I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

I have finally found a really helpful doctor at my surgery (Female of course). She's given me some more tablets but the 4mg ones this time so that I can try reducing the dose. She also commented on how much better I looked than last time when I went in begging for ondansetron!

Just as the sickness is improving, my back is getting worse. Sunday night I ended up sat on the kitchen floor for half an hour in tears cos I'd bent down to get something out the fridge, couldn't get back up and was at home on my own! Being referred for physio but until then I'm in agony constantly. Can't even roll over in bed without yelping!

Hope everyone else is surviving today :)

Hellohellohowareyou · 03/03/2015 13:27

Hi LucindaE I'm not doing too bad, still vomiting in the morning but no blood clots which is good! SPD is starting to get on my nerves though.

But it's exactly 16 weeks today until my ELCS Grin

Skiptonlass · 03/03/2015 17:07

So I have some promethazine... Kind of surprised it has ephedrine sulphate and caffeine in... But doc and pharmacist seem to say it's ok. Brand name is Lergigan. Anyone had this?

I'm feeling really frustrated. heartburn came back yesterday, vomiting/dry retching throughout day today. Following the pattern of the last two times, ill start not being able to keep anything down from tomorrow, then end up on hospital on Friday.

I don't know what to do. Part of me feels I should be being positive and just keep muddling on. Part of me thinks I need to nip this in the bud. I don't know whether to wait til Thurs when I've got a telephone consultation with a sympathetic GP or to try and get an earlier apt that could be with anyone (ie less sympathetic/knowledgeable...).

Skiptonlass · 03/03/2015 17:24

Bud. Nip. Be direct. Tell them what happened last time and what you want.

eallison88 · 03/03/2015 18:09

Husband has banned me from working tomorrow. Don't know quite how to break it the boss though!

Meerka · 03/03/2015 18:29

skipton the caffeine - how much of it is there? there's some controversy over caffeine becuase some people say that it can have seriously ill effects early on but others say that the evidence is not clear cut at all. Both sides say it's caffeine over a certain amount - i ~think~ it was 8 strong coffees' worth a day, and that's being very conservative.

At a guess I think it will be ok and also I don't think they would have prescribed it if there was risk. The ephedrine I'm not so sure of, that does sound a bit surprising but Im out at the extend of my knowledge here!

I do think that they would not have prescribed it unless they were sure it was safe though. The medical establishment and pharmacists in particular are generally very, very cautious in pregnancy. For certain many people are given promethazine in preg against the nausea and vomitting (it's also given with pethadine injections as an anti-nauseant too).

ealli I'm glad you won't be going in. Your boss will have to manage!

Skiptonlass · 03/03/2015 21:32

50 mg per tablet. I'm utterly sickened by tea (which I usually mainline) so I'm not tooooooo concerned about my caffeine intake. It's minimal from other sources...I'm just surprised by the formulation mix with ephedrine as well. I'm only supposed to use it for three weeks.

Oh well, doc says it's ok, pharmacist checked her registry, hubs and I both googled (we're both svience bods) and I asked my pharmacist friend who works on the medicine and poisons hotline... (Paranoid, moi?) :)

Will neck one and get into bed. Fingers crossed! Will report back in the morning. I'm a lark normally but I've been in a dreadful state getting up recently. Vomiting two or three times before I leave the house and having to nibble then lie down before I shower. Was at work this morning and three colleagues asked if I was ill!

Thank you all you lovely ladies for your support. I'm trying to cut my hours down a bit - have set myself a target of 45 and no higher...and I've booked Friday off (short notice, but ah well) so I can rest a bit. Baby is more important than my boss's ego!

E alli, sometimes the hubby is right ;) look after yourself!

SomeSunnySunday · 04/03/2015 00:31

Hello. Not sure that anyone on this thread will remember me - I posted a lot in May/June/July/ August when things were really bad, but don't think I've been on here since then. My HG dwindled to manageable levels after about 26 weeks (sickness atopped entirely, and only mild nausea remained), and once I felt better enough I selfishly didn't want to think about it.

But I thought I'd update from the other side. DD (DC3, and my third HG pregnancy) arrived safely at 39 weeks (and amazingly, given my appalling - and at times non-existent - diet for her entire gestation, weighing over 9lbs) nearly 3 months ago. I felt well again -really, properly well - almost immediately, and am still enjoying not feeling sick on a daily basis! She's a gem of a baby - feeds well, sleeps well, and has done from the start, so I've found it easier than I did with my others to really heal and recover from the whole awful experience. I'm already giving away baby things, and am very relieved to know that I will never go through HG again.

