I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

medical bods!!

Skiptonlass · 04/03/2015 20:18

Hi meerka. I have stopped. Hubs saw me shaking and pointed it out. Called our friend who is a poison / drug hotline pharmacist and she says it's the caffeine and ephedrine. Nothing harmful, just feels unpleasant.

penguin, if you're like most women, you hate being signed off sick unless you have a limb hanging off or ebola. I understand. My boss is an unsympathetic mare but I feel so bad that if they sign me off, I'm taking it. I was useless today. Couldn't concentrate at all, retching into a bucket half the time... Honestly I'm a liability. My job is stressful but I don't know how people manage if they have physically demanding jobs. You're all super women.

Hugs to all. Hang on in there.

Meerka · 04/03/2015 20:24

penguin metoclopramide is fine for the baby. Occasionally the baby's mother can get a reaction and if you do it's important to go back to your doc, with metoclopramide. But the baby will be absolutely fine.

the thing is with meds is that actually generally they are safer than dehydration.

It doesn't matter if you are "officially" HG or not, if you're seriously nauseous or vomitting the goal is to keep you functioning as normally as possible, according to the Government\s body that deals with illness. mother Hen put the guidelines up above, under the NICE guidelines (copy paste the link and it should work). Better to make sure that it doesnt get as far as HG!

elizabethsmum · 04/03/2015 21:47

Blimey the thread is busy at the moment! ! Welcome to all new comers- everyone is very welcome to join this thread please no one should feel like a fraud! feel free to ask for advice!

hex cyclizine is an anti - histamine hence why you are feeling drowsy. it is a first line medication so if the side effects are out-weighing the benefits then there are plenty of other medication options to consider.

littlemiss I have suffered hg in a singleton and a twin pregnancy. I was absolutely exhausted before I even had a positive test in the twin pregnancy. hg was much much more intense at the start as well. your gp sounds very unhelpful- vomiting that much is not normal- is there anyone else at the practice you can see?

sorry to be brief will try and pop back tomorrow x

elizabethsmum · 04/03/2015 21:49

somesunny I remember you very well! congratulations and thanks so much for coming back to share your wonderful news!

Littlemiss20 · 05/03/2015 10:42

Thanks elizabethsmum to be honest I don't know them well at the practice as the serm to change gps very often and I never know who is who. There is one good doctor but I'm unsure if he is still around. X

eallison88 · 05/03/2015 10:57

Might be worth asking if there is a gp with specific interest in women's heath... might be starting point!

LucindaE · 05/03/2015 10:58

LittleMiss20 Welcome, it's too much to expect to work at a demanding job like nursing with this - and it sounds as if you had untreated Hypeemesis before even if you did manage to keep going the. I'm glad elizabetsmum has been on, as she had twins and Hyperemesis in that and a singleton pregnancy - you definitely need meds and I'm sure as a nurse you don't need to hear from me about the dangers of dehydration, and may even have those famous kestostix already. How are liquids staying down? I'm sorry surgery is so unsympathetic - they will take it seriously if you start getting dehydrated, do keep testing your urine. How do you find ice lollies, jelly, flat coke, or lollies or the juice of tinned fruit?
emysmarie just posted a lovely picture of twins a bit further back. Exciting as it is, and perhaps, as you say, your body knows.
PengineTuxedo Welcome, do join us - there's a very grey area between bad ms and Hyperemesis, anyway, and I think one an have one at some stage merging into the other at another time - you are obviously suffering badly or you wouldn't have been prescribed meds. Have any of the liquids or food suggestions helped at all? If these meds have such a nasty side effect, I so agree with others, do report it and they should advise or change them.
Cluelessdil I'm glad the replies were helpful. Don't try and battle on without meds and do feel free to rant about the unfairness of it all.
Nobody should worry about tmi on here - no such thing, bile and foam and problems with the bowels are the stuff of discussions on this thread...
HexagonallySorry you feel so bad still with nasty side effects. It's worth asking if you can change meds as a lot of people get that sleepiness with cyclazine, at least at first. You may well need to be off a while, unfortunately - up to ten times is an alarming amount and it's difficult to work in a school with Hyperemesis. Can you get a sick note?
Skipton I'm glad your symptoms have reduced a bit and you've got some reassurance.
Great advice from elizabethsmum and Meerka and SomeSunnySunday too.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

Thanks everyone for all the support :) I manage to eat/drink little and often when I'm on the metroclopromide. If I forget even one dose though, it all goes to pot and I'm back to dry heaving again and eventually being sick. I still feel sick though all day every day when I'm on them. I'm only 18+6 though, and just concerned I'm going to end up on them for the entire pregnancy. I also have a constant horrible taste in my mouth which makes the sickness worse, so I am going through so many sugar free polos!

I'm just about managing to keep the iron tablets down - only had three doses so far. Iron infusions have been discussed with me, tbh I just want to not feel exhausted. I've been up 1 hours and 10 mins and I'm already struggling to stay awake!

Littlemiss20 · 05/03/2015 12:09

Thanks lucindaE I think you may be right about last time as I did lose over half a stone at the begining of my pregnancy. I am managing sipping some water over the day , other juice dont agree with me at all, I'm aiming for a litre a day. I don't have ketostix but will try get some. I appear to be passing enough urine and its a good colour.
I will go back to GP and try get something to help ease symptoms. I just need to be firm about it.

