I'm 34 weeks pregnant now and we have come up with a shortlist of names...I am not completely mad about any of them so would appreciate feedback on what you all think. My dh is Italian so the names we've picked are Italian, to match our surname, but we've tried to pick ones that kind of 'work' over here too...please let me know which ones you like/or alternative suggestions (we know we are having a bambina hence the focus on girls names!)

  • Elena (Helen)
  • Chiara (Clare in Italian - pronounced Kee-ara)
  • Elisabetta (Elizabeth - we'd probably shorten to Elisa or Beth)
  • Luisa (Louisa)

Thanks!

LiliLaTigresse · 18/09/2006 12:17

I looooooove Chiara

leander · 18/09/2006 12:17

I like luisa or Ciara, but they are all very pretty names.

hulababy · 18/09/2006 12:19

I like Luisa best (is it pronouced Louisa or similar?)
Then I like Chiara

gegs73 · 18/09/2006 12:19

Luisa is pretty

SKYTVADICT · 18/09/2006 12:20

I like Elena

cremolafoam · 18/09/2006 12:20

Elena
translates easy to pronounce and read

MrsBadger · 18/09/2006 12:21

Elena and Luisa are my favourites from your list - I have an aversion to names whose pronunciation has to be explained!

I like Clara as an Italian version of Clare too.

MamaG · 18/09/2006 12:21

they are all very pretty names, my best mate is married to an italian man and they wanted italian names - they chose daniela for their DD, but wanted it pronounced Dan-yey-la (hope that make sense) but 6 years down the line, its Dan-yell-a to everyone! I would choose a name that nobody can mis-pronounce if its likely to drive you mad.

Chiara for me, that my dd middle name

Gobbledigook · 18/09/2006 12:24

I like all of them actually but my favourite would be:

Elena

LeBe · 18/09/2006 12:25

Hi Tinasan.

I really like Chiara i think its really pretty and different xx

Gobbledigook · 18/09/2006 12:25

Elena is 'strong' as well as 'pretty' iyswim. And like someone else said - probably not so open to mispronunciation or mispelling

tortoiseshell · 18/09/2006 12:25

I'd go with Elisabetta as it sounds Italian, so the spelling doesn't have to be explained.

lilymolly · 18/09/2006 12:43

elena- as my name is Helen

BonyM · 18/09/2006 12:43

Luisa is lovely, that would be my favourite.

Also like Chiara.

3andnomore · 18/09/2006 12:49

Chiara...just love it
Elena, also very pretty
Luisa sounds cute
Elisabetta...not so keen even though I love the name Elisabeth!

belgo · 18/09/2006 12:52

Elisabetta is beautiful, and i've never heard it before.

JackieNo · 18/09/2006 12:53

I like Elena the best.

Tinasan · 18/09/2006 13:31

Thanks everybody for being so complimentary about our names - some people in RL seem to enjoy telling me that they don't like them and they've made me really self-conscious about choosing! Seems like Elena/Chiara are the faves - I will keep you posted

Those are all beautiful names. Having an unusual and hard to spell first name myself, I can remember being frustrated at the bafflement my name caused in school playgrounds, new teachers etc. So, I would advise going with one of the more 'translatable' names - Elena would be my favourite.

Fimbo · 18/09/2006 13:35

I like Elena. But is it likely to be mixed up with Eleanor depending on various regional accents in the UK? My ds would have been Elinor if he had been a she.

Gem13 · 18/09/2006 13:38

I like Elisabetta - sounds the most Italian.

My favourite Italian name for a girl though is Rafaella. I once taught a lovely teenager called that.

lucy5 · 18/09/2006 13:38

I like Elena
