Poncey Names?

WinkyWinkola · 28/09/2006 19:11

I'm nearly 12 weeks pregnant with my second child.

DH and I have chosen names already but I'm starting to think they could be the source of mockery for the baby but I love these names. They're unusual (apart from my hearing lots of dog owners shouting, "Barnaby!," recently!) and dunno, I just like 'em.

What do you think? Am I going to subject my child to misery?

Boy
Atticus Elijah or Barnaby Elijah

Girl
Ophelia Pearl
Gretchen Violet

I love Elijah, think it's gorgeous.

Like others have said, it all depends on the area you live. I was teased rotten for having an unusual name, and really stuck out like a sore thumb in a generation of Emmas, Claires and Lauras.

3monkeys · 02/10/2006 14:37

My 3 have really ordinary names! You can't really shorten them to anything awful and they can't get teased for them (although will probably get teased for lots of other things!
The only problem so far is that DD is never the only Megan in the class - she doesn't care and actually signs herself Megan C!

Agatha I'm not keen on.

supermum1015 · 02/10/2006 15:42

personaly i really dislike all of those names however if it is the names you like then go for it!
it also depends on where you live. i would never ever call my kids by those names even if they were what i liked! just wouldn't work in my area!!
i like names that are different (my dp didnt so we compromised). i liked tai, ashton, levi and jessie for my son and daisy, lilly, jasmine and tillie for my dd. even though these are not different i liked them as i dont know anyone in my area with those names!

admylin · 02/10/2006 15:46

My dh wanted to call my ds Florian or Fabian, seriously. In Germany those names are perfectly common, every day boys names but imagine the summer holidays in UK - he would have hated us.

Elibean · 02/10/2006 15:47

Like Levi....aaargh, keep seeing boys names I love and not girl ones, which I need!

SSSandy · 02/10/2006 15:49

Don't need either in the foreseeable future but there are lots of girls' names I like. Don't feel very inspired by boys' names. Think I'd go for a fairly traditional simple boy's name.

CurrantBun · 02/10/2006 15:50

3monkeys, didn't realise Megan is such a popular name - is currently very high on my girls' names list! Might have to have a rethink if there are going to be 10 Megans in the class LOL!

WispyMisty · 02/10/2006 16:42

Hi - am a newbie here - but enjoying the thread - I have a Jacob and an Annabella. The only drawback is that sometimes they want things with their names on (you know like stickers or notebooks) and we might get a Jake or an Anne but never their full names. Sometimes find DD's middle name Naomi but not often

Like your choices - again not sure on the combinations - but once you say them a few times they start to click!

I agree that you should maybe keep choices to yourself until job is done - you'd have to be really harsh to tell someone you didn't like their new child's name once it was official!!

sophiewd · 02/10/2006 16:57

OUr DD is Edith Eleanor Mary and would have been George Wilfird Joseph if she was a boy. Love Atticus and Barnaby and a friends daughter is called ophelia.

donnie · 02/10/2006 17:04

I loved Ophelia and also Cordelia for dd2 but dh didn't. Too many tragic associations.

Best name ever - I used to teach a girl called Opheera McDoom. Really!

misdee · 02/10/2006 17:09

dd3 middle name (as most of you will know) is Dixie. i really do love it now, dh choose it and i wasnt too keen, but it suits her mroe than her first name.

someone please use Dixie as a first name

I'm such an idiot, I read that as someone named their daughter 'Dixie Misdee' and was thinking what a coincidence that was!

misdee · 02/10/2006 17:15

really, how cool!!

off to hunt.

misdee · 02/10/2006 17:17

found out already. i wonder where they got it from? dh named dd3 serena dixie after a football player (and a tennis player for serena).

Piffy · 02/10/2006 18:21

at the end of the day don't listen to anyone else - if you love the name chances are your kids will too as they will be more in tune with your preferences than anyone else's. Then if they ask 'why did you call me this' at least you can honestly say 'because it was the loveliest name I could think of' - who can argue with that

The best tip I had was to choose something that would prevent people from judging them without seeing them - imagine that they grow up to be chair of the Bank of England, would the name sound appropriate being read out on BBC1? I worked with a woman called Topsy once - poor thing had to work extra hard to be taken seriously and developed a really hard line persona to overcome that one in our male dominated profession!

I was teased throughout school for my surname, so I know all about it - you live with it, and get through it, honestly! And as for my middle name, well don't go there, I just pretend I don't have one, it's not even on my passport

It's important, but who cares if anyone else likes it so long as you do?! Px

OttercumCoypu · 02/10/2006 18:41

ophelia is beautiful . My 'mother' said it was a consideration for me along with Desdemona (yeauch) and what i am !!!

Mercedes519 · 02/10/2006 18:42

My friend had a woman in her antenatal class who was having her second child. The first one was called Jacob because she really liked the name. The only thing was, Jacob turned out to be a girl. She decided to call the second one Joshua before she knew the sex and would have called a girl Joshua! Luckily the child was a boy.

How confusing (and slightly cruel) is that for poor Jacob? She is going to go through life with everyone thinking she is a boy and questioning her name.

I know people say naming your child is a pre-emptive strike against all the pain they will cause you later but really!

SSSandy · 02/10/2006 18:44

She called a girl Jacob?

Piffy - thats a good point abou the judging thing.

Thats why we went for Alexander as a first name. If he grows up to be in a 'responsible' job he can use the full version, but Alexander James gives him lots of other choices. Should he confom to my deepest desire and become a beach bum he can be Sunny Jim!
