus a little bit of nausea when I wake and constant trips to the toilet but even with all these symptoms I am still worried about the scan tomorrow that there won't be anything there or no heartbeat.

Can anyone give me some guidance on what to expect at the scan tomorrow please (plus some sucess stories!) thanks x

Hi B&WC, thanks for asking. Scan went well, despite being convinced that there would be nothing there, we saw a little blob and a heartbeat (anroga you were right!) We were both in total shock yesterday, think it's still sinking in. Now need to get a midwife as have been released from the clinic back into the world! Scared!
Not sure I'll be able to take the next 5 week wait to the 12 week scan (ridiculous as that sounds after just having a scan yesterday) so my next but of advice seeking from your kind ladies is - who had private scans between 7-12 wks? Worth it? There is a Babybond centre 20 mins from where I live so was thinking of booking there...

Fabuluce · 06/05/2015 08:48

Morning all and congrats to the newly BFP'd! Starfish I'd definitely recommend getting an extra scan in for reassurance. I decided to have the Harmony test and the Fetal Medicine Centre in Harley St does a £400 bundle of 10 week scan, Harmony blood test, Nuchal blood test and 12 week Nuchal Test (it was a good half hour and extremely thorough). Not cheap but given what it's testing for and the fact that you get a reassurance scan as well I would recommend it.

Cups, so exciting that you're in the home straight!

I'm now at 14+4 and have my first hospital appointment today - not sure what will happen! I think it's just to register me with the consultant care.

anroga · 06/05/2015 12:48

Great news St4fish- I hate to say I told you so but I told you so! Ha ha! Its an amazing feeling isn't it. I had my 7 week scan with my private clinic which I had to pay extra for even though we had shelled out over £6k for treatment (still will never understand that!) and then at the same time I booked to have a 10 week scan with them as I could not wait until the 12 week scan with the NHS and my dh agreed. Again I had to pay for it
(£150-00 a time) but it was well worth every penny for the peace of mind. Plus you then only have a couple of weeks or so until your next scan.

I word of advice I would get in touch with your gp/midwife ASAP to arrange your booking in appointment as I left it until after my 10 week scan when I was discharged from my clinic and my midwife messed me around so much I was too late to have the nuchal scan etc, it all worked out in the end but it was alot of added stress I did not need.

I am patiently counting down the days until my 20 week scan, I am just the same as you even though I heard the heartbeat last week with the GP I still worry!

Great news on the scan St4rfish, it must be such a relief. Mine is booked for the 1st June so reckon I'll be somewhere between 8 - 9 weeks then. I've just tried to book an early scan next week privately but as I will be on the cusp of 6 weeks they said they couldn't guarantee that they'd see anything. We're on holiday the week after so by the time we get back from that it will only be another week to wait. I will just have to trust my body on this one.

I must admit to stalking the BESH conception thread for a while so saw you get your BFP Fab Smile

Is it worth getting a list together of everyone on this thread so we can see where everyone is up to? Here are my stats as a starter for ten:

Gillster, 41, TTC 3 years, 2 embies transferred via a FET (2DT) 16 April, BFP 28 April. Scan 1st June. EDD late Dec/early Jan.

Blackandwhitecat3 · 06/05/2015 19:30

Gillster I'm so rude, I didn't even say hello (waves). A v good idea to have some introductions.

Me: Cat, 39, 2 5-day blasts transferred 25 April, BFP 3 May (they've been a long four days!). Scan 26 May.

Today's worry/obsession: I did my official test today from the clinic, I could only imagine a line just before the 3 minutes and then could see one after the 3 mins. Line as much fainter than the one I got on Sunday with a FRER. The test from the clinic was one of those ones with a well and a pipette.

Question: are the clinic test kits less sensitive than a FRER? I'm clearly trying not to panic here. Clinic said to test again on Friday.

Carrots are the latest food item to come off the menu.

Starfish congrats on seeing your bean for the first time. So exciting!

whittlefish · 06/05/2015 20:05

Congratulations st4rfish it's amazing to see something isn't didn't quite feel real even at my 12 week scan. Think it's only now I can feel it that it's sinking in. I didn't pay for any extra scans we were very lucky to get it funded so only took what was offered on NHS must say I'm the worlds most impatient person but manage to make it too 12 weeks..just lol. It's quite nice now to be having extra growth scans tho at 28 and 34 weeks as extra reassurance and extra chances to see her

Gillster · 06/05/2015 21:16

Cat did you do another FRER today too? I don't think you can compare the results of different tests as the sensitivity changes and even batches of the same test can be different. I've trawled through a lot of threads over the last few days and have seen a few postings where people have used different tests and got different results. If you're still getting a line on your FRER then you're still pregnant.