Thinking of all who are suffering. The months I've lost to HG during 3 pregnancies were such a dark time for me, and you all have my sympathy. Keep fighting the good fight, Lucinda, you are doing a great job.

Skiptonlass · 04/03/2015 07:39

Sunny, really glad your baby and you are healthy and doing well. That's exactly what I need to hear right now. :) gives me hope it'll all be ok.

Promethazine did not work :( think I've pulled something vomiting this morning.

eallison88 · 04/03/2015 09:24

Sunny, so good to hear that you and baby are well and youre recovering well. It's reassuring!

Skipton, I pulled something in the bottom of my back a couple of weeks ago and it's getting steadily worse. I think it's part and parcel of this!

Meerka · 04/03/2015 13:18

sunny I remember! biggest congrats going! So pleased to hear your news. Hope the birth went easy. Sounds like Little Sun is a perfect baby :D is she letting you sleep?

skipton give the promethazine 2-3 days to build up in the system. If it doesn't work then ask for somethign else. Some people respond better to some things than others, and sometimes they need a combination of meds.

Hope everyone is surviving today ...

CluelessDil · 04/03/2015 16:22

Hi all, I'm not sure if I'm a fraud on here as I'm not sure what I have is as severe as hg but the last couple of weeks have been a nightmare, particularly the last few days. Constant nausea and full on vomiting at least a few times a day.

I called the dr to see if there is anything I should be doing and was prescribed phroclorperazine 5mg tablets. I haven't managed to eat today so taking one seems to have helped as I've just eaten a roll. However stupidly I've been googling the tablets and it seems there is quite a lot of warning against them? I'm not questioning my dr for prescribing them, more myself for not being able to cope with sickness when other people seem to.

Any advice/experience would be really welcome. My DH is great but I feel so alone either these symptoms and at just over 9 weeks I haven't told anyone I'm pregnant so also feel quite isolated in a way.

Skiptonlass · 04/03/2015 16:23

Thanks meerka, I will. I've taken it last night and this morning. It makes me very jittery and shaky though. Did anyone else get that? Maybe it's the caffeine and ephedrine because the antihistamine should make me sleepy! My heart was pounding last night, like I'd had really strong coffee. I couldnt sleep at all. It wasn't a nice feeling and so far it's not stopped me being sick :( I'll give it a chance until Friday then I'll go back to the mw.

Honestly, I feel like I'm moaning so much.

LucindaE · 04/03/2015 17:03

Cluelessdil Welcome, and you are not a fraud at all, this seems like Hyperemesis. Do take the meds - the GP would never prescribe anything that would be damaging to the baby and that didn't have a proven safety record - Meerka is the expert on the research, but I think I'd take what you heard online with - forgive expression - a pinch of salt (much needed, probably). How are liquids staying down? The biggest danger is dehydration - not at all good for either of you if it goes on too long. How are ice lollies and ice cubes and sips of flat coke or the juice of tinned fruit? Do invest in some kesostix from a chemists to test for dehyration, but I hope if the meds help a lot you won't need them urgently. You are not to feel guilty for not managing without meds - Hyperemesis isn't like ordinary ms.
SomeSunnySunday Of course I remember you. How lovely to hear from you - I did wonder about you. Congratulations on baby and I'm so glad you have an angelic one. Thanks for a message of encouragement for those currently suffering Did you see emysmarie's photo of her twins? So nice to get these happy outcomes...
Waves to all. Back soon.

I haven't posted on this thread before as I don't have hg, just really bad morning sickness, so been reading on here for tips - hope that's ok?!

Skipton I tried promathezine over the weekend and I really didn't get on with it. It didn't help the sickness at all, but the worst part was what you're describing - the jitteryness. I took my first one at bed time, and my legs were literally jumping all over the place and I was so restless. If you're not getting on with it, maybe go back to your GP?

CluelessDil · 04/03/2015 17:25

Thanks so much lucinda your kind reply has made me well up! It's just such a relief to talk about.Drinking is a bit of a struggle, I know I'm not drinking enough but trying. When I had bad diarrhoea the other week (sorry for tmi) it was dehydration I was most worried about too. I haven't even heard of kesostix I will definitely look into that.

