I have name changed because I really don't want this to be linked to my normal name!

Basically, I'm really constipated, I've read its a common pregnancy symptom so does anyone have any immediate relief ideas?

I'm getting to be in so much pain, I don't know what to do, we are supposed to be having a lovely christmas shopping and decorating day tomorrow, and I don't want this to ruin it!

I know about water/fibre/exercise etc but what can I do to sort it now?! I'm so sorry for asking this Blush

Flaxseed or linseed - a good teaspoon stirred into a yogurt and eaten. Hospital gave it to me after giving birth and it really helped.

I also eat prunes everyday and drink plenty of water.

NoRoomForALittleOne you've freaked me out!

Ok, I give in. Can I buy suppositories over the counter or do I need a prescription? And are they ok to take at 25 weeks pregnant?

Or should I really be asking the doctor this?

fortywinx I think that's what is happening. God I hate pregnancy sometimes! Day 2 of lactulose, it does say it can take 3 days though so will carry on with it too.

You can buy them over the counter and they are fine throughout pregnancy. They are free if they are prescribed but it's quicker to just buy them.

SoEmbarrassingIveNameChanged · 01/12/2014 13:43

Thanks

This happened to me a few weeks back! Also had a fairly long thread about it! I ended up with suppositories but as I started to insert, I finally went! I was on day 8 and in horrible pain so I feel for you!

Good luck :)

SoEmbarrassingIveNameChanged · 01/12/2014 17:08

Day 8 Bimberley, poor you!

Any tips for suppositories, I'm actually nervous!

Lie on you left hand side, use a drop of lube. Deep breathe, breathe out as you push it in. Hold for as long as the packet tells you to. Enjoy your poo.

prettywhiteguitar · 01/12/2014 17:57

I'm just sending sympathy because there is nothing worse ! I have prune juice in the fridge all the time as constipation is my pregnancy 'thing'

Living all the enjoy your poo comments !

Tinned pears, apples, orange juice and LOTS of water plus prunes! I sympathise and definitely don't miss that part of pregnancy!!

prettywhiteguitar · 01/12/2014 19:57

Please do come back for a poo update.....just so we all have closure on this Grin

SoEmbarrassingIveNameChanged · 01/12/2014 20:00

Haha prettywhiteguitar so glad I name changed! The shame!

Trying to work up the courage to use the suppository at the moment. I'm not sure I can do it and know it'll end in tears!

Lactulose, Fybergel, Laxido!!! (go to the Dr, it gets worse the more pregnant you get!), prunes and if it's been a while suppositries- they honestly help and aren't as bad as they sound.

I also can't believe I'm posting this but I found getting down into a squatting position (over some loo roll!) Helped move it along quicker than a sitting position! Blush

Er, as my name suggests, I was no stranger to this when pregnant. Grin Hope you get some relief soon.

Bolshybookworm · 01/12/2014 20:14

Having a good chuckle reading this thread as I have so been in your position- I ended up having to get my dad to bring me a load of lactulose Blush.

Do the suppositories NOW. They're not as bad as you think they're going to be (they're a bit squidgy, so easy to insert) and the relief, oh god THE RELIEF. So worth it not to feel like your sitting on the worlds biggest, hardest poo. Enjoy!

Bolshybookworm · 01/12/2014 20:15

And I second the movicol, it's much more effective than lactulose if you're really constipated (IME Blush).

prettywhiteguitar · 01/12/2014 20:19

Honestly there's no shame or dignity here in pregnancy !!!

NoRoomForALittleOne · 01/12/2014 20:20

I'm afraid my top tip for a suppository is just to get on with it. Don't make it in to a big deal. You don't need to worry about lube with a glycerin suppository. Just a bit of tap water on it will make it a bit slippery. You can also insert it while hovering over the toilet seat similar to how you might insert a tampon (and, yes, I do get that it sounds a bit, well, wrong...).

The bigger issue is ignoring the urge to poo for as long as possible so that the suppository can be as effective as possible. Good luck!

3littlefrogs · 01/12/2014 20:24

Movicol, lactulose, glycerine suppositories and sugar free sweets.

Never, never eat high fibre cereal if you are pregnant. You will end up with a massive blockage in your colon that will not shift.

Stewed fruit, especially stewed apples, prunes, vegetable soup, lentils, porridge. All good.

Bolshybookworm · 01/12/2014 20:27

Also recommend a hot chana or Tarka dhal from your local takeaway. Pulses plus chilli is a winning combination!

Roonerspism · 01/12/2014 20:29

Lactulose. High dose! Dried apricots. Syrup of figs.

Stick Vaseline where the sun don't shine before you go to ease pain...

Right soo I'm afraid I'm about to lower the tone (if that's even possible!) even more now. I tried the suppository (no lube) and it, err well, wont stay up there. Keeps sliding back out and I can't get it all the way in Blush

I'm feeling miserable, today was so wasted, every time I sat up or stood up it felt like I needed to go, but then couldn't. I spent most of it laying down! House is a tip.

Have tried sugar free sweets, lactulose, hot water to drink, prune juice, orange juice, fruit, lots of water and a curry. I'm wary about eating to much because I'm 90% sure there's stuff waiting to come out and the bit behind it is softened.

Also tried baths and showers, squatting and the step. Not straining but my body seems to want to do things automatically which is hard to stop!

Thanks all soo much for the suggestions though!

OK - let's get really graphic Grin - how far in did you manage to get the suppository? If it's gone in far enough, you'll find that your bottom suddenly takes over, and 'sucks' it in!

Honestly.

Have another go.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 01/12/2014 21:08

You've got to get right stuck in. It's like inserting a tampon but in the other hole

SoEmbarrassingIveNameChanged · 01/12/2014 21:08

Blush about 2/3rds I'd say.. I am going to have another go, it wasn't as awful as I thought and this is like the final extreme, I wont know what to do if it doesn't work