Why are you worried about eating carrots, is it the vitamin A? I've done some research into this and vitamin A from beta-carotene is fine (I.e. Carrots) but vitamin A from retinol (I.e. Liver) is not. Not sure if you've been taking one of the multi vitamin conception or pregnancy vitamins but beta carotene is listed as an ingredient in Pregnacare and the Seven Seas ones.

Blackandwhitecat3 · 06/05/2015 21:43

Hi Gill no only FRER was Sunday, decent, though faint line - that's the strongest one I've had. Monday and Tuesday faint line (and Monday's was in the afternoon). Today with clinic kit no line until 3 mins, then faint line which got a bit stronger (instructions say not to read after 3 mins) quickly followed by a TESCO cheapie with an immediate but faint line.

Trying not to obsess. I'm pretty sure the TESCO ones are less sensitive than the sainsbury ones because s say up to 4d before AF and TESCO say day AF due.

I'm all out of tests now so will buy some more tomorrow, clinic recommended Clearblue. As I'm totally obsessing managing to stay relaxed and clear-headed about everything I'm sure I will buy FRER too!

Ha ha just re-read all that. Totally obsessed lol.

The carrots, oh, I'm pretty nauseous already. Garlic was bad by Sunday, yesterday flavoured yoghurt tasted of chemicals and this morning I had a problem with shampoo (may need to find some unperfumed hair products). Lunchtime today I nearly retched over a carrot, so they're now off the menu. Noting to do with vit A! So I guess I am pregnant then....

Gillster · 06/05/2015 23:27

Sounds like it to me Cat and possibly twins given how nauseous you are already. I used Superdrug tests, as a fraction of the price of a FRER but the same sensitivity - 10units (can't remember the units). Think the CB ones are 25units.

This is the picture I took 12 days after transfer. I did another test on Monday (18 days after) and the line was darker.

Feel free to obsess. Totally obsessing over here too!

I am 7 weeks 2 days and have my early scan tomorrow (got pregnant through first time ICSI) I am so worried!
anroga · 07/05/2015 10:26

Hello to the new members that have joined our group, hope you find it as helpful as I have so far.

I am no 18+3 and for the last week have been having alot more feelings in my stomach, strecthing, twinges, slight cramps, it generally feeling uncomfortable and just wondered if Whittle, Ruby you have experienced this, none of it feels like the baby moving yet (from what I have read it feels like a quickening, fluttering etc) but I just assume it is everything growing including the baby!

NO severe cramping or bleeding though.

Wish this 20 week scan would hurry up!

OP posts:
whittlefish · 07/05/2015 13:08

Yeah I had the same not really movements but felt like everything was stretching had some mild cramping but didn't last long. I must say my first movements felt more like twitching or spasms to me and even still now it sometimes feels like that.

anroga · 07/05/2015 13:12

Oh thanks for the quick reply Whittle that has instantly put my mind at rest. I suppose it is to be expected at this stage but you can't help but worry can you! Can't wait to feel the actual movement, thought I did last night but wasn't sure.

Hope your doing ok x

whittlefish · 07/05/2015 17:36

I'm good 26 weeks on Saturday! Feels like it's going quick but not at the same time already can't wait to stop working starting to get tired easily again.
gillster not sure how those tests work as they are all different (some have a cross for positive) but if a line means pregnant then I think that's a very definitely line.

St4rfish · 08/05/2015 00:29

Thanks for the congrats everyone, feeling tentatively more optimistic... Am happy to accept an 'I told you so' anroga! Have taken on board people's suggestions that another scan would be a good idea and booked a private one for 2 weeks' time when I'll be nearly 10 weeks. Have had a right faff trying to get a midwife appointment though, had to ring about 5 different numbers and no one seemed to be able to tell me what to do/where to go (they do a pre-booking session here where you are given your notes to take away and fill in and only then make your first midwife appt) - going to this on Sunday. Feeling a bit vulnerable after being discharged from IVF clinic and left to fend for myself so soon!

Gil and Cat hope you're both ok with your line obsessing! I only did 2 tests at home, although I did use one of those week indicator ones to see if it changed to 2-3 weeks etc. Cat can you ask for a blood test to get an accurate HCG result to put your mind at ease?

My stats by the way are: Star, 36, TTC 4 years, one 5-day blastocyst transferred 5 April (first IVF cycle), BFP 14 April, EDD 23 December. Next scan date 23 May.

St4rfish · 08/05/2015 00:30

Actually just realised that transfer date of mine was actually 31 March, not 5 April! Longer ago than it seems!

Blackandwhitecat3 · 08/05/2015 06:37

I got a stronger line this morning. I can finally call it a bFp Smile Going to stop obsessing now!