Littlemiss20 · 05/03/2015 12:14

Thanks everyone for all you advice, much appreciated Smile x

eallison88 · 05/03/2015 12:58

Spoke to my doctor, who wasn't impressed with my boss and is doing me a new sick note, specifying working hours of 9-1. so hopefully I'll miss the traffic (only 15 min drive), have a little more time in morning to get going, then home plenty of time before things start going downhill. Watch this space!

Littlemiss20 · 05/03/2015 13:33

Sounds like you have a good doctorSmile I hope that works well for you. How many weeks are you ealison? If you don't mind ne asking.
I have my first midwife appointment on Wednesday and I'm u sure if I should wait until then to ask about ant emetic or go back to my GP? X

LucindaE · 05/03/2015 17:27

eallison I am glad about your doctor being undestanding, if your boss isn't. How are things today? I hope skipton and all the new people (and not exactly old people) are coping today.

OP posts:
eallison88 · 05/03/2015 17:50

I'm 11 weeks, diagnosed and one hospital visit (and 4 drugs into my regime) and several out of hours docs and normal gp apts before my booking in apt at just under 10 weeks. Don't wait for midwife.

I think I've finally torn my oesophagus (luckily my phone spelt that for me!) This afternoon. Trying not to panic about it! Do I need to go straight to doc, or just monitor?

eallison88 · 05/03/2015 18:02

Just noticed my new sick note runs until 22/04. Specified "maximum 4 hours wirk/day" suggesting 9-1, as I've said mornings best. I love my gp. Though a little nervous about presenting the head with it tomorrow...

LucindaE · 05/03/2015 19:24

eallison I used to think that if it was red blood, it was probably the throat, and not to worry too much unless it was brown, but when Hello tore hers, they said she ought to get it checked out within hours, so it's probably best to play safe and report it on emergency number for advice.
Hugs. Poor old you. Mother Hen is most perturbed you have to go back to work.

OP posts:
Skiptonlass · 05/03/2015 20:54

Definitely get a tear checked out. You have no way of seeing the size, position, severity etc yourself so get thee to the docs. It also will show your gp that you're vomiting a lot.

I'm off work tomorrow thank goodness. I've used a vacation day and for once, the phone and email will be off ( a rare occurrence, my work think I should be available through usa business hours as well, the gits...) Going to rest up, recoup and see if the docs have anything else in their pharmacopeia for me !

DurhamRed · 06/03/2015 03:46

Hi all, just popping in to update. I was admitted to hospital on Wednesday due to having pre-eclampsia. Labour has been induced and is currently a very slow progress...I will update again when Redette arrives safely Smile

Meerka · 06/03/2015 07:09

durham delighted to hear that very soon your ordeal will be over. Wishing you the very best and hoping that Redette is here by now.

eallison88 · 06/03/2015 07:22

Had another massive vomit last night, with no blood...so I think it might have been a knick rather than tear... If any more blood I will go to gp

elizabethsmum · 06/03/2015 07:43

good luck durham thinking of you- your pregnancy pretty much sounds identical to my first- hg all the way through and then early induction due to pe- the labour was a blessed relief! will keep checking for news!

eallison I started having streaks of red blood in vomit at about 20 weeks but it was never much- they didn't seem worried about it and nothing was done - it seemed to improve by itself.

skipton poor you- at least you now have three days to rest up a little- will they prescribe ondansetron? ?

sorry have to get ready for school run- quick wave to all.

Littlemiss20 · 06/03/2015 09:39

Glad it's ok ealison.
How is everyone's partners with hypermesis?
I feel mine doesn't understand it, and wonders why it's so difficult to get going x

LucindaE · 06/03/2015 09:59

DurhamRed Ooh, the best of luck, belatedly...Nasty about pre eclampisa (spelling). We'll all be thinking of you. I'm so glad you're about to meet baby.
eallisonI'm glad it seems to be OK. I think only a little blood isn't much to worry about and probably from the throat, as I used to have it and have it still with migraines, and am still alive, I believe [winks] But what is dodgy is a lot of blood, or if it's brown (and it seems, from the stomach, coffee grounds) then it's an emergency.
LittleMiss20 I do feel for you. They seem to vary so much, but a lot don't realize how bad it is, even though they make such a hoo-ha about a severe hangover. Mine wasn 't brilliant, but I didn't have it long, and he was away when it was at its worst,so he didn't realize...
Waves to Skipton and everyone...

eallison88 · 06/03/2015 11:20

littlemiss mines brilliant most of the time. He's good at going out and getting whatever I decide I might be able to eat, pretty good at running round after me and not expectingme to do very much. Very good at banning me from going to work when necessary. And very good at making me laugh at the right times and telling me I'm brilliant at the right times. Completely incapable of keeping the house running (washing up, normal shopping, tidying, washing clothes...). And not very good at keeping me company when I'm being sick. I tackled him about this last night
He said that it wasn't very nice watching me be sick. I informed him it's not particularly nice being sick, and just having him shout "are you okay?" When I'm blatantly not is really unhelpful. So when had my big vom last night he serenaded me and gave me bits of loo roll to blow my nose/wipe my mouth and flushed for me so I didn't have to. I can't tell you how much nicer (not really the right word... less bad!) it was to have him there with me.
