I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Hi everyone, sorry to hear others are really suffering.
I checked my ketones last night and there's only a trace so I'm very pleased with that after a day of vomiting. Ice lollies and ice cubes must be working.
Today I've struggled to eat anything but have had 2 ice lollies. Unfortunately have had really loose bowels and I wondered if this had anything to do with the metoclopromide as it has happened about an hour after I've taken it twice now.
Thanks for checking in on me.
I wish I could offer others done useful advice right now but I've nothing useful to say other than I am truly thinking of everyone with HG and hoping everyone gets the help and support they need x

elizabethsmum · 18/10/2014 15:06

wow the thread is so busy at the moment- just briefly it is awful the feeling of guilt with other dc when you can barely look after yourself let alone themSad a few weeks of tv/dvd's will do no harm. also if any friends/neighbours/relatives are able to offer a bit of help then obviously its a bonus/relief.

I resented did not enjoy either of my pregnancies so don't worry about those feelings either- completely normal in the circumstances. also felt like ramming any healthy eating / joyful pregnancy related publications straight into the recycling binWink

cyclizine injections are very painful as intramuscular. however I did have a very bad experience with iv cyclizine as it shouldn't be given if you are very dehydrated iv- felt awful- room spinning, made me sicker than ever- had to grab the bed as I thought I was going to fly off it and had awful hallucination feelings- very scary experience so just a word of warning.

huge hugs to everyone suffering so terribly at the moment. 9 years and 4 years on I have some perspective on the experience now but I will never forget how traumatised hg left me hence continuing to be a regular on the thread xx

Glitterbug21 · 18/10/2014 15:10

Thank you elizabethsmum. I am very scared about going to hospital later but I know it is out of my hands. Sounds really silly from someone who has done it all before. I just hate hospitals and needles.

NO way in hell I am having cyclizine ever again lol

Meerka · 18/10/2014 15:24

About worrying about the baby - the main danger is lack of liquid, not food. If you really havent had anything for days then mention it at the hospital; the baby will take most vitamins and minerals from you, but there are a few that only last a few days in the body and have to be eaten relatively recently.

Even so, the baby looks after itself and will take what it needs to from you. My consultant called it a little parasite. The baby isn't suffering. That's reserved just for you.

Glitterbug21 · 18/10/2014 16:11

MY husbands popped out to get me some Ketostix but says he can't take me to hospital as his work won't allow him to take the shift off.

kittenmamma · 18/10/2014 16:51

Glitter, yep the injection in the bum had meshouting at the doctor! Ouch.
Personally id say phone them yourself, get a cab and take Dd with you. I know it's not ideal but surely as a hospital they will understand.

Ducky5867 · 18/10/2014 16:55

Hi.

I have been watching - but first post here. I am 8 weeks - my 5th pregency but hopefully my 3rd child (2 x mcs). With both my daughters I had terrible sickness - with 1st all the way through and 2nd to 5 months but just sickness not HG.

So when started being ill a few weeks ago I was quite pleased (wasn't sick when I had the miscarriages). However, no feeling really rough - had midwife appointment on Thursday and my Ketones was 3plus so she made appointment for doctors straight away and he has put me on cyclizine tables 3 times a day. It's helping - only been sick twice today (so far) but have completely loose bowel movements since starting tables. Really struggling with work but doc would not sign me off say if not better by Monday then to go back - I just called in sick this morning.

I was not off work for my daughters but can't face work now - guess that's one of the difference with HG. Any advice appreciated

Glitterbug21 · 18/10/2014 17:49

I don't even think my husband even told his work i need to go hospital, he just said to me he cant take it off because they are to busy. No one else will come with me or come and help me.

