Poncey Names?

WinkyWinkola · 28/09/2006 19:11

I'm nearly 12 weeks pregnant with my second child.

DH and I have chosen names already but I'm starting to think they could be the source of mockery for the baby but I love these names. They're unusual (apart from my hearing lots of dog owners shouting, "Barnaby!," recently!) and dunno, I just like 'em.

What do you think? Am I going to subject my child to misery?

Boy
Atticus Elijah or Barnaby Elijah

Girl
Ophelia Pearl
Gretchen Violet

Just got DS2s class list, one of his little friends is called Hampus Kiwi.

Apologies to all you parents of Hampus Kiwis.

izzybiz, what pretty names, my dd is Isabella Rose so we obviously have similar ideas. When I was pg I liked Lily, Freya, Georgia and Eleanor for girls and George, William, and Adam for boys. I love the name Barnaby or Barney and Elijah, but I prefer the french Ophelie to Ophelia, I also love the french version of Aurelia, Aurelie. My dh would never countenance such fanciness though and DS is just plain Ted.

My bf has just phoned to tell me she is pg!!!! I'm so excited, she has pcos and has been trying for 8mnths, it took her 2yrs to fall with her ds. Yeah

I know someone with a Melody and a Harmony !!!
Hopefully she won't have anymore!

3catstoo · 04/10/2006 14:50

By that I didn't mean they were not nice names but together...mmmm....

schmizaj · 04/10/2006 16:20

Let's hope they are never in a choir together!! I like Aurelia also but was vetoed on that one by dh. Also on my vetoed list was Esme, Maia and Ismene.

josephjaidensmum · 04/10/2006 16:23

for a girl forgot to say

Astrophe · 04/10/2006 17:39

For those of you looking for a girls name, I am on a mission to make sure somebody uses the lovely name we had picked out if DS were a girl.

Its Ilya, but we will never use it now (even though we want more kids) as DS is Elijah, and we call him Eli, and Eli and Ily are too similar!

Ilya is, funnily enough, the Russian version of Elijah and has the same meaning. Most baby books/sites list it as a boys name , but I think its very girly and pretty (perhaps a Russian accent somehow makes it masculine!)

So go on...somebody...name your daughter Ilya!

Elibean · 04/10/2006 19:09

Came close to Ilya....dd is Elia, which is the French feminine of Elijah

Anyone hear of Mischa for a girl? I knew a (very cool & sexy) boy called Mischa when I was growing up, but no girls. Just saw it in a French babyname book...

Astrophe · 04/10/2006 19:51

Elibean, thats lovely. Do you say it E-lia or El-ia?

Elibean · 04/10/2006 19:55

We pronounce it Ell ee ah in English, but E (with acute accent on it) lya in French - iyswim! Hard to describe the E sound in French.

And now I need to find a name for dd2!

Astrophe · 04/10/2006 20:08

Its a gorgeous name, just a pity its also too close to Elijah! Have to get my thinking cap on for my future DDs, as I can't think of anything that comes close to Ilya, Elia, or my DD's name.My DD is Lucia, pronounced more or less in the spanish way (Lou-see-a) with the emphasis on the 'see'. It means 'light', and I just love it. We call her Luie or Cia You can have it if you like (free for postage)

Elibean · 04/10/2006 20:14

Lucia is lovely, A. It doesn't go with our surname, unfortunately, but thanks for the offer!

porolli · 04/10/2006 20:47

I have a Gabriel, an Eliza and a Robin (boy). my parents have been horrified every time, especially with the boys and have found it difficult to use their names. I love them though and think you should just do what you want. I second what others have said - children grow into their names. also, if children are going to get teased, something will be found!

SSSandy · 04/10/2006 20:48

No please don't use a boys' name like Ilya for a girl! I would never address a girl as Ilya (nor Jacob for that matter). Sounds so wrong, just couldn't imagine doing it. There are plenty of nice Russian girlnames, at least the diminutives are nice.

If you're into El names, how about Eloise?

Tex111 · 04/10/2006 20:56

I love your choices and I really love Pearl but then I do have a Tobias and a Rosamund.

amyjade · 04/10/2006 21:01

I really like Barnaby.

My friends DS is called Miller which i love!!

I am 32 weeks pregnant with No.3 we like Fraser or Harrison for a boy and Amelia for a girl.

Astrophe · 04/10/2006 21:36

SSSandy - I wondered who t'would be to lynch me for misuse of foreign names! C'mon, I'm never going to Russia! Sure its just like Toni/Tony, Sam, Robin, Sasha, Chris, Jo...lots of names are 'unisex'.

Never mind, rest assured I wont use the name Ilya - that ship has sailed.

Bucketsofbloodydinosaurs · 05/10/2006 09:15

I really wanted to call DS Ilias which is the Greek version (pronounced EEliass, not to rhyme with bilious .) But DH had his heart set on a son called Noah since he was a kid bless him, couldn't really argue although it's getting flippin common.
At DD's playschool there are Zara, Kira, Mia and Lyra (that's my DD before anyone puts their foot in it .

katrinas · 05/10/2006 10:27

winky,we too did not tell anyone what we were to call our baby (sex unknown) as all our conservative friends that called their children a more common (name that 100 kids in the supermarket would answer to if called) would not like them anyway. however,we did not care, and relished the opportunity to see peoples faces when we announced the name!
our two choices were: jessidy blaze for a boy
and Araminta mae (minty mae) for a girl.
don't know if you like any of these names, but i say go for what ever you like,as any name is open for attack as every one has a connatation attached to names in their head.take 'sharon' for example: in our parts every one used to say "sharon the meat packer" ???
by the waywe had a "jessidy blaze" which people thinks sounds like a cowboy, but i think thats cool anyway!

calcium · 05/10/2006 10:54

you've really touched a subject here haven't you. I would just go with the name you like as people will ALWAYS find a reason to be rude and dislike it. We called my second child Ruby my m in law turned round and said it was a revolting name so I told her where to go and that was what we were calling her! My best friend called her daughters Bede and Domino when she told me I thought they were horrible names but said nothing, now I can't imagine them called anything else. A child grows into a name.
Atticus is a lovely name, I have a friend in America who called her little boy that, very cool. Can't say I'm keen on the girls names but I like Pearl and Violet. I know a little girl called Velvet and one called Peony which I thought were gorgeous names different but not ridiculous. Someone once said to me you had to be comfortable calling (no shouting!) their names out in a playground, good tip I thought!!
Go with what YOU like and stuff what everyone else says, once you have had the baby no one will pass comment!

calcium · 05/10/2006 10:56

Katrinas, we were going to call our first daughter Minty , bottled out in the end as it rhymed too much with her surname, still love it though and one of our friends still calls her that.

kitbit · 05/10/2006 11:07

I would say go with what you really want, but do do DO ask a teenager first as they will be able to tell you what your gorgeously named baby will be called as school! A friend liked the name Kitty but her surname was Brown, and her 15 year old stepson vetoed it immediately saying she would without a doubt be nicknamed "shitty brown". Hmm! For this reason I might avoid Ophelia as any body part can be added to make a joke and if she is lucky enough to be well endowed in the nork department she is in for a very tough time.

laudaud · 05/10/2006 11:32

very good advice on checking with teenagers!
