Girl - ie. Tamara

jasnDISMemBERED · 02/10/2006 13:45

Probably female, but I do know of a male Tam.

Fimbo · 02/10/2006 13:46

Either or. Tam is a shortened version of Thomas in Scotland. Tammy I would think of a girl i.e. short for Tamsin etc

anniediv · 02/10/2006 13:46

Boy. (Tamlin). But now just thinking of Tammy Girl. Hmmm....

BettySpaghetti · 02/10/2006 13:46

Tam = male
Tammy = female

(from my experiences)

NomDePlume · 02/10/2006 13:46

Girl, mainly because I remember shopping in Tammy Girl

JackieNoHeadJustABloodyStump · 02/10/2006 13:46

I think I'd assume female (as in Tammy Girl clothes). If it was for a boy would it be short for Tamburlaine?

hulababy · 02/10/2006 13:47

I'd assume it was a girl, simply because I have only come across girls with that name.

FluffyOHaraOfSnugglesville · 02/10/2006 13:47

girl I have a cousin who's name is shortened to those and I use go to school with a Tam/Tammy also

MrsSpoon · 02/10/2006 13:47

Up here is Scotland, Tam would be a man.

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 02/10/2006 13:47

hmmm some interesting thoughts here - my first reaction to a name that DH has suggested for a boy was "what would it be shortened to" - and the obvious were either Tam, or Tammy......and my initial reaction was 'too girly'.

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 02/10/2006 13:49

Jackie - no not shortened from that.

From Rabbie Burns:

Tam o' Shanter.

WHEN chapman billies leave the street,
And drouthy neebors, neebors meet;
As market-days are wearing late,
An folk begin to tak the gate;
While we sit bousing at the nappy,
An getting fou and unco happy,
We think na on the lang Scots miles,
The mosses, waters, slaps, and styles,
That lie between us and our hame,
Whare sits our sulky, sullen dame,
Gathering her brows like gathering storm,
Nursing her wrath to keep it warm.

This truth fand honest Tam o Shanter,
As he frae Ayr ae night did canter:
(Auld Ayr, wham ne'er a town surpasses,
For honest men and bonie lasses).

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 02/10/2006 13:54

LOL I know NDP - just talking to him about baby stuff he's talking so 'freely' about it all! Doesn't seem at all phased now.

From Rabbie Burns

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 02/10/2006 13:56

haha - ........everyone think DS1 is Welsh (his named is shortened to Taf or Taffy) and if we chose this name they'd think this one was Scottish

OP posts:
HRHQueenOfQuotes · 02/10/2006 14:18

hmm - I have to say it's definitely growing on me now I know that Tam is ok.........

Tafara, Tongai and Tamuka.........what do you reckon?

Elibean · 02/10/2006 14:20

I like Tam! I'd think boy for Tam, girl for Tammy.

And congratulations,

expatinscotland · 02/10/2006 14:21

Tam = male.

But I am in Scotland.

bubbaloo · 02/10/2006 14:21

beckybrastraps · 02/10/2006 14:25
