At my 25 week check today the mw commented that I am A+ and it was a good blood type as in her personal experience A+ves have quick labours.

She was referring to her experience on the wards, just wondering what your experiences are and if they back up her findings? I'm intrigued!

I'm O+
DS1 - traumatic but fast 3.5 hr active labour (but 12 hrs from first ctx to baby), PPH
DS2 (3 weeks ago) - absolutely amazing! No pain relief, less than 6 hrs from first twinge to baby. Up & about straight away. Took both boys to the park when ds2 was 2 days old.

squizita · 08/10/2014 20:15

O+

...in contrast to some O+ people, mine was pretty average bar being rather fast.
Quite intense contractions (MW said it was like a drip birth), no time for anything bar gas, air and hot water. 2nd degree tear but it was a straight one and easy to stitch. No interventions with instruments - had 2 sweeps before over 5 days.
PFB so nowt to compare with but I can't complain, think I got off pretty lightly in the grand scheme of things.

enormouse · 08/10/2014 20:35

B+

Both, fairly easy, quick labours (in hospital at 11pm with DS1, 2.30am with DS2 - both born by 6am), very little intervention.

MrsPatMustard · 08/10/2014 21:07

B+

first stage relatively quick, fully dilated in 6hours. (although felt like years!)

second stage drawn out and difficult (2 and a half hours of pushing before forceps intervention. DS stuck like a cork in a bottle.)

KatherinaMinola · 08/10/2014 21:32

How bonkers. I can't see how blood type could possibly affect labour. However...

A+
4.5 hour labour

PacificDogwood · 08/10/2014 21:38

I've been thinking: how does the MW mentioned in the OP account for the same woman (who retains the same blood group all her life) having very different birth experiences for different children?

Bonkers is right.

helensburgh · 08/10/2014 21:42

A +

Had to be induced and after three days of active labour had emergency Caesarian

Second child didn't even go through labour straight for the Caesarian,

joanofarchitrave · 08/10/2014 22:12

AB-. Fast straightforward labour - sweep at 4pm, ds born 11.15pm, no funny business.

But what a bonkers idea. This suggests to me that the midwives are spending too long leafing through medical notes. If there were some plausible physiology behind this, wouldn't someone have funded a study by now?

joanofarchitrave · 08/10/2014 22:17

Knock me down with a feather - apparently there is at least one study that has found a significant association between blood groups with an A in them and preeclampsia. Can't see the whole article and there only seems to be one study, not a big group of them. The last thing you want as a B or O blood group is to have nobody taking any notice of preeclampsia symptoms, so it probably doesn't help much even if it's true.

Greenstone · 08/10/2014 22:20

Apparently there has been a study done on blood groups and fertility.

Can't find anything about childbirth, but if, as the study suggests, those with type A are more fertile, then maybe there is a tiny link?

I must admit I do enjoy a good old wives' tale, mostly because I just think that there might be a lot about women and pregnancy and childbirth that we don't yet understand -- in part because it's hard to study, and in part because no-one's historically been that interested.

Cuppachaplz · 08/10/2014 23:09

Really???

A+
70h labour, waters broken 30h, fully dilated 8h, EMCS
Not simple or quick....

Pandora37 · 09/10/2014 00:41

Never heard that but I shall be on the lookout now for this. I suppose it's like when they say redheads are more susceptible to pain but I know a redhead who had nothing, not even paracetamol during her labour. But maybe that's because she was A +ve and it somehow overrode the fact she had red hair. Wink (Although I actually have no idea what blood group she is).

Ludways · 09/10/2014 00:47

Not convinced about it mattering but hey ho, I'm in...

O-
2 births almost identical, induction, 14 hour back to back, failure to progress, emergency sections. First one was hideous, second one was better mentally.

SweetsForMySweet · 09/10/2014 01:06

A+
Not a good first experience. I was 5 days overdue. Labour was long and I had to have an Emcs. I won't go into any further detail as I don't want to worry any new m2b

Devora · 09/10/2014 01:29

B negative. 30 hours in posterior labour before foetal distress (cord round neck) and emergency CS.

But this theory is bonkers as conkers.

squizita · 09/10/2014 03:11

I am a red haired O+.
Gas n air only in labour. And apparently it was intense. Also hobbled round with back pain most would be bed bound by in the past.
Super fertile (a blessing as I have a blood condition making it hard to hold on to pregnancies).

I agree - bonkers.

bunnygirl80 · 09/10/2014 03:30

I'm O positive

Baby 1: textbook labour, 5 hours start to finish, didn't even realise I was in established labour until my ob pointed out that regular cramps and backache every 5 mins was likely to mean something and I was 5cm dilated, no pain relief

Baby 2: ELCS due baby being footling breech

QueenofSleep · 09/10/2014 04:23

Sitting on labour ward in middle of night shift and me and my midwife colleagues have never heard of any such thing!

OddBoots · 09/10/2014 07:06

I'm not sure about the relationship with blood type but having had 2 children of my own, 1 gestational surrogate child for one couple and 2 gestational surrogate children for another couple I think the genes of the baby make a huge difference to the gestation at which labour starts.

TanteRose · 09/10/2014 07:27

A-

first labour - 3.5 hours
second labour - 1.5 hours

there have been studies in Japan too, where there are more women with type A, who have been shown to be more prone to pre-eclampsia. Wonder if that's why they are sooo strict with weight gain in Japan, because gaining too much weight puts you at risk from pre-eclampsia...

interesting

bruffin · 09/10/2014 07:36

B+
1st pre eclampsia 3 day induction with 24 hour labour

2nd 4hrs

Tomuchtosay · 09/10/2014 07:43

O-
2 Perfect (but obviously painful) natural births with no pain relief, 7 hours from the first twinge 1st one. I was told at after my first birth that I shouldn't hang around with my second as they come quicker!
She was right!
Midwife didn't even have time to record I was ready to push when dc2 arrived! It was 5 hours in total from that first twinge. I think it was 3 hours from being 3cm dilated. (not sure tho as was only checked when I asked to be)
I also stayed stood up walking about at all times during Labour then knelt on my knees holding on to a sink for the pushing on 1st birth. And had just got in the pool when I then started pushing on 2nd birth.

TortillasAndChocolate · 09/10/2014 08:13

B negative - absolutely horrendous.

TortillasAndChocolate · 09/10/2014 08:15

Just to expand, 24 hour labour ending in emergency c section and a lot of post birth complications. In hospital for a month. I hope it wasn't because of my blood type!!

Bouttimeforwine · 09/10/2014 08:23

There are a lot of us o-'s here.

  1. Back to back so long and epidural and ventouse
  2. Lovely, quick and straight forward.
