Hi all, i'm new to this board and have my first scan in a couple of weeks time!! (2nd baby for me!)Due around the middle of May next year and i'm sooo excited, can't wait for my scan so we can tell everyone! Second time around but I seem to have forgotten so much, I was wondering if anyone knew how many scans you get in Glasgow? I had 2 last time, but my partner seems to think this has changed to just the one. Also, is there a sneaky way of finding out the sex of baby?
thanks all!

Hey sunface.

Depending on where you live its usually only one. Over on the private scans in scotland and the april ante natal thread we have spent hours moaning about this!!! I live in uddingston and am registered with Wishaw Hospital and will only get a 12 week one, other women live in shotts and dennistoun and only get one too.

There are a few of us that have either paid for a private nuchal scan at 12 weeks, or are going to pay and have a 20 week one. Think this is the only way you can find out the sex as most hospitals (certainly wishaw) wont tell you. These vary in price but are about £200.

Feel free to join us on either of the threads I mentioned before as there are quite a few of us tartans, including edinburgh and stirling.

I was at the Queen Mother's in Glasgow and I think I only got one. Babies born in 2000 and 2002. Only for dd I got a second one at 36 wks because they thought she was too small (which she wasn't).

sunface · 10/10/2006 16:32

Thanks guys, it's so unfair isn't it. i'm def got 2 scans last time but in my booking in info pack i'm sure it just mentions the one..... we were soo hoping to find out the sex too. Ocht well don't know if we can afford £200.....

Which hosp are you at? Apparently at QMH whey now have a sign up saying don't bother asking cos we won't tell ya.

geordiemacminx · 10/10/2006 16:37

There are cheaper ones available - around £120... try babyscanning.co.uk think this will take you to the glasgiw based site.

Where abouts are you?

sweetkitty · 10/10/2006 16:52

hi I was registered at Wishaw General too but had DD2 at home. I was living in Ayrshire last year and got a 12 week and 20 week scan (moved up here just after 20 weeks) sonographer was a right old cow and wouldn't tell us the sex, even though she told my friend who was due the same time. We paid £190 at babyscanning in Glasgow to have a private one done in 3d/4d but I think you can have a normal private one for £90.

I had DD1 in London and was offered 2 scans and nuchal fold testing at 13 weeks!

Hiya folks, i attend the Royal Maternity in Glasgow and may be swapping over hospitals as the level of care has been absolutely shocking!! Have asked for help right from day one and have not received ant at all!! I am very apprehensive about being a mum and about the possibility of it being a boy which i feel terrible enough about, so asked for a scan to determine the sex so that i had time to process thing and all i got was a flat no and no help on how to deal with how i am feeling!! Had to sort out all my own help from people, gps. health visitors etc which should all have been done for me. You should be offered the option of two scans during pregnancy as in the English NHS, but then we dont know how to spend money wisely, we pay the fat cats at the top too much so we as patients dont receive the care and attention we should!! Does anybody know of any hospitals which will offer second scans? or has anyone else been in this predicament?

TheBlairAitchProject · 10/10/2006 20:00

i was at the Royal too, and i got loads of scans because they were concerned about the baby's health, i don't think i could have received better help anywhere else in the country. if you don't mind me asking, how and who have you asked about scans? in fact, now that i come to think of it, i was offered a detailed scan on my very first appointment there so i think the 2 scan thing is far from unusual at the royal...
have you been attending daycare at all or are you being seen at your GP?
do you know the name of your consultant?

ja9 · 10/10/2006 20:05

i had my second scan today at stirling royal...12 and 20 weeks routinely.

sunface, if you are considering paying for another scan, try this place in livingston - £75

thelittlestboho · 10/10/2006 23:52

Down here in Ayrshire,we get two.

bananasarny · 08/11/2006 16:36

Hi all

I've had 3 scans at Wishaw so far - am 14 weeks now. I had spotting at begining so I was checked twice for that and had a 'dating' scan. I think you have to push for scans they wont offer! Depends on your circumstances, age maybe etc?

geordiemacminx · 08/11/2006 16:38

Oooo another scottish one!!!!

