I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

mrsb fingers crossed for you!! will be thinking of you :)

noroom ... I think it would be very odd if you didn't feel anxious! You've been through it before, you know what is coming. HG is the worst that many people have felt in their adult lives. A lot of people are hospitalized for days, sometimes often. Some people get PTSD after hyperemesis. Quite a number of people never risk HG again by only ever having one child.

I guess that's putting it dramatically, but honestly it would be very odd if you didn't feel anxious.

The cause of HG is hormonal and physical but part of managing it over the 8/9 months is coping with the mental stress it causes. Please be gentle with yourself. If you don't get it that bad, then you're ahead of the game. But don't be hard on yourself.

freneticfox · 30/09/2014 11:33

Hi all, sorry to those having a really rough ride at the moment hugs.

mrsb how very exciting, keep us updated!

So I'm now at 20+3 and having more good days than bad, which is a relief. 20w scan was all good (boy!!) so I feel a little less anxious, which has helped my overall state of mind.

Something I'm finding is that I am getting a lot of tension headaches - I am normally prone to the odd one but they've been getting SO much more frequent of late, is this normal?

For the Ondansetron 'plug up' I found that Lactulose, Fybogel, Bran flakes, and a LOT of water was my best combo, and even then it wasn't fool proof. I've heard prune juice in smoothies is meant to be good (and easier on the stomach), but after a few tries I found I couldn't stomach the taste.

NoRoomForALittleOne · 30/09/2014 11:43

Oh dear.... What happens when ondansetron doesn't work?

LucindaE · 30/09/2014 12:29

mrsb87 Great news that things seem to be moving - and how awful about the bile runs throughout. I hope we'll get happy news from you soon, though if so, you won't be about to read this.
NoRoom Oh dear you poor thing, there's nothing strange about worrying about the worst weeks to come. I think Meerka and others will know better than me, but if Ondansetron doesn't work alone, they add cyclazine or other anti emetics which make it more effective and B6 sometimes. They can use steroids if all else fails to stabilise you reasonably. How are you feeling this morning, or dare I ask?
Hope everyone is feeling a bit better today. Glad frenetic is so much better.
Back soon.
xx

noRoom after ondan it's steroids. It's the last measure though because apparently there is a slightly more increased risk to the baby. Not big, but a little bit. At that point though it's weighing up the risk to the baby from not enough fluid and nutrition. Risks either way, it's a matter of choosing the least risk.

But as mother Hen says, combining drugs can help, ondan and cyclizine seem to be one of the more usual options. Injecting them can also help sometimes.

frenetic lovely to hear of your little swimmer =) congratulations!

livingzuid · 30/09/2014 13:56

mrsnec what a beauty she is!

mrsb that is so exciting welcome to the end Grin and the beginning of such fun. Being a parent is fab.

NoRoomForALittleOne · 30/09/2014 14:53

I am allergic to cyclizine and metoclopramide. Stemetil not helping and I've tried B6. What are the risks with steroids?

And no, not a good day.

Meerka · 30/09/2014 16:36

I'm not too sure, kali might be able to say. You can only get them prescribed by a consultant though. Consultants vary in their expertise sadly.

It might very well be worth ringing the Pregnancy Sickness Support helpline and leaving a message, they will get back to you. Ask to speak to Dr Tony, he's an elderly doctor experienced in HG and he collaborates sometimes with a well-regarded professor at a uni over HG matters. He will probably be able to recommend an HG-friendly doctor at least and perhaps more.

Which area of the country are you in? The three consultants I know of are in the NE, in East Anglia and in London. Perhaps a private appointment might be possible to arrange, if that is feasible for you.

NoRoomForALittleOne · 30/09/2014 16:46

I'm in the North west, looked after by a hospital that is in 'special measures' partly because of it's obstetric care (or rather lack of). I've read the PSS page on prednisolone and it was very helpful. I've managed to keep something down this afternoon after a sleep. I have a banging head so will check my ketones in a sec. Not loving the fact that I can smell the DC's tea cooking (by DH).

Meerka · 30/09/2014 19:15

in special measure? Oh dear :( Maybe they will try harder though, since they are in special measures ...

only thing I can think of is to ring the preg sickness support and talk it through with them. They always get back to you if you leave your number.

I don't suppose anyone has any suggestions for managing iron issues??? I was told at 16 week midwife appointment that I had low ferritin (but haemoglobin was well in the normal range) so was prescribed ferrous sulphate but she did warn I may not get in with them because of the vomiting and she was right so I only took them for about a week before stopping.mi have attempted to restart a few times but always end up stopping due to nausea/vomiting.

Anyway it doesn't seem to have been a problem till now but over the last few days I've been getting random episodes of dizziness, light headedness, nausea, near fainting and vomiting which Can happen anywhere at any time. can only really attribute it to iron as my Bp has always been fine........the latest episode was this evening on the way home on the tube where I narrowly avoided passing out on the man next to me, and this morning I had to throw up in the middle of the tube station as I thought I was going to pass out.