Ive just cried to everyone begging for help and no one will, im sitting here in tears I've been stuck on the sofa all day only getting up to go to the toilet wich ive only been twice today. I can't care for my daughter and no one is helping. What on earth did I do wrong to people to be abandoned at a time like this. :(

PretzelPrincess · 18/10/2014 17:51

Hi guys. I've been following the thread for the past couple of weeks but first post now.
I'm 7+4 with DC 2 and have had sickness since week 4. Last Friday I was in hospital for rehydration and have been taking cyclizine since then. Today suddenly it seems the cyclizine has stopped working! I had stopped vomiting but still felt nauseous. Bit today the vomiting is back. I feel sooo ill Confused anyone else had this where the tablets stopped working? I didn't have any nausea or sickness with DC1 so this is totally unexpected.

muddylettuce · 18/10/2014 18:13

Oh Glitter no one will look after your daughter this evening? Do you have any friends nearby that might? Did you manage to get the kesostix? I am so sorry. Hugs. X
Ducky I am 8weeks and on cyclizine too and am improving day by day, it builds up in your system gradually so hopefully things will get better for you. I can't believe doctors won't sign you off though. I am asking mine for a sick note next week as I self certified this week. Not only to rest but because the tablets make me really woozy and I am pretty sure work won't want me doing my job under the influence. Hope my doctor is a bit more helpful than yours. I think you should ask again and if any issues call the pregnancy sickness support helpline above. They will help you get what you need. I have no real advice other than the usual just eat little bits of what you fancy (I currently only tolerate popcorn of all things) and drink, ice cubes are good or ice lollies and rest. I have been wallowing with Harry Potter all day as mother had dd.
Pretzel hi, I haven't had my tablets stop working yet, someone will hopefully be along soon to help. Xx

Emsymarie · 18/10/2014 18:18

Oh dear there are so many people suffering at the moment. Pretzel & Ducky one of the others will be along with great advice re meds but if you're still vomiting you might need to adjust your meds/combine.

Glitter I'm so sorry you're in this situation. What time will your partner finish? You really must get some help. I was going to suggest him bringing you some sominex to tide you over the weekend as that's the same as promethazine but I do think you need hospital. Hoping very much he finishes soon and can take you in.

Ducky5867 · 18/10/2014 18:19

Muddy - that's very helpful thank you. Have you told your work that you are pregnant? I haven't told them yet - just self certified for a few days last week - saying sickness but think they assume it's a bug. So didn't want to tell them yet but think I will have too.

muddylettuce · 18/10/2014 18:34

Ducky I have told them, well, my immediate supervisor, as far as I am aware the form hasn't been sent to HR yet. My hand was forced in my last pregnancy as I had time off with sickness quite early. This time I wanted to wait but as sickness came on at week 3 I knew I wouldn't manage to stay at work. I figured they couldn't support me until I told them. So far they have been understanding enough. Can you stipulate none of your co-workers are told, just your management? That's what I did, although suspect the rumour mill is running! X

kittenmamma · 18/10/2014 18:46

Pretzel, I had cyclizine for about two week, it worked the first week then just stopped completely. I went back to the doctor and got metoclopromide which was on and off until I started taking it religiously every 8 hours. I can't yet work out if I just get really bad every second week or if it's because I wasn't taking the medication on time as I'd been told to take it 'when necessary' which is too late.

Ducky5867 · 18/10/2014 18:56

Sounds like a plan Muddy - thanks again. Pleased that yours are being supportive. Mine shouldn't be a surprise to them was was off for 2 weeks in June after last miscarriage. Trouble was they just delayed all my meetings for 2 weeks - so when I went back I had 3 weeks of working 50hrs plus to meet deadlines (I only work 4 days - 30hrs) - so need to make it clear that they can't do that again.

One more question what time of day do you take the Cyclizine? I am on 3 a day - was taking one first thing, lunch time and just before bed. But then feeling sick all evening - and know that as soon as I move i would be ill. I was sick 30 mins after midday pill today so felt pretty rough all afternoon - just been ill again so just taken last tablet for the day now (after being ill)- thinking /hoping that will be better.

Ducky5867 · 18/10/2014 18:59

Feeling so guilty- led in bed as DH baths and reads stories to our 2 DDs Sad

FreckleBee · 18/10/2014 19:39

Glitter if I was you I would go phone the maternity suite or nhs24 ( or whatever the equivelant is in England) and get advice. They'll prob tell you you need to be seen. I know it's not easy to reach out for help to the medical profession at times especially if they haven't been particularly helpful previously but it just might help.