If you are interested we are having a mini meet at starbucks at Glasgow fort on Sunday...

there are a couple of us from the april thread, anjo from Hamilton due in Jan and a couple of others?

tillsbluegirl · 08/11/2006 16:52

I'm in Renfrewshire attending the RAH in Paisley and got 3 scans, one at 9 weeks cos of spotting, and the other two at 12 and 18 weeks, which is the normal procedure there as I understand. No problems with telling us the sex either, except for saying it wasn't 100%.

lazyemma · 08/11/2006 16:55

I'm in Glasgow too, due April 7th. It's a shame about only getting the one scan - I think I might pay for another 2d one after 20 weeks just to make sure all is still well.

geordiemacminx · 08/11/2006 17:01

Hey lazy emma - aint seen you on the due in april thread... I'm due at the end, there are a few Glasgow mums due in April too. You are welcome to come to the meet up too - sorry about short notice!!!

zippy34 · 08/11/2006 18:39

Hi

I'm due any day up at the QMH and I only got one routine one (12wks) although I'd had an early one via the EPAU as I had cramping and spotting at 6wks.

The guidelines are that we should ALL get 2 scans at 12 and 20wks. As far as I can make out, it's only Glasgow & Clyde, Lothian and Lanarkshire that are yet to implement the 20wk scan routinely.

It might be worth making a fuss about this if you want a 20wk scan. I'm sure I read a post from an Edinburgh mum who pulled this off. The Chief Executive of NHS GG&C is Tom Divers so might be worth writing to him and your MP/MSP?

Have a look at these for the relevant guidelines on antenatal care in Scotland:

QIS recommendations on routine ultrasound screening for women in Scotland

Scottish Executive - Framework for maternity services in Scotland: antenatal care

Apparently the Scottish Executive have to give Health Boards time to employ enough sonographers to cover these extra scans but as the recommendations came out in 2004 it's getting a bit much imo.

I'm not great at complaining but I think I'd really have benefitted from getting a scan at 20wks and we couldn't afford to go private. Still, too late for me now! Maybe next time .

lazyemma · 08/11/2006 19:01

thanks a lot for that info, zippy - really useful. And hi there geordiemacminx - I can't make this Saturday but thanks anyway. I haven't posted on the due in april thread yet - didn't realise there was one! I'm not very observant.

lollipopz · 08/11/2006 20:26

Hiya, what hospital are you booked in to? I am due in 6 weeks and booked into the queen mum's, this is my 3rd preg and I have only ever got the routine 12 week scan, however in this preg I had 2 at early pregnancy before that. In my previous 2 pregnancies I was scanned more than once when the midwife ordered one ie for growth or suspected water loss. In general they seem good at scanning you if you have a problem, though its only the 12 week one thats routine.
The place in Livingstone is really good I would recommend it, I went when I was 20 weeks and paid £75 for a 2d scan found out baby's sex and checked everything was ok.
hth xx xx

geordiemacminx · 08/11/2006 20:38

I'm booked into Wishaw, i've had 3 scans too because of a previous m/c but wont bee getting an NHS free one so have booked into the Nuffield hospital in Glasgow. Lazyemma - its sunday not sat but if yu cant make it no probs - pop into the april thread though, you'll find us a lovely bunch to have a moan too and discuss cravings, cramps and crappines of partners!!! Where abouts in Glasgow are you?

Bannanasarny, feel fee to drop into the april thread too - wherebouts in Lanarkshire are you? I'm only a week and a bit ahead of you so we could end up being maternity ward buddies!!!

trixymalixy · 09/11/2006 10:03

Hi,

I went down the route of complaining to my MSP and to the director of maternity services in Glasgow quoting all the QIS standards etc.

All I got was a letter back saying, yes we know you should be getting two scans as a matter of routine, butwe don't have funding so tough.

My MSP is writing to the health minister about this.

It would be really good if as many people as possible got their MSPs on the case so maybe we could get something done about this.

i ended up paying for my own second scan at the Nuffield.

geordiemacminx · 09/11/2006 10:27

Trixy/lolipoz - are you coming to the meetup on sunday?

lazyemma · 09/11/2006 10:37

I'm south west glasgow. If I stay in the area, I'll be sprogging at the Southern General, but we might well be moving to Dundee when I'm 30 weeks or so.

geordiemacminx · 09/11/2006 10:42

I'm over in Uddingston, not sure what the southern general is supposed to be like but my SIL had her twins and other 2 at ninewells in dundee which is apparently nice. Nic epart of the world too!!

lazyemma · 09/11/2006 10:50

I think the Southern General is supposed to be OK - the midwifes certainly seem very nice. I'm off for a check-up today actually: fingers crossed!

geordiemacminx · 09/11/2006 10:55

good luck - let us know how it went- oh and get yourself and bump over to the due in april thread - its under the ante natal section!!