I've considered spatone but ideally you need to mix that with orange juice but orange juice sets off my reflux and makes me feel sick. So iron makes me feel sick, not taking them seems to make me feel sick, argh! Can't win!

NoRoomForALittleOne · 30/09/2014 20:02

She should never have tried you on ferrous sulphate if you are this sick. Taking the cheap option is so wrong and, frankly, reckless. You do not need to get any more sick. You could try spatone if you can stomach fruit juice. You could try ferrous fumerate or ferrous gluconate. You can also take it every other day if that is more manageable and gets something in.

There is also the expensive option of having iron infusions. You won't need many (maybe 3) and they won't want to do it for you. However, if you cannot tolerate oral iron, you emphatically DO need to get some in another way, especially before giving birth (risks of massive PPH is high if you are anaemic). So it's worth having a fight about if you need to.

NoRoomForALittleOne · 30/09/2014 20:05

Ketones were 2+ earlier so not too worrying but enough to make me feel hideous. I have managed a bit of tea but need to eat/drink some more to clear the ketones. I'm tempted to just go to bed rather than eat, throw up, eat, throw up...

GetTheRedOut · 30/09/2014 20:09

Hi everyone, thanks for all the kind words you've given. I didn't want to post while I was feeling better because there's nothing worse than the happily pregnant people rubbing it in your face.

I was admitted on Friday and discharged Sunday after being rehydrated and working out which meds work (a combination of cyclizine and ondansetron). After coming home, Sunday evening and most of yesterday I felt really great, completely back to normal. I was even dancing around doing the housework yesterday morning. It was amazing to feel like myself again. Then today nausea has hit me like a brick wall, I feel tired, lethargic and sick. The doctor did say I'd need rest, now I'm wondering if cleaning up the house yesterday has set me back or something. I've been taking the meds religiously so it's not that. Gutted to be feeling sick again so soon :(

ToAvoidConversation · 30/09/2014 20:19

Getthered being tired is really not going to help you here. Think long term and rest rest rest.

I've been trying to reduce my drugs this week and its really not worked. I only have three days left of Odansetron left, really hoping the doc prescribes more because my sickness and nausea comes hurtling back without it.

GetTheRedOut · 30/09/2014 20:30

toavoid I've quickly realised I should have been resting rather than cleaning. It just needed doing so badly and I thought the good feeling would be longer term. DP honestly doesn't have time, he works 40 hours and does college part time. The only time he has off is when we have DSD so that's not time for him to do the cleaning. I've been too sick so the place had got pretty bad.

Don't think I'd bother trying to reduce the dose, you should get back to the docs asap to get some more x

ToAvoidConversation · 30/09/2014 20:37

We're getting a cleaner for this place ASAP. If you can afford it go for it, really don't be worrying about that.

I've got a doctors spot on Thursday. Fingers crossed.

basgetti · 30/09/2014 21:06

I thought I'd turned a corner after a couple of non vomiting days, but have spent most of this evening curled up on the bathroom floor. Ketones between 2 and 3 at the moment. I've left a message for the MW cancelling tomorrow's appt which would have involved a half hour walk to the surgery after school with a tired DS in tow, just don't think I could manage it. She had offered me a home visit if needed so I'm taking her up on it!

Mrsnec what a gorgeous picture.

Sorry for those who are still suffering x

Fraggle31 · 30/09/2014 21:07

noroom that's interesting to know that you. I have my week 28 bloods next week and midwife appt the following week so will try every other day till then and chat to midwife about it :)

GetTheRedOut · 30/09/2014 21:20

This is really shot :( roll on May

GetTheRedOut · 30/09/2014 21:24

Also I'm now rather constipated. Think it could be the meds. Do any of you lovely ladies have any suggestions?

freneticfox · 30/09/2014 22:16

Feeling a bit rough tonight, wonder if it's anxiety though... I'm back on full time hours tomorrow after 10 weeks of reduced hours.

Very nervous.

elizabethsmum · 30/09/2014 23:06

Hi all

So sorry that there are a few relapses going on today- all I can say is I know how wretched it feels when you have had a couple of good days to go downhill again- and it does seem to happen very fast.

Have not yet congratulated you mrsnec on your wonderful news- please can someone tell me how to see the baby photo !!(technophobe face)

Good luck for tomorrow frenetic, anxiety won't be helping. Fingers crossed for you xx

Lovely to have you pop back into the thread living xx

Hope today goes well frentic. I'm back full time next week. Sure I'll be exactly the same. Hope you get through it and eventually enjoy it. Come on here and have a moan during the day if you need to rant.

Oklahoma · 01/10/2014 08:37

None of you sound remotely well enough to be going back to work!! Are you SURE this is a good idea?