I am really struggling tonight again, I've felt pretty much unable to eat anything today by have nibbled on crackers however as I described earlier and sorry for tmi but it's gone straight through. I'm had a fee salted chips (French fries) at dinner and they came up and I've been violently sick since.
My ketones are between trace and the next one up. When should I be worried? I feel weak, tired, my head is banging.

muddylettuce · 18/10/2014 20:14

Ducky don't feel guilty, my mum has had dd for the last few days while I work my way through the Harry Potter box set rather than catch up on anything remotely constructive! I just struggled through bath and bed feeling like I was going to puke and with really painful ribs (guess there is a bit of stretching going on there). Normally I would leave it to daddy but he's at work, so looking forward to tomorrow when he can do it! I have been taking the cyclizine before every meal (today it was 8, 1130, 1630), the tablets only seem to last a few hours for me and that way I can keep it together during the day. The evenings are mine anyway so I can go to bed or wallow on the sofa so it's not as bad if I feel dreadful. Freckle I hope you feel better soon, I think someone said 3 ketones was dangerous, perhaps someone else knows. You are still dehydrated though more than likely, concentrate on sipping something, I find drinking so much harder then nibbling on food, not sure why, I have never been good at drinking. X

ToAvoidConversation · 18/10/2014 20:20

Ducky I take Cyclizine and odansetrone and it's three a day for both. Works out at 4 hours between each tablet. I take them religiously through the day and night by setting an alarm on my phone.

ToAvoidConversation · 18/10/2014 20:22

Glitter tell your husband that he needs to tell work that he needs to come home. He needs to take responsibility right now. You need looking after right now and work will need to wait. I so wish I could do something!

LucindaE · 18/10/2014 20:51

Welcome to Ducky5867 and PretzelPrincess. Ducky It is a nasty shock to have sickness spiral out of control after welcoming it following suspiciously sickness free pregnancies leading to MC - sympathies. Have you got kestostix, my usual question? I'm surprised the doctor didn't sign ou off.
Pretzel If the cyclazine is no longer working, don't hesitate to go back to the GP and ask for other meds as they can give you other safe ones and even a combination. My usual 'have you got kesostix to test for dehydration' question?
Glitterbug You poor thing, I wish I could do something. I think by the sound of things they are going to have to admit you tommorow, whether OH's work is busy or not. So sorry nobody is willing to help, I don't think people realise how dreadful it is. Sorry to go on and on about the PSS number, but they might be able to find a volunteer in your area who will help, so do give them a ring. KittenMama MuddyLettuce and Frecklebea Not sure who asked the level of ketones you should be concerned about, but KittenMama is right, they do usually think people need admission for IV at 3+ ketones.
I hope DurhamRed is a bit better, and basgetti*OklahomaNoRoom and KeeptheRedOut and Everyone are not suffering too badly.
Waves to Emysmarie . Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

Doctor is keen for me to start lowering dose of promethazine so am going for one instead of 2 before bed, fingers firmly crossed! I know I've asked before but which week did you guys think might be safe to start lowering meds? I'm 19 weeks tomorrow....

elizabethsmum · 18/10/2014 22:43

hi to ducky and pretzel welcome to the thread. virtual moral support and hand holding aplenty here! if meds have stopped working it sounds like something stronger needed- cyclizine is first-line med and pg hormones particularly intense between weeks 7-11 so please go back to gp and ask for something stronger.

emsy how long have you been feeling a bit better/improved for? I started to feel better in second hg preg (also twins) at 16 weeks but as hg had continued through first hg preg throughout (singleton) I did not dare totally come off meds (only oral cyclizine and stemetil by that stage) until 28 weeks. in retrospect am sure i could have done it sooner but I would say at least four weeks of improvement before I would dare do it! (but that is just me!) Xx

FreckleBee · 19/10/2014 05:56

Hello I just wanted to update that things got worse still last night where I was suck several times and felt dizzy, weak, tired etc. phoned the midwives who arranged to get me seen. I thought I'd just end up getting a stemetil injection it they actually admitted me so have been on a drip through the night.
Have managed to sleep but bit feeling that much better yet. Drip ongoing and will try some toast in a little while.