It didn't even occur to me to try ice lollies, given that I'm like a furnace at night time and have been sleeping with the window wide open an ice lolly would be ideal!

So sorry to everyone going through a hard time.

eallison88 · 04/03/2015 17:35

Don't feel like frauds anyone-if you have sickness bad enough to be looking here for tips /advice, then you are suffering too much and need the support that these lovely ladies (and me when I'm not feeling too sorry for myself!).

Jittery ness after promethazine sounds awful. I think I only had a couple of doses of it before I was swiftly moved on, and didn't have the jittery ness. Or at least I was so busy being sick I didn't notice! I'd go back to doc and question if there's anything else, there is no need to add to unpleasant symptoms if it doesn't ease anything.

In terms of worrying about drugs and baby; you not getting any food or water in then that must be far far worse for baby then any potential side effects of drugs - drugs that there seems to be a fairly hefty track history of prescribing in pregnancy.

Littlemiss20 · 04/03/2015 17:37

Hi I am new to here. I am 8 weeks pregnant with my second baby and I have been really struggling this time. I started vomiting at end of week 6a and I'm just exhausted now!
I feel nauseated and have indigestion all day and vomit 6-10 times a day, not sure if this hypermesis?
I have struggled to get out the last week, I manage to get my son from school and take dog a small walk but that is it. I'm absolutely exhausted after and get wobbly legs.
I saw my GP this morning and to be fair it's not the best surgery! I wasn't even examined was in for 2 minutes and told that it's normal and to try Peptac and gave me a sick note until Monday.
I work as a nurse and do 12.5 hr shifts. I Can see that far enough.

I feel disappointed in myself as with my last pregnancy I did vomit about 5 times a day but managed a routine to work ect and felt ok when I wasn't vomiting, much more bareable. I do have a feeling it may be twins as I am a twin myself and have that feeling. X

CluelessDil · 04/03/2015 17:46

That's true eallison I feel like this constant sickness is turning me from a normally rational person into a guilt ridden mess! I think it will do me a world of good to stick around here for a while

HexagonAlley · 04/03/2015 18:11

Hello all. Just looking for advice. Posted last week and was told I defo wasn't just having normal pregnancy sickness. I'm nauseous all day and vomiting between 6-10 times a day. I also feel horrendously dizzy.
I've been prescribed cyclizine and I think it's helping. Defo less throwing up but still have nauseous and quite bad heartburn(?)
However I am soooo sleepy. It's like being on a sedative. I can't keep my head up at all. Just want to lie down. Ib had a few days off work (PT in a school) and not sure how I will manage tomorrow with classes and falling asleep in lessons.
Any thoughts?

Meerka · 04/03/2015 18:34

in haste - skipton if you're getting those reactions, can you contact an emergency doc or pharmacist? even the local gyne dept at hospital? It might be fine but I think that needs checking. If you can't, tbh I'd stop taking them.

Hello to new people and welcome, everyone welcome here.

PenguinTuxedo · 04/03/2015 19:17

Thanks for the welcome :) I do feel a bit like a fraud cos I'm currently signed off sick, but cos it's not hg, I feel I should just be getting on with it.
I was diagnosed with anaemia on Monday, and been told I need to try my best with the iron tablets, or I'll have to go to hospital. They've made the sickness/nausea so much worse though :( and I'm just so bloody exhausted, I can barely stand up on my own. Work aren't understanding either.
I'm on 3xmetoclopromide a day, and I'm another worried about what the drugs might do to the baby.

SomeSunnySunday · 04/03/2015 20:00

Thanks all, and Meerka, yes finally I have a sleeper (by 5 weeks old DD was sleeping better at night than her 3 year old brother).

Penguin I ended up quite anaemic too. I managed to increase my iron levels between 28 and 39 weeks sufficiently to stop the medical boss panicking by having 2 sachets of Spatone in diluting (fresh would have been better) juice a day. I absolutely could not stomach the iron tablets, or the liquid form of these. I also did my best with my diet (mainly in the form of dark chocolate and cherries). But I realise that HG makes it hard to tackle even in this way. My consultant discussed iron infusions with me - in the end it was decided that these weren't necessary, but I found it comforting to know that there was a non-dietary treatment option.