Blackandwhitecat3 · 08/05/2015 06:38

Oh and my due date will be around 10th Jan. I can't believe how far away that is!

anroga · 08/05/2015 11:05

Glad to hear your doing well Whittle apart from the tiredness, I know what you mean I am more tired in this second trimester than my first! 26 weeks wow its flying by!

St4rfish again I am so pleased for you, its such a great feeling and I am glad you have decided to book another one for around 10 weeks its so worht it!

I felt still do really just the same after being discharged from my private clinic. The only advice I can give you is if they keep fobbing you off or are as vague as my midwifery team has been you have to just keep pestering them and being a nuisance - we have all gone through so much to get here I am not being messed around now! They probably have a dartboard with my name on it that they use at lunchtime for dart practice now!

OP posts:
RubySlippers77 · 08/05/2015 17:06

I think I've been lucky to see so much of my antenatal team - I still have to cope with the NHS vagueness about when/ how the bookings will be made for the important stuff like our 20 weeks scan but because of my high blood pressure, I'm at the clinic pretty much every week! Went yesterday and was told my bp was too high, had to stay in for hours and wait for the increased medication to take effect Sad still, it meant I had today off work, which was nice.

Congratulations Cat, a New Year baby for you!!

Whittle and anroga, I'm tired as well in my second trimester; not as bad as the first but I still can't think of staying up much past 10pm! Also getting quite breathless, I think because my boobs are so big now and I'm not doing all the exercise I used to. Must find a new (enormous) sports bra and maternity swimming costume so I can start pregnancy yoga and swimming…..

My stats are: Ruby, 38, TTC 2 years, 2 5 day blastocysts transferred 8 February (first ICSI), BFP 19 Feb, EDD 27 October.

Gillster · 08/05/2015 21:24

Because I have nothing better to do, I'd thought I'd do a little summary of where everyone is at. Please feel free to annotate the list if I've got anything wrong or add yourself on if you've been missed off. I've also tried to do it in date order:

Whittlefish, 25+6, EDD mid August
Anroga, TC over 3 years, BFP from 1st ICSI, 18+4, EDD early Oct
Ruby, 38, TTC 2 years, 2 5 day blastocysts transferred 8 February (first ICSI), BFP 19 Feb, 15 weeks EDD 27 October.
Fab, 14+6, EDD end Oct
Star, 36, TTC 4 years, one 5-day blastocyst transferred 5 April (first IVF cycle), BFP 14 April, EDD 23 December. Next scan date 23 May.
Gillster, 41, TTC 3 years, 2 embies transferred via a FET (2DT) 16 April, BFP 28 April. EDD early Jan. Scan 1st June.
Cat, 39, 2 5-day blasts transferred 25 April, BFP 3 May. EDD 12 Jan. Scan 26 May

RubySlippers77 · 09/05/2015 13:55

Thank you Gillster Grin mine is exactly right, although as we're having twins the EDD may come forward….. especially if the little ones take after my OH, who was 10lb at birth!!

Forgot to say anroga, I've felt movements as well; all the baby books say it'll start about 18 weeks with the 'fluttering' but mine's more like a squirmy tummy, just in the wrong place. Sometimes it feels like the babies are turning cartwheels! I wasn't sure if I was feeling it more/ earlier because there's two of them to wriggle?

Been to a table top baby stuff sale today. Got some good stuff but my goodness it was hard work, I think the 'no prams' rule at NCT sales is a good one, we could hardly move at this one for tripping over a pushchair!

Fabuluce · 09/05/2015 17:33

That's right Gillster and thank you! Also, I'm 42, TTC for over 4 years, ivf#3, 2 2-day embies transferred. Gosh, you must have seen the drama unfold if you were lurking then with the BFN followed by the total shocker of the BFP 3 days later. I'm so glad that time has passed!

Viasabat · 09/05/2015 17:51

Congratulations!
We had icsi after 7 years of ttcing. I wS panicking about my scan. It was all fine and I now have an 18 month old DD. We are about to start icsi again. Hope all goes well.

ejclementine · 09/05/2015 18:48

Hi everyone, I hope it's okay to post in here. I'm 6 weeks now and I really would like an early scan for reassurance. Is there much difference between what you see on a 7 week scan compared to an 8 week scan? Just curious as to whether I ought to wait to the 8th week. Thank you

Blackandwhitecat3 · 10/05/2015 11:13

Welcome clementine and congrats on your BFP.

Anyone else having trouble not telling people? We have told both sets of parents and I have told the friends who knew I was doing ivf (3) plus one friend at work. But I nearly keep forgetting to keep it a secret from everyone else, as my mind is thinking of little else at the moment!
