Just looking for some advice and/or reassurance. I am currently 6+4 and starting to show- dh and a colleague have noticed. I am usually a size 10 and have a flat stomach. I know this can be fairly common in second and subsequent pregnancies, but I cannot find any positive information about showing this early in first pregnancies. Everything I read mentions cysts, tumours and molar pregnancies. This isn't just bloating, I look pregnant. I'm not sure if I should be ringing the gp (not even had my booking-in appt yet) or if I'm worrying over nothing.

I am highly aware that I am fully embracing the first time parent paranoia that I was determined to eschew, but I would very much appreciate some advice on this one.

Many thanks.

it's so long ago that i'm not sure, but I think I was showing about then too with dd. If you're slim but secretly a complete glutton like me it seems to show early. it's worse in subsequent prehnancies but still there in the first. this time everyone thought i was about to drop when i was about 4 months gone. But then i didn't put so much weight on after that so ended up almost normal iyswim.

redbull · 25/09/2006 18:24

hi show of hands, when i was pregnant with ds i more or less showed straight away i was very slim and flat tummy and by 10 weeks was in maternity stuff, you could tell i was pregnant at my 12 week scan all other mums to be wernt showing at all and i looked really big compared to them, if you are that worried i would go and see your GP

liquidclocks · 25/09/2006 18:27

If you're slim anyway then maybe you could tell though it's unusual - a)are you sure your dates are right (I was a month out this time!) b) it may just be your badoy preparing for the coming months by putting on extra water/fat in the relevant area!

liquidclocks · 25/09/2006 18:27

sorry badoy = body!

ShowOfHands · 25/09/2006 18:29

Thanks for the prompt replies! Not completely unheard of then? I keep reading that first pregnancies don't show until very late (therein lies my problem, I will insist on reading things). I didn't expect to be showing when I haven't even had any nausea. It all seems very upside down and back to front.

twins?

redbull · 25/09/2006 18:31

pretty soon the sickness will kick in!!!

ShowOfHands · 25/09/2006 18:31

Oh and my dates are definitely right as I've been charting for a few months. I suppose it could be just water and/or fat but it's very concentrated and bump like if it is. I expected more of a general 'thickening' (hate that description) if anything.

misspollyhadadolly, twins? You're funny, you know that, I mean hilarious, that's a great joke.

some people don't get morning sickeness you know - I never did.

noonar · 25/09/2006 18:35

i'm also slim - size 10-12 and showed early. not sure i looked pg that early, but was defo starting to fill out. was in maternity gear by 3 months.have you seen MW yet? why not go along for your piece of mind?

Kidstrack · 25/09/2006 18:36

i had a bit of a swelling look too at 7 weeks, but my friends was bit bigger than mine and she had twins!

kikidee · 25/09/2006 18:42

Showofhands, I was size 10 (then!), flat tummy and tall and showed very early - certainly 8-9 weeks. I had a little pot belly which got progressively bigger as the day went on. It sounds normal to me. Also, early on you can be quite constipated and that generally shows as a bit of swollen tummy.

ShowOfHands · 25/09/2006 18:47

No not seen a midwife yet, they won't see you here until 8 weeks. I have seen a GP though just to confirm I was pg. I'm not sure of the procedure really, I have an appt to see the midwife on October 5th and don't know if I can ask to see her before then.

Quite like the idea of no nausea, I've had enough of the fatigue...

Hi there.Showed really early with ds 1,was size 8-10 before and God was I huge by the end.My mum nearly fell off her chair when I went to visit her at 3 months(hadnt seen her since before pregnancy) said she wondeed who the dumpy woman getting off the bus to meet her was.(cheeers mum!!!)People also kept asking if I was having twins.Grrr.

Tinasan · 26/09/2006 09:56

Hi Showofhands, I was v.thin, size 8, and showed really quickly too. I had a little pot belly almost straight away, and was in maternity clothes at 11 weeks. I don't think it's that unusual so don't worry about it. I've long legs but am short in the body and my midwife said because of this there's nowhere really for the uterus to go as it starts to expand, so it pops out a lot quicker than on others. Plus if you're pretty slim then your body will try to put down some fat stores in preparation for the baby.

Enjoy your pregnancy!

Bramshott · 26/09/2006 10:21

I have heard that the less you weigh to start with, the more you'll put on - says she clutching at straws having already put on 3/4 stone by 12 weeks...!

merrily · 26/09/2006 10:26

My sister showed very early with her first - she always had a flat, almost concave, stomach. In contrast, I have always had a pot belly, so no one noticed my bump until I was about 4 months!

Congrats on the pregnancy by the way. The anxiety is completely normal and understandable, it is all part and parcel of becoming a mother!

milward · 26/09/2006 10:30

I have always showed early - at 10wks my kids teacher asked if I was preg! I put on loads of weight whilst preg as well - but luckily bf has used it up!

LeBe · 26/09/2006 10:31

Hi showofhands, i have heard alot that if you are slim you show alot earlier than us who have a bit of a tum already, but i showed quite early and i think you are always more aware of it yourself. Everyone thought i was having twins but now at 34 weeks im still quite big but seem to have evened out, i wouldnt worry to much but book an appoint if it will put your mind at rest that is what doctors are there for. Good luck xx

CurrantBun · 26/09/2006 10:59

Just to buck the trend, I seem to be the opposite. I was tiny pre-pregnancy (am 5'1" and a small size 6) and I'm now 18 weeks and still barely showing. Think I'd rather be showing as hospital seem overly focused on my size, which has made me a bit paranoid - even insisted I see the dietician even though I eat like a horse. Fortunately dietician was very happy with the way I eat and also with my fairly modest weight gain (3kg since conception). So while you're worried about showing too early, I'm worried about not showing enough! That's the trouble with pregnancy - there's always something to worry about!

I had a flat, almost concave stomach before I got pregnant and now it's definitely rounded, but unless you know me and know I'm pregnant I don't think you could tell. I'm still wearing all my normal trousers - as I've always gone for very low-waisted styles they seem to be lasting quite well!

maycontainstress · 26/09/2006 11:31

I didn't show at all at 10 weeks with my twins. I didn't 100% agree with the pregnancy test until after I'd heard the heartbeats! After 12 weeks though, I grew like I was being pumped with air by the second.

I'm sure you're fine. Embrace the bump! Maybe it'll slow down/even out? My best friend showed almost immediately too and then it started to settle down. Do you have a booking in appointment date yet? Maybe if you mention the growth rate they'll give you an early (dating scan).

ShowOfHands · 26/09/2006 11:31

Thanks a lot. I knew I could rely on MN for reassurance. I wasn't prepared for how soon or how suddenly it could happen. It almost seemed to be overnight.

CurrantBun, my colleague is 6months pg and still barely showing, you can only tell if you're really looking.

I am so equally confused (started a thread but noone responded!) as i am the same gone as you and bloated and am finding it impossible to breathe in, i have a concave stomach normally and hipbones that jut out much to my mothers disgust and now i am bloated and unable to hide it to those who know me but it can't be the baby as they are only about a milimetre in size by now?? My boobs haven't grown either so bodyshape is pretty grim...

MarsLady · 26/09/2006 16:48

Honey with all of mine I was showing from conception. Sigh..................... Try not to worry.
